Well, based on that, it looks like Sprint is indeed the top of the tower. If it is as you said, and the top panels are gone, they may be doing a complete swap which would definitely affect service!

If thats the price for better 3G and 4G LTE i really dont care if i get service or not, and yea i dont get how 3G wouldn't work even when i was standing next to the tower.

Did you have zero service whatsoever? Or was there signal, it just didn't work? Just curious.

Yea I exaggerated a little, I had full bars voice and text were good, 3G useless.

In very rare cases is there going to be a hot swap. Was there not any room up there for one more panel?

 

The whole goal of basically adding a new network next to the old one is so it can be rolled out quickly as no legacy equipment is touched. If there is a service issue they can remotely turn off the new equipment and fire up the old in an instant.

I worked at the fire station right by that tower yesterday and I don't think any work had been done on it. It has legacy stuff on it. The old sprint antennas that is.

It's funny that if you go to those coordinates in Google Maps (not Street View) you can see an AT&T van pulling out of the parking lot.

That's one reason for a hot swap. Another reason they do NV hotswaps is if they have no room for the new cabinets to cohabitate with the legacy cabinets. This is a common factor at many stealth sites.

We don't have the weirdos that require those sites here, but we have plenty of other flavor weirdos here though.

 

I have seen one "tree" tower here. Sticks out like a sore thumb being a dead tree. Not many dead trees here due to rainfall totals and storms knock those dead ones down. A cactus or palm tree one would have looked better. Or hey.. How about mounting the panels on the building across the street for cheaper.

Nothing changed on the tower yet. But definitely 3 guys here. One was unloading stuff from the van backed up to the gate. Knee pads for kneeling and hooking up the cabinets or for climbing? I've never worn knee pads while climbing towers but we also didn't wear helmets and climbed whether it was dark, iced over, etc.

 

Glad to see them FINALLY starting on this one... and the first confirmed actual base station work in this area. Just need a NV panel to 100% confirm this is Sprint work.

 

I've always wondered if contracting companies dig around on this site. Would seem to be creepy if you saw a picture of yourself when you never saw the photographer.

And of course I saved the best of last, the Addis, LA site (interesting site). Only 2 sectors on this one by design since there's really nothing on the backside of this one except for marsh/fields, even the legacy panels were like this on Google Maps. The other carriers in the other cover the marsh though.

 

 

Nothing turned on at this site. I also didn't see any lights on the RRUs.

I'll let you know when it gets fired up and I can actually find some towers near my day to day travels that have work. These are a bit out of my way.

Still nothing turned on at the tower by my house. Work looks to have taken a couple weeks and theyve been wrapped up for almost a month now.I guess they tested while I was at work and turned it back off.

And we have panels up and RRU's. Pretty quick to have three of them up, as 24hrs ago the panels and RRU's were sitting on the ground separated.

 

I see that the one picture from the west bank was not a strap attached to the panel, it was electrical tape holding up the jumpers.

Swung by the Roly Poly on Tchoupitoulas tonight, and remembered there's a tower by the railroad tracks near Dufossat and S. Front (according to the Sprint website map - though, I couldn't find the one by Camp and Napoleon). Clearly my smartphone doesn't have the power to take great clear pictures in the dark, but maybe y'all can make more of this than I can. I don't know that I saw the NV controllers on the ground, and while I still don't know exactly what I'm looking for on the tower, the carriers (?) on the tower looked too small to be the new ones. I'll try to get some better pictures in the daylight.

So is my assessment correct? Or is this tower actually powered up? Any recommendations on what parts to focus on when taking pictures in the day light?

Look at my pictures and you can clearly see the unique panels and the boxes attached to them. Those are the Remote Radio Units. ATT runs a similar setup in our area but the panel is much different.

I believe that is correct. There can be different configurations for heavier use towers though.
