Official Tmobile-Sprint merger discussion thread

Recommended Posts

I love T-mo business, I have about 10 lines in data machines and I rarely have an issue with speed, service, sims or rolling my own devices. I am putting a couple 5G routers on eSIM as soon as I get them built and T-Mobile will accommodate this because they like taking my money.

While I appreciate T-Mobile's urgency with respect to 5G. I hope they understand that the rest of us are still on LTE and they need to take care of us or we can always bolt. Just a reminder...maybe allow us Sprint LTE customers to quickly register on the T-mobile network using e-SIMs.

Saw's been waiting to say this his whole career... He's in his element now post-merger.

He probably has and I'm stoked for him that he can now roll with the big boys!

I find lowband 5G to be a joke. No improvement over LTE.

Sounds like some more PCS spectrum swaps are happening. Which is good cause currently in Rochester MN it is all over the place with no contiguous.

Give it time. Lowband 5G is meant to be complemented by additional 5G spectrum.

Oh definitely. Thou who hath the spectrum can spit hot fire.

He’s watched T-Mobile throw out the snark for years against “dumb and dumber”, not even mentioning Sprint some of the time. He’s also seen their customer adds quarter after quarter, combined with their savvy marketing. Combine that with Masa’s incompetence and lack of support. It must have been infuriating.

Now he’s gone from this:

to this...

This is an issue of us being stuck in the WiMAX like world of non stand-alone 5g and low n71 site density, which is fueled by a desire to cover maximum territory to encourage 5g phone sales. Standalone 5g will give up much better uploads.  My guess is 1 out of every 10 to 15 sites has band 71 in Columbus OH. All spectrum is also not being used. Considering leased and Covid-19 loaned spectrum, we have 35x35 in Columbus. Based on what is seen elsewhere I expect 15x15 n71 and 20x20 b71 almost as soon as possible as it relates to TV stations.

Band 71 is also a result of marketing focus. Give more people a reason to get a 5g phone by having much of the country covered. In rural areas it should make a difference given already lower site density.  Was also used ( unfairly) to justify moving many Sprint S207sers to T-Mobile. Fortunately many of the mistakes can be self corrected with the Samsung Band Selector app. The main winner with 5g is the carriers as it may double capacity.

TMobile's LTE network is in no shape to take on an influx of Sprint customers right now.  The couple times I have forced my Galaxy S10 onto T-Mobile's network while the signal was strong there was a lot of congestion.  B2 was terrible and saw speeds less than 2Mbps and B12 was sorta better usually hummed around 10 to 15Mbps.  I quickly jumped back over to Sprint's network and tend to stay on it as long as possible until I am forced over and if things are not better by then I will bolt to AT&T.

I myself when to visible cause I didn't want to be accessing TMO at my house as it is slow af. Until TMO adds 2.5 and can make use of the PCS I have no interest in them.

If the merger failed, where would that have put TMO going forward?  Absolutely no viable way forward for 5G and beyond? Hope to the spectrum gods that further spectrum would be opened up for sale?

I'm glad it passed. TMO could have tired for CBRS and C band but might have gotten there ass kicked by VZW

They would be forced to probably implement DSS, and focus more on mmw. Battle VZW and ATT in the few remaining sub 6 spectrum auctions.

It wouldn't have been as bad as it seems (at least when compared to Verizon). They could have simply repurposed their AWS band for 5G while the upcoming 3.5 Ghz auction was sorted out.

Funny enough, there doesn't seem to be any indication from T-Mobile that they're going to take a backseat in the next few auctions. They're all in.

Some people are saying now that the merger did pass with all the B41 they have that it's unfair to keep all the PCS. Example Rochester MN again, after the swap TMobile will have 35x35 vzw 20x20 and att 10x10. What is everyone else's thoughts. I am kind of surprised.

I'm ok with it. AT&T and Verizon have had the same advantage in other markets for years. Fortunately (or unfortunately...depending on how you see the merger), thetables have turned on the Big 2.

