LG G4 User Thread (Was: Rumor Thread)

He had to wait through all the LG iterations of Gx to finally make this joke! :-D

Yep, you found me out.  I joined S4GRU three years ago and bided my time through 13,000 posts -- just so I could finally make my LG G4 palindrome.

Now, my only reason to live is the hope that "5G" will become a marketing term by the time the LG G5 is released.

Not sure if I'm a fan of the back cover.

The front looks fine. G4 is going to really appeal to the customers with SD cards and a need for the removable battery.

Edit: here's another site with more info.

I'm super disappointed with the rear facing speaker. I thought we'd moved on to front facing speakers in 2015. And 2.1mp "selfie" camera. Why not the 8mp they announced? Appears to have Qi charging though, hopefully without "optional back". I think I'm going to have to go with Samsung S6......or perhaps none at all until the fall crop.

Had the S6 edge on pre-order but decided to not pick it up. I am trying to upgrade my Nexus 5 and although there are a LOT of things to still like about it, the camera is laughable, the battery life is terrible, and google still doesn't have split screen multitasking. The S6 has an awesome camera and I love their mobile payment solution (coming soon), but their battery life is bad, their rf performance seems lacking (more to come on this), their touchwiz skin with Flipboard integration is slow and ugly, the design is not comfortable to hold and, unless you get the edge, slightly dated looking in my opinion.

The G4 on the other hand looks really nice in my opinion (except the leather backs which are fugly). It seems it will be very comfortable to hold. The camera appears to be better at least on paper. There is a large battery which is removable and expandable memory. On the negative, we still don't know about rf performance, how the speaker will sound, the CPU performance, etc. Because I don't want to live with regret, I decided to wait and forgo my free wireless samsung charger.

I'm sure Best Buy will continue to offer incentives for the S6 in the coming weeks.  Afterall, Samsung wants to break sales records with the S6.  My brother just got the S6 Edge and he really likes it.  Also, the battery on it appears to be a bit better than his S5 was, at least in standby.

I think waiting for the G4 is a wise move.  The wireless charger is only a $60 difference so if they offer a $100 off 2/yr contract on the S6 later and you jump on it, you actually ended up saving more.

I am hoping LG releases a highly-spec'ed non-phablet device to compete with the M9 and S6. I find that devices larger than say 5.2" are too large for single handed use and therefore I personally (and I suspect many others) won't consider purchasing them.

The G3 isn't really all that much bigger in the hand than my GS5, 3mm wider iirc. The small bezel helps quite a bit.

I also think those leather backs look sexy. The red one screams terminatrix.

I am glad to see they have multiple options for the back cover. Anyone know what is so special about the Quantum IPS display they are talking about?

Well I was hoping for smaller LG G4 in the range of 5.2-5.3 inches but I guess it will have to be 5.5 inches.  Still can't wait to see the official unveiling to get all the details.

Maybe the QHD LCD is an option for the back cover.  The LG G4 4G GL -- just as I predicted.

I am interested in the maroon leather back cover.

For that, you will have to wait for the maroon G5.

Really disappointed that the backs don't have Qi built in, rear facing single speaker, AND perhaps no Quick Charge on these phones?

But overall, I'm very impressed by this device and those camera tweaks seem like actual improvements and not just gimmicks.  Look forward to the reviews and comparison in real life.....especially that RF information. So happy to see that removable battery.

    • Since this is kind of the general chat thread, I have to share this humorous story (at least it is to me): Since around February/March of this year, my S22U has been an absolute pain to charge. USB-C cables would immediately fall out and it progressively got worse and worse until it often took me a number of minutes to get the angle of the cable juuuussst right to get charging to occur at all (not exaggerating). The connection was so weak that even walking heavily could cause the cable to disconnect. I tried cleaning out the port with a stable, a paperclip, etc. Some dust/lint/dirt came out but the connection didn't improve one bit. Needless to say, this was a MONSTER headache and had me hating this phone. I just didn't have the finances right now for a replacement.  Which brings us to the night before last. I am angry as hell because I had spent five minutes trying to get this phone to charge and failed. I am looking in the port and I notice it doesn't look right. The walls look rough and, using a staple, the back and walls feel REALLY rough and very hard. I get some lint/dust out with the staple and it improves charging in the sense I can get it to charge but it doesn't remove any of the hard stuff. It's late and it's charging, so that's enough for now. I decide it's time to see if that hard stuff is part of the connector or not. More aggressive methods are needed! I work in a biochem lab and we have a lot of different sizes of disposable needles available. So, yesterday morning, while in the lab I grab a few different sizes of needles between 26AWG and 31 AWG. When I got home, I got to work and start probing the connector with the 26 AWG and 31 AWG needle. The stuff feels extremely hard, almost like it was part of the connector, but a bit does break off. Under examination of the bit, it's almost sandy with dust/lint embedded in it. It's not part of the connector but instead some sort of rock-hard crap! That's when I remember that I had done some rock hounding at the end of last year and in January. This involved lots of digging in very sandy/dusty soils; soils which bare more than a passing resemblance to the crap in the connector. We have our answer, this debris is basically compacted/cemented rock dust. Over time, moisture in the area combined with the compression from inserting the USB-C connector had turned it into cement. I start going nuts chiseling away at it with the 26 AWG needle. After about 5-10 minutes of constant chiseling and scraping with the 26AWG and 31AWG needles, I see the first signs of metal at the back of the connector. So it is metal around the outsides! Another 5 minutes of work and I have scraped away pretty much all of the crap in the connector. A few finishing passes with the 31AWG needle, a blast of compressed air, and it is time to see if this helped any. I plug my regular USB-C cable and holy crap it clicks into place; it hasn't done that since February! I pick up the phone and the cable has actually latched! The connector works pretty much like it did over a year ago, it's almost like having a brand new phone!
    • That's odd, they are usually almost lock step with TMO. I forgot to mention this also includes the September Security Update.
    • 417.55 MB September security update just downloaded here for S24+ unlocked   Edit:  after Sept security update install, checked and found a 13MB GP System update as well.  Still showing August 1st there however.
    • T-Mobile is selling the rest of the 3.45GHz spectrum to Columbia Capital.
    • Still nothing for my AT&T and Visible phones.
