I haven't been around in quite a while but what is needed for 5G DSS, is a tower climb necessary?

Nope, SA is simply a push of software update pretty much. It can be turned on at any momemt, but they have no need too. It will provide near 0 improvement, and will be a bigger strain on battery. Honestly wouldn't be surprised if they wait until more spectrum is switched over to 5G and SoC maturation to lessen battery life hits before they enable SA everywhere. The best thing AT&T can do is keep Tmobile from buying any more 2.5Ghz spectrum and get it themselves, alongside any more mid band, and deploy it along side their C band tower climbs. If ATT can even win 20mhz of 2.5Ghz it would be great to deploy along side C band in the 2023/2024 climbs

They don't want to pay for going back and getting those devices "approved" for N77 and software updates.

Thats the thing, even the A32 5Gaready has it enabled, even the S21/Z 3 series has it enabled, yet they make it seem like its only the S22 and on that will support it. Youd think theyd want more devices connecting to N77 to offload LTE some

  3. So am I missing something with why All N77 capable phones arent able to use the new "Andromeda" spectrum? As far As what I could tell is the new ATT spectrum should be available to use as N77, but ATT seems to ensue that N77 phones wont work with it. Is there a specific band thats used for it?

  4. My 3G shut off middle of the day last week. Still no 10mhz N5. They just havent refarmed the 3G spectrum. Figured they would have shut off the 3G network, and very quickly turned on that spectrum for use with 5G. In areas where B2 was used as 3G, it should have been transitioned quickly to 5G, but hasnt here at least.

Im wondering if they will be waiting in some areas until tower climbs happen later this year with the N77 additions.

The 5x5 B30 carrier @ 9840 is used in certain areas to prevent interference with Sirius XM.

Normally I’d think it’s because of that but it’s a single sector, and you will connect to other sites in the same area with full 10x10. It’s odd for sure. And only one 2 sites locally with 10x10 on adjacent sites that will also cover the area

I've noticed around here that AT&T is no longer broadcasting their 5x5 secondary AWS1 carrier here on some sites, instead putting the 10x10 AWS3 carrier in its GCI pattern. I'm noticing it on new sites and recent rip and replace rebuilds so far. Wondering if it's just a cost cutting move or if they are positioning to trade that license or move that carrier to NR only. Most sites are still broadcasting all 3 AWS carriers though.

Does your area have N5 live? I have noticed that some sites have 1/3 sectors with a 5x5mhz b30 , but the other 2 sectors are 10x10. Does Dish have any AWS 3 in your area? Could involve the partnership with Dish potentially.

AT&T has one of these permanently mounted outside of the MN state fair grounds. Seemed really impressive when I was being served off of it. Thousands of people at a music festival and I could muster 60 DL, whereas T-Mobile and Verizon outright didn't work.

What in the heck? Have never seen one of these before! Really  looks cool! Can you post the address to this site, or cross streets? I work at ATT and curious what this looks like through an internal tool for where cell sites are and has information  on them in a basic way

So, AT&T got 80 MHz of C-Band on average, with 40 of that showing up in December. Not a horrible showing, given how much VZW spent.

My area got the C blocks. No C band for me until 2023 or later. Dallas got 40Mhz roughly of the A block which should be ready for use soon. Curious to see the cell sites with C band equipment

I'm out in Lexington, KY today and noticed that Verizon has acquired 5x5 B2 from AT&T, they now have 10x10 at EARFCN 1150, used to be 5x5 at 1125 for Verizon and 5x5 at 1175 for AT&T. Not sure if they just sold for cash or swapped other spectrum. As far as I can tell I don't see any other difference in deployed spectrum here for AT&T, so not sure what spectrum they might have received in return.

Edited to add: Unless they can swap spectrum across different areas. With Verizon buying Bluegrass Cellular maybe they are positioning to trade for the block Bluegrass owns in the middle of AT&Ts 2 B2 carriers south of Louisville. That would keep Lexington at 20x20 and allow the area south of Louisville to go to 20x20 from the current 10x10 + 5x5.

