Sprint Wifi Calling.....

Probably (and hopefully) iOS 8.2 since that should be out in the coming weeks. I don't need wifi calling but added battery life sounds great.

My office is in the center of my building, so I'm lucky to be on the fringe of a yet-to-be-optimized B26 signal. If I could make/receive calls via WiFi, I'd be pretty happy.

Joe Euteneuer, Chief Financial Officer at Sprint, said on December 2, 2014 that the iPhone 6 would get WiFi calling in the next 60-90 days via download... so it's coming!

Now it's just a waiting game for Apple to release 8.2. I wonder if they will before the end of the year.

Hate to burst your bubble but don't count on 8.2 to include wifi calling. I believe it will be mostly health kit and Apple Watch related updates.

I'm in no rush. It would just be nice to have for battery saving....but I am moving at the end of February to an area of amazing service so I really won't even need it anymore. I really just wan to get rid of this airave lol.

WiFi calling for Sprint's iPhone 6 will likely be activated with a "carrier update" from Sprint rather than an iOS update right? The device already has native support for WiFi calling out of the box (as it does for T-Mobile). Sprint just has to activate it on their end. Opinions?

Usually iOS updates will include any carrier updates. I'm not sure if they do it separately from iOS updates tbh.

They have sent carrier updates out between iOS updates in the past. It's sporadic.

Right that's what I also took that to mean that the phone itself was due to be released soon.

I looked at the software updates for the Aquos Crystal here: http://support.sprint.com/support/article/Find_and_update_the_software_version_on_your_Sharp_AQUOS_Crystal/WServiceAdvisory_542_GKB76042?INTNAV=SU:DP:OV:UG:SharpAquosCrystal:FindAndUpdateTheSoftwareVersionOnYourSharpAquosCry

and didn't see any mention of the international wifi calling update. If you check out other phones like the S4, S5, Mega, Note 3, G3, G Flex, M8, E8, etc. it specifies in one of their software updates when international wifi calling was enabled. When the Aquos Crystal gets it's international wifi calling update it should become listed there.

Thats messed up

Yeah that's what it appears to be, but Carrier Updates can be pushed OTA at any time.

In order for next gen VoWiFi on iPhone 6 to be supported, the operator is required to upgrade their core network with ePDG (evolved Packet Data Gateway) which itself is a fairly new technology. The most notable benefit is seamless handoff to and from VoLTE.

Euteneuer's statement that Sprint WiFi Calling support is coming to iPhone 6 indicates that Sprint is working on these upgrades.

The ePDG is part of a larger upgrade that requires migrating Wi-Fi calling to the 3GPP network core and enabling core access over the IP network. Sprint's current Wi-Fi Calling platform doesn't use the 3GPP network core to begin with, so that's already a pretty huge hurdle to overcome.

Yup, that's what had me completely puzzled while reading Euteneuer's transcript, but since he's a Sprint executive I'm going to assume that he knows what he's talking about.

I suppose that they might have deployed a secondary system just for iPhones in order to support the feature, and slowly migrate to that over the course of the next two to three years. Remember that T-Mobile deployed its system in 2011 alongside the older GAN based one, and transitioned completely over to it in 2012 for new devices? It might be the same thing here.

It's a network resource management nightmare, though. There will be endless conflicts between the two systems, especially if both use the same SIP gateway as an endpoint.

anyone have problems with MMS over WiFi calling? I can't receive photos.

Yeah, I've never been able to send or receive MMS over WiFi calling. I believe I read somewhere that it may be due to billing code issues since I have a business account. A tad annoying.

Well as expected, its not working. My dad is in mexico and it refuses to recognize the address, no matter which way he types it in

I received an update to my Sharp Aquos Crystal and I can no longer use WiFi calling anymore either. It says my home address or any address in my city is not recognized. It worked fine before the update.

Wow...that sux!

I actually had the same problem with the WiFi calling feature on my M8, when it first rolled out 6-8 months ago.

One suggestion that one of the Sprint Reps suggested is to do a SERVICE RESET. [if you need the dialer code, I'll be glad to post it]

While it did not eliminate the problem, it did fix it until I left my home WiFi.

The only thing that finally eliminated the problems with WiFi calling a OTA software update.

I really wish Sprint would add wifi calling capability to the LG G2.  I don't know why its taking them soo long to get this done.  Maybe the Android 5.0 Lollipop update will finally bring this much needed capability.  With Sprint needing to conserve spectrum resources to take loading off of its cell towers you would think that providing wifi calling capabilities to any available capable handset would be a high priority just to give customers more choice.

They have no plans to add wifi calling to the LG G2.

I wonder why.  Is it something technical about the LG G2 that prevents wifi calling to be added or does Sprint think the device is "too old" to even care about wifi calling?

Good question. And, if its too old to be a wifi calling candidate, will it even get Lollipop?

    • Definite usage quirks in hunting down these sites with a rainbow sim in a s24 ultra. Fell into a hole yesterday so sent off to T-Mobile purgatory. Try my various techniques. No Dish. Get within binocular range of former Sprint colocation and can see Dish equipment. Try to manually set network and everybody but no Dish is listed.  Airplane mode, restart, turn on and off sim, still no Dish. Pull upto 200ft from site straight on with antenna.  Still no Dish. Get to manual network hunting again on phone, power off phone for two minutes. Finally see Dish in manual network selection and choose it. Great signal as expected. I still think the 15 minute rule might work but lack patience. (With Sprint years ago, while roaming on AT&T, the phone would check for Sprint about every fifteen minutes. So at highway speed you could get to about the third Sprint site before roaming would end). Using both cellmapper and signalcheck.net maps to hunt down these sites. Cellmapper response is almost immediate these days (was taking weeks many months ago).  Their idea of where a site can be is often many miles apart. Of course not the same dataset. Also different ideas as how to label a site, but sector details can match with enough data (mimo makes this hard with its many sectors). Dish was using county spacing in a flat suburban area, but is now denser in a hilly richer suburban area.  Likely density of customers makes no difference as a poorer urban area with likely more Dish customers still has country spacing of sites.
    • Mike if you need more Dish data, I have been hunting down sites in western Columbus.  So far just n70 and n71 reporting although I CA all three.
    • Good catch! I meant 115932/119932. Edited my original post I've noticed the same thing lately and have just assumed that they're skipping it now because they're finally able to deploy mmWave small cells.
