Hurricane Florence

Recommended Posts

Florence looks like it is going to be a very dangerous storm for the East Coast. It's a little too early to say where exactly it may make landfall, but anywhere from South Carolina to Virginia could be a target. The highest probability for severe wind impacts looks to be from Myrtle Beach to Morehead City, but of course that can change as the storm wobbles. Hopefully all of our members in the area are monitoring forecast updates closely. If you are along the coast, please make plans to evacuate! This storm is likely going to bring an unusually large storm surge because of the unusual path it is taking toward the coast.

Let us know how you are doing and, of a lesser priority of course, how the network holds up.

I myself might be in the path of the Winds and outer bands. I have a significant other who lives in North Carolina so I do hope she stay safe. Plus I'm a trained Skywarn spotter so I will definitely be watching with interest and intent.

I live in New Jersey. But I may get lots of the Wind and Rain. I'm watching the weather patterns and the few weather systems coming through. So I do hope it sweeps it out to see but that's looking more and more unrealistic.

The storm's winds will have slowed some by the time it reaches Central Virginia, but it sounds like we'll get a lot of rain. The ground here is still quite wet from repeated storm systems throughout the summer. We may get more fallen trees as a result.

Yeah if the storm slows down once it makes landfall like the models are showing right now... could be tons of rainfall. Way too much.

I expect Florida will have minimal effects overall. There will be an increased rip current risk on the Atlantic coast. But beyond that, most of the impacts wind and rain wise will be north of the state.

I'm a ham, so if the cell and landlines go down, still have my ham radio equipment and plenty of battery back up.

I also have a gmrs radio license so if the lines go down I can also use the radio.

Looks like the hurricane eye may track north of me.  I will report anything I see from this end.  Praying for everyone in its path.

I am near Hilton Head SC.  It is projected to hit anywhere from Charleston (about 60 miles away) or on up the coast a couple hundred miles further North.

The major effects almost certainly will. You could get some rain after the storm spins down, but the major wind and storm surge will almost definitely be well to your south.

I am praying that that happens. But I'm also praying for the people who are in the direct path of the storm. If I'm able to do anything please let me know.

Walmart covered their windows with plywood yesterday.  We are not in the projected path of the eye, but people are getting ready.

A large hurricane can have damaging winds out to 150 miles in any direction from the eye (300 mile wide path of destruction).  Very high storm surge flooding and severe damaging thunderstorms can extend out another 100  miles or more further out than that in any direction (500 mile wide path of flooding).  Your best bet if evacuating is to get well more than 300 miles away from the predicted eye center.

Stay safe my friends.

Don't forget Virginia to, this storm is a class4  beast and it's strength is increasing, they have it taking further north eye going north of Wilmington, Norfolk put all working ships out to sea.

They came by with a loudspeaker and told everyone to get out ... Then about an hour later the Governor cancelled the order to evacuate.  Glad I stayed put.

    • The set up took several times and really was a hit or miss for me. I tried the wifi option and it kept timing out, however; when I unplugged the pebble then replugged it in, after the LED light sequence set up it was a solid green light then flashes when connected. I think that when inputting in the wifi info, it showed as timing out, but the info went through b/c I see that it flashes when I am near. The first time it happened I was a bit surprised and just gave up as it not working so I unplugged it then replugged it and the light was green.   My wifi router that connects into the cable is indoors, so that won't work for me. If you cannot use the antenna with the ethernet cord then don't use it b/c it will not work if it cannot lock a GPS signal according to the instructions.
    • I'm guessing that's the case. I spoke with 2 different reps on 2 different dates (both were clearly American) and both told me the launch date was June 12th. The second time I called I asked the guy "are you sure about the June 12th launch date and are you sure that it's the V60". He said yes I'm absolutely sure. He said they wouldn't know anything about pricing until June 12th but he was sure about the launch.
    • I am also interested in what T-Mobile or Dish will do with the b26 spectrum. While Dish has an option to buy it after 3 years and a penalty if they don't, I am not sure why they would want to. I would like for T-Mobile to sell it to the Cellular Carriers (band 5) and have them redo band 5 to they can each have 15x15 allocations.
    • It will be very interesting to watch a greenfield 5G network being built from the ground up. From what I understand it will be based on open RAN and C-RAn it that the equivalent of enodeB and RRUS can reside in the cloud virtualized as software and ran on general purpose computers. Of course, there are tradeoffs in that you need low latency/high bandwidth connectivity between your antennas and the rest of the network. So a successful network strategy will probably have to mix and match depending on whether you're talking about urban, suburban and rural. In urban setting you could virtualize both the enodeB and the RRU, for the suburban setting virtualize the enodeB but keep the RRU as hardware and in rural setting keep both as hardware.
    • So help me understand something.. 1st, i have a handful of phones about ready for upgrades (still not impressed with the UPGRADE offer but what ever) As I am reading, IF you get one of the S-20s  Does the "update" kick you on to native Tmo, with sprint as the backup?? Because I had Tmo for a little while, and wasnt that impressed.. Where I am at in utah (north of salt lake) Sprint is better in 90% of the areas... So i dont want to cut my nose off here, if all it is, is a jump bac on Tmo, until all the merging is done...At which point I am sure it will be AWESOME...
