  1. Traveled from Eugene to Waldport over the weekend, and stayed in Yachats. A little disappointed in coverage, as it seems to have remained stagnant if not slightly degraded over the last year... My mom lives in Waldport, and I could've sworn when I switched back to Sprint last year, the LTE in Waldport was solid. This time, I jumped between LTE\3G, and at times even when I had LTE, I didn't actually have data. My mom also noted that in the last couple of months, something has changed because her phone connection has just not been as good. Figured it was her G3, but my S7 Edge had the same issues. Also surprised by the Yachats coverage. In downtown Yachats, it's only roaming (in fairness to Sprint, their coverage maps actually accurately represent this!) - and while staying at the Adobe, I jumped between LTE\3G, but again, at times I had LTE with 11mbps, and other times I had LTE but data didn't actually work. Uplink issues along the coast maybe? Also, anyone know why Sprint is still stuck at 3G in Florence? I noticed Tmobile hasn't been able to add any LTE there either, so I'm assuming there's a reason.
  2. Sorry if this is a little off topic, but this seems like the place people would know - I know nothing about the LA area but have a question for folks in that area that are monitoring the network and upgrades. I recently switched back to Sprint and my brother who lives in LA (I'm in Oregon) is reporting essentially unusable speeds in two zip codes he frequents - 90094 and 90026 using an LG G3. Maybe that doesn't narrow it down enough, but if it does, do those areas currently have a lot of work going on? I asked him to download Speedtest.net just out of curiosity and it reported it would take 40min(!) to download. He's coming from having Verizon for the last 9 months, so I wouldn't expect identical coverage, but I would hope for generally usable web browsing speeds...

I concur - with my M7 I would just slap a charging cable in without a second thought. With the G3 (both my first and my exchanged unit) I have to put a tiny bit of thought into plugging it in. On the upside, it seems like it's a slightly tighter port than the M7. Despite my best efforts, some of that sounded...wrong. I don't think there's a way to discuss charging ports without it sounding a little unusual.

In case anyone is wondering, I exchanged my G3 in case it was a compass issue with just my phone, and the replacement does the same thing. The ATT and Verizon versions I played with didn't have the same problem (hence why I tried the exchange). Maybe it's related to the newer version of software our version has or something.

Yeah, I can't even say for sure how old this one is. Definitely sucks when you lose data....glad mine came to life long enough to copy data off it. Also glad that it appears it was an MicroSD card problem and not a G3 problem. Love this phone so far - hardly miss my M7 boomsound speakers. Do miss root though...waiting...waiting...

I've not had any charging port issues, and I use mine a lot while it's plugged in. Granted, it's only been a couple of days. Did just have a funky MicroSD card issue though. Put a card in yesterday (32gb, formatted fat32) with a bunch of stuff on it, and over the course of the day used it a couple of times (saved pictures to it, ran some games off it, etc). Everything appeared normal. Woke up in the middle of the night, checked the time, and all of a sudden got the disconnected MicroSD warning. Reinserted it, it recognized it once, then another disconnected error. Reinserted it, and now it doesn't recognize that particular card at all. Tried a couple of others (16gb, and a 512mb), and it recognized both immediately and properly (512mb formatted both fat and fat32, 16gb some mysterious format that I didn't check but the phone knew it was weird and wanted to format it because it couldn't read it, which was the expected result). The 32gb still works fine in my tablet, and the data the phone wrote to it is accessible through that. The phone just refuses to acknowledge it's existence anymore. I didn't have time to copy the data off it and reformat it and try again. Might do that today if I get a chance. I have a 64gb coming tomorrow I'll format in the phone. Hopefully the 32gb being unreadable only by the phone is just a fluke. UPDATE: When I went to copy the files from the problematic MicroSD card to my PC, it couldn't read it until I restarted my PC. Sure that could be a fluke too, but I'm chalking this up to an aging and seemingly unreliable 32gb MicroSD card.

So it sounds like it's really not all that uncommon. Next time I'm in an empty parking lot I'm going to drive around in a circle a few times so it'll look like I'm circle strafing (yes, at times I am easily amused).

Yeah I haven't had a ton of time to check it out yet (just got the phone yesterday), so I'll toy around with it some more. Funky compass isn't a deal breaker for me anyway and so far I love the phone - I was mostly just curious what other peoples experiences were with their G3's compass.

So far it seems to do okay following me when I move, it just points in the wrong direction. Going to test it again when driving in just a bit after calibrating. Compass isn't a huge deal for me - I passed on the M8 because I hated my M7's camera, and I passed on the S5 because 16GB of ram is silly in 2014. A buggy compass I can live with as long as GPS works. It'd just be nice to know if it was a wide spread issue (so hopefully a fix can be released) or if I should look at exchanging.

Haha yeah thank goodness I sit in an office in a quiet part of the building. No one walked by........though there is a window and it's near where people enter\leave the building........hope no one decided to glance over as they were coming in.

