Sprint "Open World" plan (replaces International Value Roaming)

Is that with open world or global roaming?

Global Roaming.

It's fairly unusable depending on your level of patience. I was frustrated even using Uber. Loading any websites with even basic images are a pain as well.

It's okay mainly to check up on email.

I wonder if Sprint completely abandoned trying to work roaming agreements with carriers from the other missing countries since they don't seem to care at all that some of the major countries are still missing on their map.

I believe that my mobile devices should just work in as many places as possible without me having to do anything special or charging me a huge cost.  This ability to use my mobile device where ever I am is something that I expect to be included in every plan with no need to buy something special or go online and add a global roaming feature.  I need voice calling, SMS messaging and at least a slow data connection to be able to send and receive iMessages, MMS, send and receive email, and navigate me through unfamiliar places in other countries.  These are things that I think are important for my personal safety and to get me to where I need to be when traveling.  I really do not want to be in a situation where I am getting no service where I am traveling but there is mobile service available that Sprint has not made a roaming agreement with.

I can wait while some of my apps refresh their data slowly or if it takes a while to download my email or send a new email.  If I need any type of streaming or other higher bandwidth functionality, I can use WiFi or pay additional for 1GB of higher speed.  I would like Sprint to make paying for that higher data speed easy so that I can do that when necessary. It should default back to low speed automatically when the additional amount of high speed data that I paid for has been used up or expires.

Worded nicely and I think echoes the sentiments of everyone here. A future we can all hope for. :-)

I only travel 1-2 times a year but Sprint's international offers are certainly something I consider when weighing against another carrier.

If you travel to Central and South America, Sprint has the best roaming deal in the business. But if your travel is mainly in Canada and/or Mexico, At&t and T-Mobile offer the perfect roaming package.

Man I really wish Sprint would bump up the international roaming 2G speeds from 64 kbps to at least 128 kbps to make it decent. Even Tmobile is doubling their international roaming 2G speeds to 256 kbps starting tomorrow on the Tmobile One plan.

As do I. I travel to the Caribbean on cruises on average 1-2x a year, and when you're in port for only a few hours it doesn't make sense to buy a local SIM. The slow and free global roaming Sprint provides is plenty to catch up on texts, check email, and even make FaceTime audio calls. It offers a lot of value for me.

Where has T-Mobile said this? Reading the press release they only mention including HD video and upping hotspot to 10 GB on the One plan.

Alright thanks. I guess because I was reading the release on mobile I only saw the text, not the chart.

I gotta say that this is one of the main things that keep me with sprint.

The 1 GB is a very attractive option for travelers in the Americas. And overages aren't expensive either.

The only flaw I wish Sprint would fix is LTE roaming. Everyone else does it.

And free calls while in Latin America. It's awesome and they are the only ones that offer it afaik. The $30/gb is also very competitive if you keep open world and travel to Europe etc

Has anyone been on a cruise to the Bahamas or any other place while using Sprint Open World?

Yep, I've cruised to the Bahamas while on Open World. I posted about it earlier in this thread.

Does Sprint ever make announcements anymore regarding Sprint Global Roaming partners?  It would be nice to get a heads up on newly added countries.

I haven't noticed them, but they might. I just check the above site leading up to any planned trips to see which countries have roaming and which carriers (you can manually select the carrier you're using depending on coverage and capacity at a given location. Pretty convenient).

It seems like sprint did this to avoid churn to T-Mobile but hasn't really pushed it out hard. Most people that travel extensively internationally still think of T-Mobile as the go to company. Not sprint.

Open World is now discontinued.

Better hold on to it while you can if you prefer that.  Though $25/week for most areas might be better.

Still 2G and has day passes for high speed

They should continue the free 1 gig in Canada and Mexico at least. Every other carrier offers free roaming in these two countries.

See the new global roaming.

Unlimited free everything including LTE data in North America but only for those with unlimited plans.

Unlimited 2G data, text and 20¢/min calls everywhere with options to upgrade to LTE data for:

Canada/Mexico: $5/day, $25/week

China: $10/day, $50/week

Everywhere else: $5/day, $25/week

    • It took a couple of months but this site is finally back online.  I was certain that a decommission permit would come through one day since it was offline for over 3 months but I passed by it today and it was working again. — — — — — This site is also finally live. This was probably the longest I had ever seen a site take to go live once all hardware was installed, about 3 months. Hopefully the site in Long Island City doesn't take as long.
    • So while we wait for @RAvirani to fix the website, I was able to connect one of my phones to Verizon n77 on a site with an NCI that appears to be adjacent to an NCI that was already in my database. Specifically, the site I call Taylor Run has been observed with these NCIs on n77: 44EEE469A 44EEE46AA 44EEE46AB 44EEE46BA 44EEE46BB I separately connected to the site I call Fairlington on its beta sector on n77: 44EEE46DA 44EEE46DB I'm assuming alpha sector is 44EE46CA/B.  With this data, I learned two things: 1) They're clearly not tracking the LTE GCIs with the NR NCIs.  Taylor Run is 1B61Fxx, while Fairlington is 1B680xx, not sequential. 2) It's clear that they're not using three byte sectors.  They're not even using two byte sectors like LTE does.  It looks to be done in an oddball fashion like how Dish is doing things.  Best I can come up with is a site ID that's something like: (NCI-0x20)/(0x30) It's possible it's actually (NCI+0x10)/(0x30) but I'm not really sure.  I also haven't connected to anything outside my immediate area here to know if this is consistent with other regions.  Not entirely sure how to persuade a device to do so, my Dish phone just connects to n77 at random in lieu of going to no signal.  (No data passes.) My take is to "break" the site notes for Verizon NR the way it was done with Dish NR, so at least the notes don't get copied to inconsistent sites, as has happened when I connected to Fairlington (came up as "Taylor Run").  It seems that Verizon, AT&T, and Dish all need work on the NR side to make sure site notes work properly.  Frustrating that they didn't standardize that for NR the way they did for LTE.  T-Mobile and US Cellular (while it lasts) seem to have done it the way I would have done it.  The others, not so much. - Trip
    • I tried to access that forum but it says I need a password. Is it limit to certain contributors?    I was going to report that the website is broken. For days it's been saying unable to retrieve signal data then going to a 404 error.
    • Sorry, I forgot about it when I posted previously.  And then I was talking to chamb by e-mail and away from my computer and suggested posting here.  Moved the posts to the proper spot. - Trip
    • It is probably better to post topics related to the map in the dedicated thread to help keep things organized and secure. This thread is big enough as it is, just want to try help keep things on track!
