  1. My sheer guess is that this is largely a marketing-driven decision, and not in a bad way either: Sprint doesn't want another flood of articles from top tech sites like Engadget and Ars complaining about spotty coverage in major markets where LTE isn't fully lit up, much as they experienced two years ago due to Clearwire's uneven.coverage in launch markets. Sprint needs this launch to go well to justify NV to its skittish investors, which means they need a comparable, mostly-solid network to already-launched AT&T and Verizon in these markets before they flip the "reserved" switch. I wouldn't be surprised if they wait to flip markets on until the contractors have already headed to the next market on the list, at least until after the first wave is done. After the launch markets are live for a first month or so and the reviews are all out there, I expect Sprint to be less worried and let sites in lower-tier markets be live from the day they're done.

The funny thing is Sprint launching LTE in a 5x5 channel when the Jesus Phone will be out in October thus becoming an attraction for a lot of new and current customers from other wireless carriers. They better get a lot of capacity than it needs because there will be a big flood of new customers jumping. This will be Sprint last chance to get it right in my opinion, and if they have another PR nightmare regarding their network they will be finished.

  2. Pretty cool article. but in other news

Speaking at the Rural Cellular Association meeting this week in Orlando, Sprint's network VP Bob Azzi stated they've got about 5-6,000 employees in the field working on the upgrades, and that they should have six markets up and running on LTE by the middle of the year.

  3. I think if Apple did that, they would be in breach of the spirit of the contract. Apple has no interest in intentionally trying to sign someone up like that last year only to pigeon hole them into 3G purgatory. That doesn't make any sense for Apple. They aren't pirates. If I was a betting man, I think that the LTE iPhone will be supported for Sprint. Apple is going to have to make separate LTE versions for AT&T and Verizon anyway. They might as well have a third one for Sprint too.I get Sprint leaks all the time. But Apple is not Sprint. Apple does not leak info. Zip. Zero. Nothing. So I would put zero credence in the rumors going around now. There is a saying that, "Only fools, charlatans and liars predict earthquakes." I think the same can be said for those who predict Apple too. Especially this far out.Robert

Maybe some false rumors created by Sprint competitors.

  4. I have the market dates for the First Round. I will be releasing them soon. Just planning how I want to deliver the series. I have a tendency to over plan. But your dates are a little over optimistic. But there will be LTE sites in all those markets (and several more, even some not yet announced by Sprint) that will be live before this device goes on sale.Robert

Any news when NYC might go live in some sites?

  5. I did just announce New Orleans. I was just stating that I would prefer that ABQ was being deployed at the time Nashville is in the schedule. And thus ABQ and NOLA would be announced together. That is, because, I live in the ABQ market. Many believe that the reason Apple snubbed Sprint with an LTE iPad that supports their network is because Sprint's LTE network isn't live. It doesn't seem hard to fathom that Apple wouldn't want their new LTE iPad tarnished on the Now Network, because all those LTE capable units wouldn't be able to use LTE. Apple doesn't seem to be the kind of company that would want devices for future networks. There is a lot of risk to your brand doing that. There are still lots of angry Evo customers. Most likely Apple will allow Sprint to carry an LTE capable version of the new iPad when its LTE network is not only running, but a little more mature. Maybe in the ballpark of active markets that AT&T is now?

Most likely by the end of the Summer the Ipad arrives on Sprint.

I wish I was announcing Albuquerque and New Orleans! :(

Didn't you just announced New Orleans. Regardless Sprint was just snubbed from the Ipad 3 today, and if they don't get the big markets done by the end of September they might have an Iphone LTE problem.

The funny thing is Apple announced that they had to build two separate Ipad for Verizon and AT&T even though they use the same low 700mhz band. From looking at this I think they will do the same thing with the Iphone.

  7. Texas big cities are on schedule for network vision ( Austin Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. Those cities have at leas 85% or more of Texas population. Sprint priority right now is the Urban areas with a high population rate. Maybe in a few years after they are a profitable company they might expand.

I live in NYC which is on schedule for this year, but I wonder why Philadelphia hasn't moved up on the list yet.