New G3 owner, noticed this reported in a few other forums and having the same problem - looking to see if it's a pretty common issue or just the usual vocal minority speaking up. The compass is bad. Very bad. In Google Maps, I can sit in my office and slowly spin around, and the direction I'm "facing" is either 90 or 180 degrees off the entire time. Downloading a Compass app shows the same thing. I tried a two calibration methods (figure 8 and the three spins methods) and it doesn't seem to get any better.
  12. I think you're tying two different situations into one. This part... Customers can be assigned to a new Framily group or join a Framily group on the customer’s existing account that has not reached the 10 line maximum. The line cannot join with groups outside of the customer’s existing account....is in a section referencing existing Sprint customers. Existing customers can get a new Framily ID, or join a Framily ID that's already on their account (for example, you have three individual lines on your account and want them on the same Framily plan, or for converting a family plan to a Framily plan). The second part is referencing how to add someone to a Framily. Note it just says "individuals", not "customers", because the idea is that those folks will be new Sprint customers, as the previously mentioned section already notes existing customers can't join a Framily plan outside of their account. However, as has been noted here and on Slickdeals, some existing customers have successfully joined a framily outside of their account. Whether this is due to a lack of training, Sprint being somewhat lenient with the "no existing customers joining outside plans", or just luck, who knows. Like most things in life, there seems to be a gray area you can talk yourself into. Edit: To answer your question, officially, if you're on separate accounts, that should be a no. The only true way to do it by the official terms of the Framily plan is to do a transfer of liability (TOL) where either you or her takes ownership of all nine lines and converts it to a Framily. However, changing every line to the same billing address (while maintaining separate liability) and asking through Sprint Chat Support may be successful as well, though this is outside the scope of the T&C.
  13. The math is fine, I just included two examples in my original message (Framily with 5 versus Framily with 7). It was part of the point I was making about Framily - those with more lines are more impacted by this because a 5 versus 7 Framily is a $50 difference, so there's a bit of footwork on the customers part now if we want to ensure our bill doesn't jump up $50 but only want to maintain our existing five lines (and find others to get the cost down to something similar to the existing ED1500.
  14. Unlimited data may be unsustainable, but if this is really a monster of a problem, this is a monster Sprint created by pushing unlimited so hard for the last few years. If they're just now realizing their mistake and trying to reign in the data use a little bit, that's fine. But let's not pretend that the importance of unlimited data is the consumers fault - Sprint has been telling us or years it's what we want and that it's way better than metered data.
  15. Framily is a great deal for some Sprint users, like a single line user who can join a larger Framily, as one or two people dropping is only a $5 or $10 swing. And if you're on an ED1500 plan but four out of five lines only use 1gb data, you can save some money shifting your data limits - but Framily isn't the best deal for EVERY existing Sprint user. I think that's why you're hearing some folks that understand but aren't thrilled by the new offer. Whether Framily is supposed to "not include subsidy pricing" or not, Framily is not as good a deal as Everything Data 1500 family plan with five lines if you don't need more than 1500 minutes. Five Framily lines with unlimited data = $275\month ED1500 with five smartphones = $240 Even if you maximize the Framily discount, it's still $225 for five unlimited data lines, meaning yes you save $15 but you also realize you're giving up subsidies, so even upgrading ONE of your five lines, and you're probably back over that $240 you're paying with ED1500 (yes I realize discounted upgrades are likely going away, so that'll sting regardless). And that's not including that if a couple of your additional Framily members drop, your monthly cost goes up (and for those of us with five lines, two people dropping could be a $50 swing). So those of us with four or five lines on a family plan right now aren't foolish for considering staying on these plans that supposedly include subsidization costs - it's likely less expensive, particularly if we don't want to hassle with finding more "framily" members or worrying about our bill going up because our friends decide to switch services. I think that's probably why it came across as condescending.
  16. I think the bigger shift will have to be on Best Buy's part and how cell phone sales work into their overall business plan. I imagine if retailers are buying phones for $350 - $375, they won't be able to mark them up $200 just because that's the profit they were earning previously. Once contract incentives go away, unsubsidized cell phones will sell like any other high dollar product - prices based on supply, demand, and the lowest they can sell it for while still earning a business sustaining profit. Best Buy won't be able to sell a phone for $550 just to make $200 profit if Amazon and Wal-Mart are selling the same phone for $450. Edit to add: This is, of course, not counting the supposed "Apple tax" or that the $200 estimates for how much the iPhone 5S costs to make doesn't really account for research and development - all dollar amounts are just examples!
  17. That'd be nice...in the short term though, if they do away with subsidies when the average user (or heck, me) are ready for a new phone, what happens? Sprint says the only option is to EasyPay for $25\month x24 months, and they're best suggestion is "Well, save some money by switching to Framily!.....and convincing three people you know to join Sprint..."? You'll have a lot of confused customers coming to the end of the contract and hearing about Verzon's coverage, or ATT's speed, or T-Mobiles....Tmobiling, while feeling like Sprint is giving them the short end of the stick.
