Sprint "Open World" plan (replaces International Value Roaming)

except for Belize, French Guiana, Guyana and Suriname.

These countires also have very strong ties with Europe. Knowing absolutly nothing about their telecom area,  I woldnt be surprised if their ownership and technology is europe-focussed rather than usa-focussed like the rest of the americas (aside from Brazil that leans Japan)

I don't know if I agree with that. Many of the countries in Latin America in the Caribbean still maintain strong ties with their former colonizers. My thinking is that it has to do with competition. In many of these countries you have a fair amount of carriers available. In the Anglo-Caribbean nations what we often find is that there is only one or two carriers available. This makes it a less competitive atmosphere for roaming negotiations. They don't have much incentive to lower prices for Sprint to roam there and because T-Mobile has set up a roaming agreement already (likely reciprocal), it'll be hard for Sprint to offer them something in return to lower price.

  • 2 weeks later...

Open World works great in Mexico City and Toluca. As soon as my phone registered on the Movistar network, I got a text from Sprint confirming the Open World plan. Calls/texts and in and out to US and Mexican numbers, no problem.

My LG G2 will not connect to data for some reason so I will leave the data to hotel wifi. SCP screencaps coming soon I hope.

Have you twittled with the roaming settings? How about calling Sprint support? Data should be working if Voice is working.

Data started working this morning though it was mostly unusable Edge with some hspa+ here and there.

I might be traveling to Chiapas in Mexico this fall. The Sprint website used to have maps of roaming coverage in Mexico, but I cant find those maps anymore.

Anyone know where they are?

Go to Movistar Mexico webpage for a map. As far as I can tell, Sprint hasn't added international coverage maps to their website like T-Mobile has.

Chiapas? Wow. I have a coworker from Chiapas. Can be a rough place. But probably better than it used to be. I hear it's beautiful though.

I went to Brazil a couple of weeks ago and data and texts worked great. I was on 3g data, but was able to do pretty much everything data wise with little issues.

Here were the two issues I did encounter and I imagine these are temporary issues since it's a new offering:

1) incoming calls had issues. most people would go directly to voicemail when calling me and they would have to attempt calling me several times before going through.

2) sometimes the system would disconnect and data would stop working. I would have to then go on airplane mode and wait some seconds and then go back on the network before it would work again.

All in all, i was very impressed and happy to be able to be connected while traveling abroad. taking pictures and sharing them from south america was a treat.

So I'm in Brazil now (again) and I'm getting "no service" since I landed. On the phone with sprint international customer service. So far they have had me do all kinds of things on my phone to no avail :-/.

Unfortunately this happened when I went to Mexico in May.

Sprint told me to switch my phone from global mode to GSM when I landed in Mexico. Worked okay for voice but had no data. Had to switch the phone back to global for all roaming to work properly. Data worked okay in Toluca but I was unable to get data in Mexico City no matter what.

So after about an hour and a half on the phone with Sprint, the problem was resolved. The wonderful technical support agent went ahead and patched apple in and they instructed me to do a factory wipe and iCloud restore after which the phone started connecting to Vivo once again. Normally I may not have cared except this was the second country/time this had happened at and I wanted to be sure the problem was not going to happen again.

PS. I have had a couple of test calls that came in just fine, so that problem seems to have been fixed as well!

All in all quite impressed with the Sprint customer service levels

Glad it was resolved, even though I would have laughed at them for hours had they suggested that

For sure! The sprint tech kept saying the problem was that the iPhone didn't recognize it was out of the country. I really didn't buy it. But he was on top it it and at the end of the day he was right!

So I got a call from Sprint inquiring if the problem with incoming calls was fixed. I was still in Brazil and told the agent that yes, incoming calls on that trip were coming in fine. He told me there was a missing software patch with Telefonica that had caused the problem.

So i guess I helped identify a pretty major problem with calls in Brazil. Gotta say I was very impressed that Sprint followed up on this problem and kept inquiring if the problem had been fixed, weeks after I called to the report the problem.

I couldn't get any service in France but is fine in UK. France isn't part of the international free plans.

