  1. ATTENTION S4GRU MEMBERS! WE HAVE A LIVE ONE...err, two!

I was going through my latest list of live NV sites, and I came across two sites labeled with CDMA 800. All the NV completed sites to date have been labeled CDMA 1900 or LTE 1900. Does this mean that the 1xAdvanced carrier is active on Channel 476 on these two sites? It looks like it!

If you are in the Chicago area, have a 800 SMR capable device and have the skills to install our 800 CDMA PRL, then please drive out to the Rochelle/De Kalb area and try to connect to these 800MHz CDMA sites on Channel 476. This is some crazy exciting stuff for the wireless nerd!

If you are going to give it a try, let me know before you head out there. The suspense is killing me. See the map of the site locations in question below.

  2. Hi Robert,

Thanks for the info. Clearing the Nextel spectrum makes sense why the 800MHz RRH was powered off. This means the LTE RRH was powered on, but I had no was to test whether it was radiating.

The site was: 25 Brigham St, Westborough, MA 01581.

How many towers are on this site? Holy moly!!!

Here is the info I have on this site:

  3. I too share some frustration that devices this year do not support 800 LTE. But I have gotten over it now. I think my biggest concern about not having 800 LTE was capacity issues. I don't want to have a device that is stuck on the sole 1900 LTE carrier that is full, when a completely unburdened 800 LTE carrier goes live that I won't be able to access. But now that I know that Sprint has plans for more 1900 LTE carriers, that doesn't seem like such a big deal anymore.

  4. Sprint recently upgraded one of its towers in the center of Westborough, MA. I went and took some pictures which I uploaded to my website, www.danlampie.com, along with a quick article about Network Vision. I don't have any performance information but it does apear that Sprint is going with narrower beam antennas...probally 65 degrees. This should help increase the SNR, at the expense of reduced coverage in the nulls where the antenna patterns overlap. This is an Alcatel-Lucent market and they installed three RRH per sector, so I was thinking two RRH for PCS and one RRH for 800MHz. It appeared the only two (the PCS band) of the three RRH were powered on, so I am thinking that 800Mhz 1X advanced carriers would be coming a little bit later down the road. The old coax was cut, but the old antennas were still mounted. I wonder why the old antennas were not removed when they were already doing work on the tower.

Thanks for the thread. I actually came across your website and read your posting earlier in the week.

Sprint has a combined 800/1900 panel in Network Vision. They are not separate anymore. The large one in the middle of each sector is the new NV panel. It is connected to the RRU. The smaller ones out at the ends are likely legacy panels. They will be removed later. Typically 30 to 45 days after all the work on the site is complete.

At most sites, 800 CDMA will go live on Channel 476 later in the year, but not at initial NV deployment. They are still clearing iDEN out of the way to free up Channel 476 for the new 1xA carriers being installed in NV.

Respond with the exact location of this site, either GPS coords or nearest cross streets and I will tell you some more schedule info on this site. And welcome to S4GRU!

  5. I agree with 4ringsnbr,

While LTE in the 800 band sounds great. Why not deploy EVDO in that band for a year or two since you have millions of phones that can use it now? Instead they are going to go straight to LTE in the 800 band which no device on thier network can even use.

Seems like it would be a great step, (even if not long term), to free up spectrum for markets that are so congested that they are almost unusable.

Not sure which is worse AT&T and Verizon squating on bands and not using them. Or sprint rolling out services on bands that no one can use.

Because Sprint can't start deploying EVDO carriers on 800 until Fall (just like 1xA). So they would be spending a lot of money to deploy something for less than one years use. Because in less than 12 months they will need to vacate those carriers for LTE800 in that spectrum. A lot of wasted money for carriers that are going to be in use for less than 12 months. Sprint doesn't have the luxury for additional expenses.

Also, they would have to vacate more iDEN channels than they are planning now. Sprint is only vacating enough room for Channel 476 in the iDEN thinning. And that is going for the 1xA carrier.

These devices only have EVDO 800 capability, because they are coming naturally with it. Why block it? Also, in the future, Sprint will have some weird little pieces of 800 spectrum left over in some markets with irregular sized spectrum holdings. They may be able to take a EVDO carrier that can be used for these devices in those instances.

  6.

I actually don't mind that Sprint would have to sell off part of the EBS/BRS spectrum holdings. Sprint doesn't need 150 MHz of 2.5 GHz spectrum. Sprint could sell off 50 MHz of 2.5 GHz and could use the funding to purchase more favorable spectrum.

