Sprint Says It Won’t Take Part in U.S. Airwaves Auction (AWS-3)

Good. Sprint has it's hands full getting devices with bands 4/12/25/26/41, no need to throw another band into the mix. 2.5GHz has plenty of capacity. Plus, this may get Sprint on the FCC's good side concerning having too much high-band spectrum.

Band 4 over the new AWS-1+3 band wouldn't cause any significant change. The new band class would be specified by the end of the first quarter of 2015. As a superset of band 4, supporting both will not require more parts that what is already required to support band 4, just an expanded duplexer and wider range PA to support both band classes.

And AWS-3 spectrum would have been very useful, no matter what. It lines up nicely with Sprint's current site layout, and it would have provided a nice capacity boost with next-generation multi-band phones.

I swear that Sprint already announced its intentions toward AWS-3 and that we already have a thread.  Somebody, please do a search.

I do not know how this is news, but it is on other sites too.  We have known that they do not want to add AWS for a while, it would require cell sites to add additional panels and cards to each site and most phones would not even be capable.  The only way that this would even affect sprint is if someone decides to sell some of their PCS holdings to sprint either to offset the cost of purchasing the new AWS or to justify other future purchases.

I still hope for all things that will help sprint compete, but this auction would really be something that would set them back more than propel them forward.  They should work with the phone manufacturers and 3gpp to make sure that the 600Mhz band is already being baked into future phones and will be able to be used soon after they get the licenses.
