It was weird, data still worked great but voice and sms were useless.

I think it's more likely a local IMS server went down. I wonder if voice and text would have worked if in 3G only mode.

Sprint doesn't have IMSs. There is no voice over LTE...

They actually do have IMS, it's used for SMS over LTE, and I believe it also plays a role in eCSFB.

I'm not certain it actually is. I can't find anything that confirms it, so I may be mistaken. My understanding though was that eCSFB and IMS were coupled together (maybe IMS sends the initial message to switch to CDMA?). Huh. What's weird is on my att iPhone, in settings>general>about there is a thing called "IMS Status" and its value is "Voice & SMS" but I can't seem to find that on my sprint iPhone. I have also seen this on tmo and vz iPhones...

That's because Sprint doesn't send SMS over wifi calling on the iphone. It says only "voice" in that field on a sprint variant.
