Judging by what I've skimmed in this thread, it sounds like the G3 is a worthwhile upgrade from the Nexus 5? Any Nexus 5 to G3 upgraders who regret making the move. If so, why?

 

I'll probably wait until the Nexus 6 announcement, but if they don't ship something smaller than the 5.9" "Shamu" I'm leaning towards the G3.

 

I'm generally happy with the Nexus 5. My biggest beef is battery life. I'll hand the Nexus 5 down to my wife. She dropped her Evo 4G LTE and messed up the screen and I think she should have a tri-band device, too.

I never had a Nexus 5, but do have a G2.  This is my first day using the G3.  Some observations are: 

 

So far I got 3 Hrs, 30 min S.O.T. with 20% battery left.  This is including downloading all my apps and app setup along with initial phone setup.  I use an app called YAAB (Highly Recommended) to auto adjust brightness - and I keep it cranked.  No use having this beautiful high res screen if you can't see it in its glory.  I expect battery life to get even better after a few discharge/charge cycles.  A big plus is having a removable battery. 

 

The earpiece sound quality is just OK - nothing special.  It's not as good as the G2 - BUT the G2 really was awful at first, then many updates from LG got it sounding really great.  Sound through the microphone tends to be on the warm side.  The loudspeaker is quite loud, but sound is tinny - not a dealbreaker though. 

 

The RF performance is about equal to the G2.  Not as good as some Samsung products that I have used in all the same places.  It's ok though.  The G2 was abysmal at RF performance upon initial release, then LG tweaked it. 

 

The phone is very easy to use, feels good in the hand and comfortable against the ear. 

 

I'm sure through updates the G3 will get even better.  If you are thinking of purchasing - do it.  You won't be disappointed.  I'm very critical and I like the G3 so far.

G3 RF performance is top notch and find it to be superior to last N5 radio with faster scan times and better overall performance. Also better than GS5, Moto X, G2 and HTC One M8 in my testing. 

 

It also doesn't hurt im in a mature market, and having constant access to all three bands helps.

Around the Harrisburg area here, with just B25 and B26, I get about 3 -5 dBm lower than my Mega and my girlfriend's ST4 on B26.

By any chance Band 25 and B41 better than the S4T?

I can't answer the B41 question as we don't have it here yet.  My B26 performance and B25 performance are good.  My girlfriend's S4T reads about 3 dBm higher than my G3 on B26.  My Mega reads about 5 dBm higher on B26.  According to nexgencpu, the RF performance is great on the G3.  Maybe mine compared to Samsung devices being higher is just the way the Samsung phones report the numbers.

So I ended up getting 4 Hrs 28 Min S.O.T before battery went to zero charge.  This to me is outstanding.  I have the brightness cranked way up with YAAB.  This also includes me playing with, and setting up the phone from last evening into today.  I'm happy with this.  We'll see how it goes over the next 4 to 5 discharge/recharge cycles.

I made the switch, and the only thing I miss is easy root, and there's no LTE Only mode.

Dave,

You do know there is an easy root option for the G3 right?

Although currently no unlocked bootloader.

So I took a dive and traded in my G2 for the G3....Couldn't say no...I'm pretty much getting paid to get it. $100 Rewards card back plus Free $70 battery/external charger deal. And got $108 back for the G2 from Sprint....I'll take it...

Just letting you G3 guys know, I'm no longer a part of the party. I ended up going back to iOS for now.

 

I was having too many issues with not getting texts messages from iOS users (almost my whole group of friends and colleagues). I will surely miss my G3! It is a great phone.

 

My pristine G3 is for sale, and that makes me somewhat sad. Great handset!

You really weren't getting texts? Most of my colleges have iPhones, I've never had an issue getting messages from them.

Yup. Despite all of my efforts. It was supremely frustrating, to say the least. Being in the music industry, I have to be able to stay in-touch with my colleagues and management, etc.

