  1. This is from Shentel's recent earnings call:

"As I have discussed before, our wireless customers are twice as likely to churn if they live in a county on the parameter [perimeter] of our network

The reason is that for many of our customers their community of interest is outside of our network. So, they often travel into the Sprint network areas, they don't have the quality of service that Sprint provides in the urban areas."

This is very true where I live which borders Loudoun County - where Sprint signal goes to die. (Clarke, and Frederick are in Shentel's footprint).

  2. There are things I don't get either. Why B26 is just now going to get aggregated. There is no reason the S6-s7 shouldn't have had B26 CA. There's also the crap of not thinking about Aggregating B13 with 25 or 41 in Puerto Rico on the S9.I also don't get in Orlando FL why almost a year later some towers don't have 15x15 while others do. It's just a software update. How hard is that. Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk

I really think masa was holding back on the capital needed to do those upgrades. Marcelo, after the failed merger, repeatedly says something to the effect that sprint is finally able to use full network strength when he's interviewed.
Something must have changed masa's mind during those t mobile negotiations.

  3. Yes, Yes, Yes.   I live in the Original Shentel area along I-81 in Pennsylvania. I have had GREAT service for years due to Shentel having a network that is extremely good.

I agree, live in eastern panhandle of wv now and love shentel's service. My only gripe is that shentel prefers at&t's style where coverage and reliability is near perfect but speeds are low.
When I lived in Pittsburgh I got used to the better speeds.

  4. I don't know how many disappointing miles I have logged a wireless enthusiast.  Probably tens of thousands.  I get your frustration.  And I've experienced them with every carrier at some point or another.  All funny anecdotes now.  Enjoy the view, the greasy roadside food and keep mapping!  #manymilesbeforeisleep

I think I remember you crashing your xc90 trying to find a tower a while back.

  5. This entire thing falls apart when you see that the top ranked carriers are all Sprint and T-Mobile MVNOs despite Sprint getting the lowest ratings. All you have to do to see that BGR loves to fan the flames on the Sprint hate train is search for Sprint on their website. Literally every article where Sprint is mentioned is an attack on them. Searching for T-Mobile shows an article for every single deal they have.

I sincerely believe BGR is written or edited by tmo employees.
I don't click on their articles instead opening pages in the related search on Google.

  6. Really enjoyed this phone....

Great build quality but can't get past the camera. Yes, the camera is improving but I take pictures every day and don't have the patience to be a beta tester.

Essential does have great customer service in my experience. Would be more than willing to try the next Essential phone, if it ever happens.

Is the camera issue software related only? Did you try the Google camera app?
Other than the camera was it worth it as a daily driver?

The service was just launched back in April. So I don’t know when  they will allow BYOD . Is having Wi-Fi calling a big deal to you? And I have tested the hotspot and it works fine on my iPhone.

I read that BYOD would start end of 2017 as well as Wi-Fi calling. I'm thinking I'm going to switch (to avoid being forced onto T-mobile) and try to bring my Sprint phone.

  8. A horizontal merger like this is good for one entity... Shareholders.

Tens of thousands will potentially lose jobs, prices will go up, unlimited will go bye bye (unless you are willing to pay).

Dont forget how powerful the big 2 are in the US government. They will win major concessions in the merger too.

Which is another point, the larger a company becomes the less responsive they are to the consumer because ppl become a statistic rather than valuable. Look at equifax's or Comcast's treatment of customers.

This is correct. In the medical world, I prefer Apple hardware. For example, the software I use to read scans is far better optimized for iOS/OS X than PC/Androids. I've used Windows desktops + laptops with high-res displays and there hasn't been a single one without image scaling problems across the OS. This is important because size + shape is used as a method of diagnosis.

Another example is as simple as looking through MRIs on my phone. If I'm quickly flipping through the scans, Android phones typically can't keep up. There is lag and choppiness. I experience none of this with an iPhone or iPad

Off topic but in all of the hospitals I've worked in - the truly high res diagnostic imaging, like what a radiologist uses, is done on a PC with big monitors in portrait mode. I've never seen a Mac in a reading room...aside from the radiologist's iPhone (which is being used to scroll through ESPN while working...) (that's a joke...sorta)

Lol, am I the only person to pick up this phone?

I'm going to get one, but I was waiting for a display model to play with it first...went to a store last week and the clerk had no idea what an Essential phone was. Funny thing about that though, there was a picture of it on the store's wall - and I turned around and pointed to it.  He said "Oh, yeah that hasn't come in yet"

  11. I got an email saying I was eligible got 50% off on all my lines for a Note 8. I was told it's basically given if Sprint thinks you're a risk for churn, or if you're a long time customer.

I've always wondered about sprint's retention arm. I've been with sprint since 2000 and don't receive any news about credits or deals. Then again, I don't have much to complain about so I rarely call.

  12. I want to try this phone but if I'm gonna go caseless.... I want the matte finish stellar gray, hopefully the company will have that choice available for me. Samsung has disappointed me in color choices

  13. Hmm wonder how that will affect VoLTE. With just calling+ it won't matter, but if Shentel isn't ready for VoLTE when Sprint deploys it, would that mean it'll revert to CDMA for calls if you enter Shentel from Sprint? Or will it fallback to calling+?

Perhaps that's part of the reason why sprint went with calling + as an initial rollout of VoLTE features... So as not to break compatibility with all of sprint's affiliate networks
