Shentel / Sprint LTE - (was ntelos - West & N&W Virginia)

Sent a tweet to Sprint today regarding the Ntelos towers here in Martinsville switching from EV-DO to eHRPD with no data and the reps told me they were recently upgraded with LTE but it has not been turned on yet (see tweets below).  I wonder if this is true because Sprint has always told me they couldn't see any of the Ntelos tower info like they could their own.

They are appearing on the Sprint Network Enhancements and Upgrades site: https://network.sprint.com/search/Martinsburg,%20wv/ and also for some other parts of Ntelos territory. Happy Hunting!!

P.S.: Other members are stating that is Shentel territory. Both seem to claim it: http://s4gru.com/index.php?s=6b6007e334f3a276d579a12834e0eed0&app=forums&module=post&section=post&do=edit_post&f=30&t=4742&p=278475&st=1860&_from=quickedit  If you can not tell by signal, then a site visit might be needed.

nTelos does sell cellular service in Martinsburg but it is not a Sprint affiliate for that area.  Shentel handles the Sprint Service in Martinsburg and nTelos is actually a competitor to Shentel/Sprint in Martinsburg.

That's why I gave Sprint my zip in the above tweets because I had a feeling they would confuse Martinsville VA with Martinsburg, WV

I always figured you guys would know the area best. What is interesting to me is that Sprint is including affiliate upgrade info on their network improvements page.

im in roanoke va i gotta be honest not happy with sprint right now, i found out that there no upgrades coming to roanoke va, becuase sprint is leasing the towers from ntelos, and i have to be honest, if I wanted ntelos i would of signed up with them, but i chose sprint

i love sprint it just why is sprint leasing towers from ntelos in roanoke va

this great person told me on fb that NTelos is a partner of Sprint. NTelos was avoiding the LTE build up until one of their biggest stockholders (Shentel) was about to build Sprint's network if a new agreement was not reached soon. Now Ntelos has play catch-up in their Sprint-approved LTE deployment for every

the reason i like sprint, is becuase of the advantages they have, but I wish i could take advantage of it somewhere besides when i go out of the state

NTelos building out LTE because they are afraid of losing Sprint is useless if they aren't going to let Sprint customers access it. NTelos LTE is live in a couple of markets right now (beckley and Jonesboro) and they refuse to let Sprint customers use it. As far as I'm concerned nTelos needs to die a quick and sudden death.

so ntelos is the ones that preventing them from expanding here or building there network?, but if so why does sprint just build there own towers here or something like that?

I would say Sprint is a little busy upgrading their entire network so once they finish (or get close to finishing) that's probably when they would consider building out into new territory.

I am handicaped so my spelling and grammar isnt that great, and that shentel was copy and pasted from someone else so i did not k now the right spelling

Sorry about that, but every other posting in this thread was spelled properly, so it must have come from somewhere else.

As far as getting nTelos to build out LTE faster/better/stronger, not sure there is anything that you can do to make them do that. There is nothing in their contract with you that says they must provide LTE. Only Sprint can rattle the cage some and get them moving. And even then it may take some time.

I created an account just to add to the confusion with nTelos and Sprint LTE.

Since last Monday my wife and I have been experiencing horrible reliability and speeds with Sprint in the Stoney Point area of Charlottesville.

I called Sprint to see what's up. We've been dropping to 1x mostly and poor 3g when it isn't just gone. The rep I spoke to claimed this is due to tower upgrades. She claimed the upgrade was for LTE.

I've lurked this forum for a bit so I tried hard to throw some curves. I asked about nTelos and she wouldn't say a word. I asked repeatedly if she was sure it was an LTE upgrade. She insisted it was and the information was being supplied by whatever screen she was using.

Now I told her I believed there were troubles with nTelos...she insisted.

I asked her if she was 100% certain. I had heard rumor after rumor in regards to LTE coming to Charlottesville. She insisted.

Now in town, 3g is quick. Not super great but good enough. I struggle to believe our area would be first. Open Signal shows nothing being reported.

My wife turns LTE on and her phone is unusable for anything but phone calls. Mine actually improves a little over 3g/2g setting.

There you have it. All I know. I'm guessing the reality is tower work but not 4g. I know the nearest tower is 5(?) Miles away. I haven't time to try and track it down.

Of course I'll post IF hell freezes over and LTE makes an appearance.

Shentel has a great network. Ntelos, on the other hand, not so much. The next time you go to NY (assuming NYC), if you're on I-81, watch your phone and it will be on LTE for 99% of your trip from just before Harrisonburg VA until you turn off onto I-78. That is Shentel territory. Then you hit Sprint native territory just a little bit after getting on I-78.

    • Definite usage quirks in hunting down these sites with a rainbow sim in a s24 ultra. Fell into a hole yesterday so sent off to T-Mobile purgatory. Try my various techniques. No Dish. Get within binocular range of former Sprint colocation and can see Dish equipment. Try to manually set network and everybody but no Dish is listed.  Airplane mode, restart, turn on and off sim, still no Dish. Pull upto 200ft from site straight on with antenna.  Still no Dish. Get to manual network hunting again on phone, power off phone for two minutes. Finally see Dish in manual network selection and choose it. Great signal as expected. I still think the 15 minute rule might work but lack patience. (With Sprint years ago, while roaming on AT&T, the phone would check for Sprint about every fifteen minutes. So at highway speed you could get to about the third Sprint site before roaming would end). Using both cellmapper and signalcheck.net maps to hunt down these sites. Cellmapper response is almost immediate these days (was taking weeks many months ago).  Their idea of where a site can be is often many miles apart. Of course not the same dataset. Also different ideas as how to label a site, but sector details can match with enough data (mimo makes this hard with its many sectors). Dish was using county spacing in a flat suburban area, but is now denser in a hilly richer suburban area.  Likely density of customers makes no difference as a poorer urban area with likely more Dish customers still has country spacing of sites.
    • Mike if you need more Dish data, I have been hunting down sites in western Columbus.  So far just n70 and n71 reporting although I CA all three.
    • Good catch! I meant 115932/119932. Edited my original post I've noticed the same thing lately and have just assumed that they're skipping it now because they're finally able to deploy mmWave small cells.