In Dallas, for example, At&t owns 24 Mhz of 700 Mhz, All 50 Mhz in the Cellular Band, and now leases 20 Mhz of 750 Mhz (FirstNet). (They were also allowed to buy 40 Mhz of 600 Mhz, but have since sold it.)

That's a total of 94 Mhz of lowband spectrum they control (47x47 FDD).

In my area band 4 when my phone catches it yields 35MBps. Then a moment later it falls to band 26 with 2Mbps. I'm disappointed in band 2/25. It is still Sprint's band 25 with no help from T-Mobile's band 2. I thought they were going to merge band 2/25 rather quickly. Maybe I am impatient?

Sprints network still needs B25 so until sprints customers are moved over you will not see TMO make use of it. Some cites where sprint has 20x20 they could trim it down on the sprint network and move it over to TMO. The 10x10 or 2 5x5 areas not for a while

Definitely. In my area Sprint has G and two non-contiguous segments of the C-block separated by Verizon. T-Mobile has the A block. If they just can get Verizon on C1 then they can have two separate 15x15 contiguous PCS segments.

    • Since this is kind of the general chat thread, I have to share this humorous story (at least it is to me): Since around February/March of this year, my S22U has been an absolute pain to charge. USB-C cables would immediately fall out and it progressively got worse and worse until it often took me a number of minutes to get the angle of the cable juuuussst right to get charging to occur at all (not exaggerating). The connection was so weak that even walking heavily could cause the cable to disconnect. I tried cleaning out the port with a stable, a paperclip, etc. Some dust/lint/dirt came out but the connection didn't improve one bit. Needless to say, this was a MONSTER headache and had me hating this phone. I just didn't have the finances right now for a replacement.  Which brings us to the night before last. I am angry as hell because I had spent five minutes trying to get this phone to charge and failed. I am looking in the port and I notice it doesn't look right. The walls look rough and, using a staple, the back and walls feel REALLY rough and very hard. I get some lint/dust out with the staple and it improves charging in the sense I can get it to charge but it doesn't remove any of the hard stuff. It's late and it's charging, so that's enough for now. I decide it's time to see if that hard stuff is part of the connector or not. More aggressive methods are needed! I work in a biochem lab and we have a lot of different sizes of disposable needles available. So, yesterday morning, while in the lab I grab a few different sizes of needles between 26AWG and 31 AWG. When I got home, I got to work and start probing the connector with the 26 AWG and 31 AWG needle. The stuff feels extremely hard, almost like it was part of the connector, but a bit does break off. Under examination of the bit, it's almost sandy with dust/lint embedded in it. It's not part of the connector but instead some sort of rock-hard crap! That's when I remember that I had done some rock hounding at the end of last year and in January. This involved lots of digging in very sandy/dusty soils; soils which bare more than a passing resemblance to the crap in the connector. We have our answer, this debris is basically compacted/cemented rock dust. Over time, moisture in the area combined with the compression from inserting the USB-C connector had turned it into cement. I start going nuts chiseling away at it with the 26 AWG needle. After about 5-10 minutes of constant chiseling and scraping with the 26AWG and 31AWG needles, I see the first signs of metal at the back of the connector. So it is metal around the outsides! Another 5 minutes of work and I have scraped away pretty much all of the crap in the connector. A few finishing passes with the 31AWG needle, a blast of compressed air, and it is time to see if this helped any. I plug my regular USB-C cable and holy crap it clicks into place; it hasn't done that since February! I pick up the phone and the cable has actually latched! The connector works pretty much like it did over a year ago, it's almost like having a brand new phone!
    • That's odd, they are usually almost lock step with TMO. I forgot to mention this also includes the September Security Update.
    • 417.55 MB September security update just downloaded here for S24+ unlocked   Edit:  after Sept security update install, checked and found a 13MB GP System update as well.  Still showing August 1st there however.
    • T-Mobile is selling the rest of the 3.45GHz spectrum to Columbia Capital.
    • Still nothing for my AT&T and Visible phones.
