T-Mobile LTE & Network Discussion V2

The main difference is the call itself... one is (4G LTE) is done in a typical wireless call fashion.... VoLTE is a voice-call over the data side of the network... The "experts" on this forum can pick this up and explain further.    Basically VoLTE allows a more efficient use of the network because the call is treated like a packet of data...

Also with VoLTE voice traffic is priority over all traffic. So even in congested areas you should be able to make and receive calls with no issues.

Yesterday, WRC and WMPT transitioned to their new channels, clearing some of 600 MHz in the DC area.

Got back from the southern part of the state today.  Wow, has T-Mobile lit up.  I locked my phone to Band 71 today, and I've connected to 26 of them so far since Friday, assuming Culpeper and Fauquier are not part of the market.  (They were running before Friday.)  That includes near-constant connection on B71 from about the Fairfax-Prince William County line to home south of Alexandria.

Here are t mobile small cells in north Denver off pecos at around 73rdish. There is an actual site off 88th and pecos. Fastest speed ever for me. Yes I was right in front of it. b27fdb514678eb391791b2ffd8c3ca04.jpgd21dbcaab57523a2141cd99a07751798.jpg1120bfd9e46f73273d76f4a28a107d1a.jpg

So band 71 is new here but useless. My phone was staying on band 2 at -120 to 125, then catch band 12 which wasn't much help, and then band 71 didn't help. I wasn't far from the site and no really big obstacles blocking signal. I'm assuming it's still being tested? 8415e388cd540694fcae8418d8476c86.jpga7b0e70b606dc6f33e9bae981278086b.jpg

So here is this site now with it's base station now. Not live yet. It does have the typical GPS antenna that t mobile uses. I'm wondering if this is a new dish site? Also they're three t mobile sites not far from this site. bd9472bee79772fdccf5f0bd650d7d16.jpg227259868e49391fca7a209c17ef833c.jpg

That looks like a T-Mobile 600-ready setup. Dual Commscope antennas.

Haven't seen one like this.  Do you know the logical reason for why carriers have different antenna setups?

Size/weight/structural limitations are the most common reason. Carriers try to deploy bigger/heavier higher-gain antennas where possible and resort to smaller/lighter lower-gain antennas when necessary.

Carriers also have different setups for different beamwidths (e.g. in my market, Verizon uses different antennas for sites with 90° sector spacing than for sites with 120° sector spacing).

Lastly, carriers may use different antennas that are the same size due to their different gain characteristics. For example, Sprint stocks two different 72" octoport dualband antennas. Their 800/1900 gain figures are 14.7/18.0 for the RFS variety and 15.0/17.2 for the Commscope variety.

No generator from what I see, and that's common around here for both Sprint & T-Mobile. Southern LINC, AT&T, and Verizon have generators at every site.

Unlike Sprint however, T-Mobile phones don't typically roam when a tower goes offline due to a power failure. You're just stuck with no signal. Both Sprint and T-Mobile lose signal between 45 minutes and 2 hours every time we have a power outage. My Sprint line roams on Verizon 1x and AT&T LTE, whereas my T-Mobile phone displays no service. SoLINC of course stays up for me.

All the Dish site plans I have seen through permits indicate protection sites.  Typically just one antenna and RRH.

I'm definitely an expert in that region. What can I do for you?

Ok so my lives off juanita drive and 170th. She currently has sprint and likes her service there,  she claims her brother who has t mobile doesn't have great service there.  Trying to get my mom to switch cause it will be cheaper.  Sprint and t mobile share a site so I'm not believing my mom that t mobile sucks there.  So just wondering if you been around that area and if service is decent? Also how is t mobile there compared to sprint?

The problem with T-Mobile in that area is capacity.

T-Mobile has a site on the Peoples Storage building (6908 NE 181st St, Kenmore, WA 98028), although that site is always very congested. This is because it is the only site that serves WA-522 as well as the commercial and residential surrounding areas. To make matters worse, the site is 1900/2100 only, and she lives on the beta-gamma sector split.

Sprint has three sites serving that area (one on the Peoples Storage building, one at 47.7582566, -122.2599984 and one at 47.7562238, -122.2395026). These sites do a significantly better job with both coverage and capacity in the area.

Well shoot,  my mom was right.  Haha. So I guess she should stick it out for now and pay the price.  Thank you for the great info I will pass that on. Wish there was a way to find out legit upgrades coming to that site.  I should try and get a ticket started?

    • Since this is kind of the general chat thread, I have to share this humorous story (at least it is to me): Since around February/March of this year, my S22U has been an absolute pain to charge. USB-C cables would immediately fall out and it progressively got worse and worse until it often took me a number of minutes to get the angle of the cable juuuussst right to get charging to occur at all (not exaggerating). The connection was so weak that even walking heavily could cause the cable to disconnect. I tried cleaning out the port with a stable, a paperclip, etc. Some dust/lint/dirt came out but the connection didn't improve one bit. Needless to say, this was a MONSTER headache and had me hating this phone. I just didn't have the finances right now for a replacement.  Which brings us to the night before last. I am angry as hell because I had spent five minutes trying to get this phone to charge and failed. I am looking in the port and I notice it doesn't look right. The walls look rough and, using a staple, the back and walls feel REALLY rough and very hard. I get some lint/dust out with the staple and it improves charging in the sense I can get it to charge but it doesn't remove any of the hard stuff. It's late and it's charging, so that's enough for now. I decide it's time to see if that hard stuff is part of the connector or not. More aggressive methods are needed! I work in a biochem lab and we have a lot of different sizes of disposable needles available. So, yesterday morning, while in the lab I grab a few different sizes of needles between 26AWG and 31 AWG. When I got home, I got to work and start probing the connector with the 26 AWG and 31 AWG needle. The stuff feels extremely hard, almost like it was part of the connector, but a bit does break off. Under examination of the bit, it's almost sandy with dust/lint embedded in it. It's not part of the connector but instead some sort of rock-hard crap! That's when I remember that I had done some rock hounding at the end of last year and in January. This involved lots of digging in very sandy/dusty soils; soils which bare more than a passing resemblance to the crap in the connector. We have our answer, this debris is basically compacted/cemented rock dust. Over time, moisture in the area combined with the compression from inserting the USB-C connector had turned it into cement. I start going nuts chiseling away at it with the 26 AWG needle. After about 5-10 minutes of constant chiseling and scraping with the 26AWG and 31AWG needles, I see the first signs of metal at the back of the connector. So it is metal around the outsides! Another 5 minutes of work and I have scraped away pretty much all of the crap in the connector. A few finishing passes with the 31AWG needle, a blast of compressed air, and it is time to see if this helped any. I plug my regular USB-C cable and holy crap it clicks into place; it hasn't done that since February! I pick up the phone and the cable has actually latched! The connector works pretty much like it did over a year ago, it's almost like having a brand new phone!
    • That's odd, they are usually almost lock step with TMO. I forgot to mention this also includes the September Security Update.
    • 417.55 MB September security update just downloaded here for S24+ unlocked   Edit:  after Sept security update install, checked and found a 13MB GP System update as well.  Still showing August 1st there however.
    • T-Mobile is selling the rest of the 3.45GHz spectrum to Columbia Capital.
    • Still nothing for my AT&T and Visible phones.
