COUNTDOWN!!! Nextel iDEN Shutdown

Recommended Posts

Interesting.  So this seems to imply that the radios were remotely shut off so that it would stop broadcasting the signal.  I know Sprint still needs to send folks out to turn off the power, remove T-1 backhaul and cabinets for the OPEX savings but if this means that CDMA 800 can be launched faster because the 800 MHz signal all over the US is no longer being broadcasted then this is good news.  I still think it will be a few weeks before we see a large acceptance of 800 CDMA sites but I am hope I am wrong.

Yes, seems pretty cut and dry to me.  Transmitters were cut off but the basestations, cooling, etc are still churning away so someone does need to physically go by and throw the breakers.  I'm sure someone is assigned to drive around to all the sites the crews will not physically remove this month in order to shut off the breakers.  Or it could be as simple as letting the electric companies do it by putting in disconnect orders and they pull the meter.  Hope they pull the right one! ;)

There should be a big uptick in 800SMR but not this massive flood of 800SMR launches either.  It will take time to drive test them and get them online.

Has anyone even seen the first Ericsson site turn on 800 cdma yet?

There are 3 or 4 in the KC area.

Actually, there are many more sites than that operating, their acceptance just hasn't been passed through the system for our maps. AJ was able to capture the signal with his spectrum analyzer. They just aren't accepting users yet.

Additionally, I believe there have been 800 CDMA sightings reported in the Dallas area, but I don't remember for sure.

Yes, I had 800smr at DFW while riding the little rail around the outside from concourse to concourse.

How long ago? Wish I had thought to look when I was there a couple months ago.

Early may. I saw a huge difference in evdo and 1x signals so a quick check and sure enough I was on a distant 800smr site and evdo right in front of me.

Hmm. I was there in late April. Wonder if it was on then. Didn't think to check. Was too frustrated by a struggling LTE signal to think about it.

Indeed.. LTE was very weak there.

Lol we might've crossed paths. I was there the last week of april and I was on LTE while the plane arrived from the runway to the terminal plus spots inside the airport as well as the train between terminals..

Any idea where?  I work in downtown KC and it goes to roaming at 3rd level+ of underground garage, as well as basement elevator of condo on Plaza.  Looking forward to getting native signal in hard to reach areas.  Have SignalCheck app, looking forward to seeing SID of 22xx someday soon.

I work at 11th and Broadway and have some of the same problems in the middle of my building.

As AJ stated, there is a map that gives the location of the upgraded towers.

I will say that there isn't any 800 in downtown though.

Must have been some undisclosed fine print :)

You didn't get his Group Talk announcement?  :) ..... Oh, wait, can't do that anymore....well, at least not with Nextel.

The entries were relatively few, so I decided to wait through Sunday as the actual shutdown date for any additional entries. But, then, I forgot. I will go back through the thread and select the winner tomorrow.

I have a question about the 800 MHz network. As of 7/5 there are only 376 3G/800 and 846 3G/800/4G sites for a total of 1222 sites. Is this because Sprint waited until iDen was shut down to begin adding 800? My biggest question is how many NV sites will eventually be upgraded with 800? All of them, or only some? Also, since the network was already in place, but not necessarily part of NV, are there more than the listed 1222 800 MHz sites operating? Thanks.

Are you referring to the Nextel iDEN network?  It is being entirely shut down.  Very few sites are being repurposed for the Sprint network.

I think he may mean "how many of the 39k sites will eventually have 800?"

To which I think the answer is "as long as you're not in IBEZ, you'll see 800. Also, some urban sites, being spaced at closer than PCS, will not ALL have 800, though you will see 800 assuming not in IBEZ"

    • Definite usage quirks in hunting down these sites with a rainbow sim in a s24 ultra. Fell into a hole yesterday so sent off to T-Mobile purgatory. Try my various techniques. No Dish. Get within binocular range of former Sprint colocation and can see Dish equipment. Try to manually set network and everybody but no Dish is listed.  Airplane mode, restart, turn on and off sim, still no Dish. Pull upto 200ft from site straight on with antenna.  Still no Dish. Get to manual network hunting again on phone, power off phone for two minutes. Finally see Dish in manual network selection and choose it. Great signal as expected. I still think the 15 minute rule might work but lack patience. (With Sprint years ago, while roaming on AT&T, the phone would check for Sprint about every fifteen minutes. So at highway speed you could get to about the third Sprint site before roaming would end). Using both cellmapper and signalcheck.net maps to hunt down these sites. Cellmapper response is almost immediate these days (was taking weeks many months ago).  Their idea of where a site can be is often many miles apart. Of course not the same dataset. Also different ideas as how to label a site, but sector details can match with enough data (mimo makes this hard with its many sectors). Dish was using county spacing in a flat suburban area, but is now denser in a hilly richer suburban area.  Likely density of customers makes no difference as a poorer urban area with likely more Dish customers still has country spacing of sites.
    • Mike if you need more Dish data, I have been hunting down sites in western Columbus.  So far just n70 and n71 reporting although I CA all three.
    • Good catch! I meant 115932/119932. Edited my original post I've noticed the same thing lately and have just assumed that they're skipping it now because they're finally able to deploy mmWave small cells.