 

I really do miss my G3, believe me. It will always have a fond place in my heart.

Its crazy how fast imessage takes over isn't it... And then after normal messaging just doesn't work or it just isn't good enough.

I just don't understand how this problem exists. Why does no one else have this problem?

First I thought it was Sprint with the upgrades on the towers but is apple handling the messages , I got her the LG g2 and problem solved

Now that SMS over LTE is ubiquitous I don't have that complaint much anymore, texts send/receive very fast now!

I thought they fixed the bug as all I have to do anymore is switch off imessage In the iphone before deactivating it and then making sure to uncheck my phone number from the "you can be reached at" options in my other iOS devices and it reverts back to SMS for other iOS users right away. I had many problems with this 2 years ago though...

I was about to order the g3 but its still 199 at sprint for upgrades. Wtf

you can go to best buy and get it cheaper, and if find it somewhere else cheaper they price match, I got mine for 50 dollars

This is an issue and people have complained about it.

 

iMessage links your phone number and your iTunes email address. Sometimes Apple's servers won't disassociate a former iOS users phone number and will keep trying to send the text through the iMessage servers.

 

Group MMS' are where the problem really rears its ugly head. I would receive some messages from some people in my group MMS and not others, all of which are iOS users. It was not good and terribly unreliable.

I can only order from sprint. I'm on sero plan. This easy pay crap has really jacked up the 2 year contract prices

Suck it up and just pay it. I've been on SERO since 2004 and I just use my upgrade. Deal with it quit complaining

Odd that I'd never heard of it until today.

 

So it really is an iOS issue. And not the G3. I feel better now.

I never insinuated that the problem stemmed from the G3, I hold the G3 totally harmless. It is an amazing handset and I surely already miss it.

 

The new iPhone is great in its own right - Is it perfect? IMHO, no. I have many gripes about the new iPhone and very few if any of the G3.

 

I miss the G3's LCD more than anything. I know some people say the iPhone 6+ has a better screen minus pure resolution, but I actually think the G3 has the better screen in just about every category and is actually brighter/easier to read in the daylight.

 

Beyond that, there are a lot of benefits (and curses) to being engulfed in the Apple Ecosystem and for some, it is just too difficult to escape. As good as Android is now, there are some things that iOS just does a little better and vise versa.

 

My ultimate OS would be a combination of iOS and Android.

      Definite usage quirks in hunting down these sites with a rainbow sim in a s24 ultra. Fell into a hole yesterday so sent off to T-Mobile purgatory. Try my various techniques. No Dish. Get within binocular range of former Sprint colocation and can see Dish equipment. Try to manually set network and everybody but no Dish is listed.  Airplane mode, restart, turn on and off sim, still no Dish. Pull upto 200ft from site straight on with antenna.  Still no Dish. Get to manual network hunting again on phone, power off phone for two minutes. Finally see Dish in manual network selection and choose it. Great signal as expected. I still think the 15 minute rule might work but lack patience. (With Sprint years ago, while roaming on AT&T, the phone would check for Sprint about every fifteen minutes. So at highway speed you could get to about the third Sprint site before roaming would end). Using both cellmapper and signalcheck.net maps to hunt down these sites. Cellmapper response is almost immediate these days (was taking weeks many months ago).  Their idea of where a site can be is often many miles apart. Of course not the same dataset. Also different ideas as how to label a site, but sector details can match with enough data (mimo makes this hard with its many sectors). Dish was using county spacing in a flat suburban area, but is now denser in a hilly richer suburban area.  Likely density of customers makes no difference as a poorer urban area with likely more Dish customers still has country spacing of sites.

      Mike if you need more Dish data, I have been hunting down sites in western Columbus.  So far just n70 and n71 reporting although I CA all three.

      Good catch! I meant 115932/119932. Edited my original post I've noticed the same thing lately and have just assumed that they're skipping it now because they're finally able to deploy mmWave small cells.