I think 100 GHz of 2.5 GHz would be plenty enough. Sprint shouldn't want the full 150 MHz of 2.5 GHz spectrum anyways due to the fact that it would preclude them form future spectrum auctions.

Clearwire does not have 150MHz nationwide. Their EBS spectrum is highly variable. Some markets they have as little as 60-70MHz. I would say it's more like 100MHz on average. The most they have in any market is 140MHz. And that's only in a couple of markets.

That would just barely fit comfortably in my pocket. And i wear cargo pants with big pockets.

Are you petite? I can fit my 7" tablet in my cargo pant pockets. I can fit the Note in most of my pants pockets. I never wear skinny jeans.

  8. I wonder if Clearwire ever intends to max out their spectrum holdings for LTE-Advanced. They have ~140MHz per market' date=' maybe do a full blown 20+20+20+20+20 config(since LTE-A Rev.10 only supports up to 100MHz).

    Imagine the speeds... :D[/quote']

80-140MHz per market. Their EBS holdings are highly variable. BRS is much more consistent.

  9. Sorry I'm confused. I thought the circles in yellow on all the upcoming markets' date=' like mine in Tampa, are the sites that will be active once nv is complete. Tampa's for example, are the yellow circles ones that will be live once nv is complete, or some of the sites will come online with the rest later?[/quote']

Yes. The maps in the market articles are showing all sites. That is correct.

  10. I figure 95% of my smartphone usage is for data/texting, not voice. And half of my voice usage is hands free or speaker phone. So my device would better serve me with a bigger screen than a small form factor for yakking. That's what I figure anyway.

  11. Your faith in Network Vision's potential cromulescence embiggens my spirit and enobles us all! ;)

Are you sure you are in NM?

I'm heading to the ABQ car show.

  12. Thanks for your quick reply. I'm talking about the coverage maps on your site here.. specifically the Atlanta one, but you do have many: http://s4gru.com/ind...-atlantaathens/

Where I live there is no 4G (Wimax), but there is very close. This map looks as if I will have 4GLTE where I live. Just wanted to confirm if this coverage is what it will be this June, or after ALL NV is done.

    Thanks again!

The coverage shown in the referenced Atlanta map is live now. And we will be adding more sites to this map in the next week with even more coverage.

  13. I'm curious: Why make a device compatible with 3G EVDO on 800 SMR when you have no plans to put EVDO on the SMR Band to begin with?

They didn't go through any extraordinary measures to "make it." Given all the other requirements of the device that were necessary, it just is. And it's not a bad thing. It will give Sprint flexibility in the future.

There are many places geographically where Sprint will not have enough SMR spectrum to deploy a 5x5 LTE carrier. They could elect in those locations to at least install an EVDO carrier for customers to use. However, I have never seen one document that says Sprint plans to do this. But it is something they could do.

    Robert

  14. Basic question. The coverage maps, are they the final coverage when all of NV is complete (800MHz) or will that be the coverage for LTE when the first phase at 1900Mhz rolls out (For example, June in the first markets)?

I'm not clear which coverage maps you are referring to. Sprint will likely only show coverage that is live on their coverage maps, not future coverages. But Sprint is not posting any LTE coverage maps at the moment.

Here at S4GRU, we currently are only showing one LTE coverage map. And that's in Atlanta. And it only shows live LTE coverage on the map. We may consider in the future doing future coverage maps for interest. However, we have our hands pretty full just creating live coverage maps at the moment.

We will post static images of our coverage maps in public areas, however the interactive coverage maps are in our Premier Sponsor area at the moment.

  15. They really are working toward that goal? That is even better news than the ants that invaded the kitchen tonight because of the rain, rain, and more rain.

    :)

The ants go marching one by one, Hurrah! Hurrah!

  16. So giving this app a try, I notice a lot of failed connections.

Is it just not good with crappy networks? Speedtest shows me my horrible sub 100 speeds fine in the same area, but seems rootmetrics just fails and wont post a speed until it hits 100+.

Just asking as I go back to painting my town red/black.

I do also get a lot of failures on RootMetrics in sub 100kbps speeds. It seems to be related to ping when that happens. It seems to me when I go over to SpeedTest app when that happens, the ping is over a second. In those instances where ping is normal, but speed is not, it seems the RootMetrics app is able to cope. That's my observation.