  18. Sucks if that's true. Framily is a terrible deal for some of us. Current: 5 lines, unlimited data, $220\month, two year discounted upgrades Framily 5 lines: Tiered data based on use (not a big deal to me): $215\month, no phone discounts Framily 5 lines, and if I talk two more people into joining Sprint: $165, no phone discounts. If you assume monthly EasyPay payments of about $20 per phone, even if I only ugprade three lines, with the maximum Framily savings, it'd still be $225 for my five lines. Edit: And this assuming I want to spend time and effort "selling" Sprint to a couple of people. I sold cell service for years, I know how to do it, but seriously - I don't want to feel like I have to for maximum savings. I'm sure Framily is a great deal for a lot of people. I'm sure it's also an awful deal for a lot of people. If they really do away with subsidies this year - once we're talking $250 - $300\month for a few phone upgrades, all of a sudden AT&T (with their recently discounted Next plans) for coverage or Tmo for value start sounding a lot better...
  19. I know this is not a direct comparison, but it reminds me of Solavei. In order to maximize my savings, I have to sell the product to other people. This doesn't create brand loyalty - it creates a lot of average joe's talking up Sprint to their friends to save themselves $5 a month. Some of these folks may switch, but they may also wind up hating Sprint and leave. Now all Sprint has done is given itself one more person who thinks "Ugh, I had Sprint for three months and hated it". If Sprint really wants to add subscribers, make your existing users so happy they encourage their friends to join Sprint because they love the product, not because it's the only way to save on our monthly bills. I'm unhappy with my Sprint service at the moment because the LTE roll out in town has slowed to a crawl (or stopped), but overall I appreciate Sprint because it usually seems like they care about customer service, the product is generally good, and even though I've had some small bouts with customer service, they generally do the right thing...but moves like this just leave a bad taste in my mouth.
  20. I know this was briefly covered a few times before, but it really seems like Sprint is dropping the ball by not allowing existing subs to join the same "family". I get that thanks to the internet, nearly EVERYONE would be in a 7+ person "framily", but if Sprint wants to push the great "savings" with Framily (while moving people away from subsidized plans), they've got to be more flexible with this. Sprint's LTE upgrades in my area have basically been on pause for 6+ months, and I've thought about switching carriers. Upon hearing about Framily and figuring out the savings, I thought about switching my five lines, getting one friend thinking about switching to Sprint to join, then having another couple friends who have Sprint but are considering leaving all to join a Framily together. Even if we aren't thrilled with the current service, the promise of upgrades and savings with Framily are worth it. But wait, my two other friends can't join my Framily, meaning it'd be six people until I find a seventh. And what if the 6th person dislikes the lack of timely LTE upgrades and the fact he's paying $5\month more than intended, and leaves after a few months? It's a $25\$50 swing. Then I leave because I can't maximize my savings, and it seems cruel to sell Sprint to non-Sprint users in an area where their upgrades have slowed significantly. All of a sudden Sprint goes from 7 existing user and one new sub, to no new sub, and losing seven lines. Obviously this is a case by case situation, but I want to like Sprint and I'm frustrated that every time it seems like Sprint does something good, they do something to make it far less good.
  21. I apologize if this is a horribly stupid question that's already been asked\answered (I searched, I promise!) - but how does this work when converting a family plan for line management? For example, I have five lines currently. If I go into a Sprint store and ask to move all those to a new Framily plan, would I just see five separate lines under my online account, and manage them all separately (which obviously in this case, means adding them to the same Framily group)? And just to make sure I understand the whole idea here, this is essentially a BYOD if you want, correct? If I have a couple of lines with old, out of contract phones, they'll just switch over using their existing phones, and either be eligible for an upgrade through Sprint (with optional Easy Pay) or I can buy some used (clean ESN) phones and activate on their Framily lines, right?
  22. Neither Sprint or Apple have made any clear statements as to what happened. It was definitely a 7.0.2 update problem, as every single reported case of this specific issue occurred with 7.0.2. The only reliable fix seems to be getting a phone with 7.0.1 or earlier and going straight to 7.0.3 (or now 7.0.4). Managing to bypass 7.0.2 always seems to solve the problem. From my understanding, the iPhone5 for Sprint and Verizon are basically the same phone, and when the phone is first booted is when it's decided whether it's a Verizon or Sprint phone (maybe done during manufacturing?). My best guess is that the 7.0.2 update somehow screwed up that setting on SOME iPhone5's, causing a Sprint phone to look for Verizon networks or something crazy like that. A few comments noted that the phones could probably be fixed by sending them back to Apple as they're the only ones that can reset that particular setting, but obviously it's a whole lot easier to just swap it out for a working phone that doesn't touch 7.0.2.
  23. Okay I tried both of these things. No luck unfortunately.
  24. Thanks for the tips guys. I will give both of these a try. I feel like I've already tried both of these things, but who knows at this point!
  25. Yeah, that's what's frustrating - one phone with iOS7 works perfectly. The other doesn't. Sadly, according to this thread https://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/134621?start=0&tstart=0 this isn't the only instance of it happening, but neither Apple or Sprint are really saying anything yet. Probably not enough reported issues I suppose. Also, since it's an iPhone5, I suspect Apple may replace it with a refurb too, wouldn't they? I had never heard that all replacements they do are "new"...