I think I'm going to switch from the international free plan to the Open World plan. 2G data is so painfully slow that it isn't worth it. I shouldn't have to wait around for minutes in hopes I can bring up a simple direction in Google maps.

I could do the buckets of data but this is better at 1GB/$30.

For sure. I think that when I go to Europe next, I'll just keep the Sprint Open World plan. $30 or less for using the phone while abroad isn't bad. Paired with wifi calling and the free texts, I'll be a happy camper.

As another user reported for some reason this is really taxing my battery, even though I'm in GSM only mode. Bring backup power!

Just did speed test in London and got 2 mbps. Much better than 64k max!

Cheers!

Looks like Sprint has quietly updated their partner carriers, sadly just after my vacation to SBH where Digicel would've been helpful... :(

Sprint Global Roaming offers free, unlimited data at up to 2G speeds and text messages. Plus, calling is just 20¢/min. Sprint Global Roaming is currently offered through the following carriers when traveling abroad: Altice, Digicel, H3, Lime, Optus, Partner, Rogers, SK Telecom, Softbank, Spark, Telefonica, Tigo and Vimplecom

Either way, great to see expansion continue!

    • Since this is kind of the general chat thread, I have to share this humorous story (at least it is to me): Since around February/March of this year, my S22U has been an absolute pain to charge. USB-C cables would immediately fall out and it progressively got worse and worse until it often took me a number of minutes to get the angle of the cable juuuussst right to get charging to occur at all (not exaggerating). The connection was so weak that even walking heavily could cause the cable to disconnect. I tried cleaning out the port with a stable, a paperclip, etc. Some dust/lint/dirt came out but the connection didn't improve one bit. Needless to say, this was a MONSTER headache and had me hating this phone. I just didn't have the finances right now for a replacement.  Which brings us to the night before last. I am angry as hell because I had spent five minutes trying to get this phone to charge and failed. I am looking in the port and I notice it doesn't look right. The walls look rough and, using a staple, the back and walls feel REALLY rough and very hard. I get some lint/dust out with the staple and it improves charging in the sense I can get it to charge but it doesn't remove any of the hard stuff. It's late and it's charging, so that's enough for now. I decide it's time to see if that hard stuff is part of the connector or not. More aggressive methods are needed! I work in a biochem lab and we have a lot of different sizes of disposable needles available. So, yesterday morning, while in the lab I grab a few different sizes of needles between 26AWG and 31 AWG. When I got home, I got to work and start probing the connector with the 26 AWG and 31 AWG needle. The stuff feels extremely hard, almost like it was part of the connector, but a bit does break off. Under examination of the bit, it's almost sandy with dust/lint embedded in it. It's not part of the connector but instead some sort of rock-hard crap! That's when I remember that I had done some rock hounding at the end of last year and in January. This involved lots of digging in very sandy/dusty soils; soils which bare more than a passing resemblance to the crap in the connector. We have our answer, this debris is basically compacted/cemented rock dust. Over time, moisture in the area combined with the compression from inserting the USB-C connector had turned it into cement. I start going nuts chiseling away at it with the 26 AWG needle. After about 5-10 minutes of constant chiseling and scraping with the 26AWG and 31AWG needles, I see the first signs of metal at the back of the connector. So it is metal around the outsides! Another 5 minutes of work and I have scraped away pretty much all of the crap in the connector. A few finishing passes with the 31AWG needle, a blast of compressed air, and it is time to see if this helped any. I plug my regular USB-C cable and holy crap it clicks into place; it hasn't done that since February! I pick up the phone and the cable has actually latched! The connector works pretty much like it did over a year ago, it's almost like having a brand new phone!
    • That's odd, they are usually almost lock step with TMO. I forgot to mention this also includes the September Security Update.
    • 417.55 MB September security update just downloaded here for S24+ unlocked   Edit:  after Sept security update install, checked and found a 13MB GP System update as well.  Still showing August 1st there however.
    • T-Mobile is selling the rest of the 3.45GHz spectrum to Columbia Capital.
    • Still nothing for my AT&T and Visible phones.