Yeah pretty sure you can do swaps in different markets. Pretty sure that has happened previously with other spectrum swaps. Honestly wish most areas would just complete swaps with the competition to give continuous 10-20mhz swaths instead of separated chunks(Obviously where applicable) pretty sure it would be a better experience for everyone

So it appears the January update on my S20 Ultra has enabled SA 5G for AT&T finally. Before the option wasn't even there. I set my phone to SA only but can't connect yet, but hopefully this is a sign they will enable soon. N5 NSA is all thats live around me currently. This might explain the weirdness some of us have been seeing with the 5G indicator and some other weirdness recently.

    JZzwfP4l.jpg

Yep it was enabled across the board with android 11/One ui 3.0 update. It also enabled N66. I just got the s21 Ultra, and am curious to test if N30 is enabled or if I can enable it

  11. So very interesting find , at my home The 5G upper layer indicator was turned off on certain LTE bands, but still has NR connected. It was on a Band 30 5 mhz one tower, a Band 30 10mhz chunk on another, and my home tower the Band 2 5Mhz chunk now has no indicator on. I am wondering if they are maybe configuring the the tower for DSS NR band 2

  12. Quick look, looks like it was a 20mhz connection on N2, that's not too bad. Wonder if it's DSS or all n2 being converted from LTE. Also noticed B1w being the Primary carrier with N2, that's interesting. From what I've seen in my locale is B2 is the primary LTE carrier with N5 being the NR band of choice.

VZW is running DSS on NSA, so it's definitely possible. I've seen reports that AT&T is running DSS on n2 at the very least.

On my mom's unlocked S20 n5 is the only NR band visible when running in AT&T mode.

Where she lives, it appears as though AT&T has turned off B5 LTE entirely, running a dedicated 5 MHz for NR (speculated), plus 5 MHz for H+ (confirmed). My guess is that they have enough subscribers that can't do VoLTE that moving H+ to PCS here would be a disaster coverage-wise, and there's no point running DSS on a 5 MHz channel when they have, from what I can tell, 15x15 of PCS, 15x15 + 10x10 of AWS, 10x10 B30, 5x5 B12 + 5 MHz B29, and of course 10x10 of B14 to play with.

By contrast, the brother that just got a Moto g fast is in an area where AT&T is still running B5 LTE, as well as H+ on 850. No n5 at all. Betting that's because that cell site hasn't been touched in awhile (no AWS, no B30, no B14 AFAIK), so there's no NR to turn on and not enough low-band capacity if you dropped B5 LTE. But VoLTE works fine on the new phone, just not sure whether his suddenly better reception is due to using B12 or whether the radio in the g fast is just that good compared to the OG pixel while still using B5.

Yep any phone not on Android 11 will be stuck on N5 selectively.  They will enable more bands in the coming months. N2 would be impossible to connect to on phones currently unless they ran a specific dialer code and enabled them. But even then it may not connect to them. I've changed the CSCs to other carriers on my U1 version and 5G will not ever show up. Something in the ATT csc is allowing the NR to connect.

I still can't go off of hearing about n2 or n66 being live until a screenshot of the engineering screen is posted unfortunately. I am sure in someplace it could be on. DSS is live in a very few select places , specifically know in North Texas it was being tested

  14. Unfortunately no phones have those nr bands turned on. The only way to have those enabled is thru the android 11 Beta, or doing some trickery in a menu. I haven't seen full iPhone specs on NR yet, or to even know what's enabled. But DSS is disabled on all phones unless you manually turn it on deep into a special menu. N5 is the main NR band across the US, and DSS was being tested in a very small part of North Texas that's not been named yet. Now not to say it's not on but I've not seen a valid report of anything other than N5 proved on phones. I would love to see it, and to see DSS on. Now if anyone has seen it I am very curious about what it will show on phones if it'll be anything different or something will show up.

