IBEZ 800MHz Retrofit

Recommended Posts

They for sure do...sadly, at this rate, the 600mhz spectrum might be clear for use before SMR. Lol

The huge delays, while not really Sprint's fault, is partly why I think not participating in the 600MHz auction in at least a limited manner will be considered a mistake long-term. Unfortunately I don't think they could even if they wanted to, either.

Hey guys, I think I may have found the first 800mhz antenna installation in the Seattle area (an IBEZ region)!!! But, before I jump to conclusions, because I am not 100% sure, I have attached pictures to see if anyone here can help me verify that my finding is legit. Sprint is the top rack, I believe. Can anyone confirm if the antennas/rrus next to the 8T8R are traditional Samsung NV equipment?

I know the picture is not great (used my iPhone 6S camera on full zoom) but I can see three distinct RRUs on the right...does that mean anything?

I see Tim browsing, he might have a better answer, but all I can make out in that image are the PCS and B41 RRUs. I don't see the SMR RRU.

Don't see 800 MHz radios.

I've only seen 1900MHz sized panels in my area. Never seen panels that look long enough for 800 too, like these. In my part of the Sound, they are 1900 only and 2600 only panels. Any chance of zooming in on the ports to see if they at least support 800 too?

The dual band 800/PCS panels around here are just a smidge taller than the B41 antennas.  Not sure how tall they actually are, but i'd guess it is around a 6" difference.

Yeah we've got the same PCS only equipment up here. I couldn't see the panels super well due to my subpar angle and bad lighting but they struck me as noticeably different than the usual. I'll try to head back there again next week. Roads are hilly in the area and it's too icy out for me to head out before Monday probably.

Yeah I've seen the traditional NV equipment when traveling (in San Francisco for example). I've always wondered why other carriers' lowband antennae were so tall while Sprint could cram 800mhz into such a small antenna...

Most are dedicated low-band while Sprint's equipment are dual tech. The only downside is that you can do limited tilt and power as opposed to dedicated panels.

So basically the big panels ATT, VZW and TMO use are more powerful and more versatile when it comes to aiming sectors?

Just ran across this:

Completion of 800 MHz Band Reconfiguration in Certain Regions

https://www.fcc.gov/document/completion-800-mhz-band-reconfiguration-certain-regions

Can't open the link at work. Which regions are open ? I'm in SoCal so I know I'm screwed lol. Anything on phx or El Paso Texas ?

I have no idea what that means. Can you break that down for us ? Also do you have a source ?

Entitling is the process where the carrier or tower company requests permission to build or alter an existing telecommunications facility with a local agency. In this instance, they are entitling 800 mhz remote radio units on an existing tower. I'll have to be the source on this one, but if you were to pull building permit records from jurisdictions in SoCal, you would most likely see Sprint submissions. If you were to dig deeper, you will see 800mhz RRUs.

Oh ok nice. So does this mean the rebaning has been complete and 800mhz is ready to be rolled out ? When would it start ?

Thanks for the heads up! In Ventura county, it looks like they started submitting permits in October.

Here's a description of one of the permits:

Install (2) new 800/1900 MHz panel antennas, Install (2) new 800/2500 MHz, Install (4) 800 MHz RRHs and [1] new 2500 MHz RRH's.

Any idea of what currently exists at that site?

No, I've never been to any of the 4 sites that have these new permits.

That particular one is marked on the sites complete map as 3G only.

    • Definite usage quirks in hunting down these sites with a rainbow sim in a s24 ultra. Fell into a hole yesterday so sent off to T-Mobile purgatory. Try my various techniques. No Dish. Get within binocular range of former Sprint colocation and can see Dish equipment. Try to manually set network and everybody but no Dish is listed.  Airplane mode, restart, turn on and off sim, still no Dish. Pull upto 200ft from site straight on with antenna.  Still no Dish. Get to manual network hunting again on phone, power off phone for two minutes. Finally see Dish in manual network selection and choose it. Great signal as expected. I still think the 15 minute rule might work but lack patience. (With Sprint years ago, while roaming on AT&T, the phone would check for Sprint about every fifteen minutes. So at highway speed you could get to about the third Sprint site before roaming would end). Using both cellmapper and signalcheck.net maps to hunt down these sites. Cellmapper response is almost immediate these days (was taking weeks many months ago).  Their idea of where a site can be is often many miles apart. Of course not the same dataset. Also different ideas as how to label a site, but sector details can match with enough data (mimo makes this hard with its many sectors). Dish was using county spacing in a flat suburban area, but is now denser in a hilly richer suburban area.  Likely density of customers makes no difference as a poorer urban area with likely more Dish customers still has country spacing of sites.
    • Mike if you need more Dish data, I have been hunting down sites in western Columbus.  So far just n70 and n71 reporting although I CA all three.
    • Good catch! I meant 115932/119932. Edited my original post I've noticed the same thing lately and have just assumed that they're skipping it now because they're finally able to deploy mmWave small cells.