Also the note 20 has support for N2, N5, N12, and N66 for ATT N71/N41 is obviously supported but no enabled on ATT software. Let's hope DSS is live nationwide soon .

And if you still see B5 still on LTE chances are you will not have 5G live until DSS is up and running, or SA is implemented

  15. Haven't seen any 10x10 n5 yet anywhere. Id have to see pictures to believe it. I work for ATT, and my store is getting a brand new small cell and should have 5G. Our city of over 100k has had 5G since April unofficially,  and August officially. I have done some stuff on my note 20 ultra to enable DSS, all phones its disabled to my knowledge. With the android 11 beta they enabled SA 5G on the U1 ATT software. Also saw N2, and N66 enabled. N12 should follow suit next.

SA will be when DSS is enabled my guess. Not sure if DSS can work in NSA mode.

By the way if yall need anything let me know I can try my best to answer questions,  and site questions (Have internal access to site maps,  and what's deployed on sites to a general degree)

A new SignalCheck beta has been pushed out and should be available shortly! It is focused on 5G improvements.. I still don't expect to see actual signal data yet, but there is now a possibility of seeing more information than previously. I have added several new status indicators; these descriptions are taken directly from some hidden Android routines:

    • Restricted: "camped on an LTE cell that supports E-UTRA-NR Dual Connectivity (EN-DC) but either the use of dual connectivity with NR (DCNR) is restricted or NR is not supported by the selected PLMN"
    • Not Restricted: "camped on an LTE cell that supports E-UTRA-NR Dual Connectivity (EN-DC) and both the use of dual connectivity with NR (DCNR) is not restricted and NR is supported by the selected PLMN"
    • Connected: "camped on an LTE cell that supports E-UTRA-NR Dual Connectivity (EN-DC) and also connected to at least one 5G cell as a secondary serving cell"

My educated guess is that many devices are showing the "5G" icon when any of these statuses are present, not just "Connected" -- hopefully this will help confirm that.

Configurable alerts for when an actual 5G connection is detected or lost have been also been added. These are similar to the LTE and SMR800 alerts already in the app. One difference is the "5G Found" status bar icon is a "5G" graphic so it should be clear when you connect. It is an "Alert" so it will only appear once, when the connection is made (if it's dropped and reconnected, you will be alerted again). That also means that it is not a true 5G "indicator" like the regular status bar icon because if you do not swipe away the alert notification, it will stay there forever (or if you do swipe it away, that doesn't necessarily mean you are no longer on 5G).

You can also continue to use the "LTE Custom Alert" to make your own 5G alerts for now, because any 5G information still displays in the app as text under in LTE section for.

I do not have a 5G device (or coverage), so I am relying on feedback from those of you who do. Let me know.. thanks!

From my understanding the 5G symbol displays on phones due to an Upperlayer packet being sent to tell the phone to display 5G , even without 5G being present. It is why you can see 5G NR band 5 on ATT, and not see a 5G symbol as the indicator. If you would like I work for ATT, and ny work shows a 5G indicator,  but has no NR, and Just up the street a few miles I get an LTR indicator, but have NR band 5 showing. Maybe it can help you out

There was a point in time where the thinking was that Apple was offering some way to get at the data without jailbreak.  I'm not sure where it ended up but it was some core something API.  Maybe it was just a witch hunt, but the data that CellularInfo provided is displayed already if the user goes to Field Test.  Really wild that information is not exposed anywhere without jailbreak - its available now - just have to use field test to get it.

Yeah Just dialing the *3001#12345#* is a pain. Having the widgets on the screen would be easier for sure

  18. I was able to recompile it using the Code given, but nothing happens on the IOS 11.2.1. Just a black screen. Not sure what I can do with little code history, But I am trying to play around with it. If anyone wants to help I do not mind trying to contribute to this application. And would share the project once it’s working for others to side load
