Here's one of my local towers. I've always thought that the top rack was just iDEN, but was just recently told that CDMA is on this tower as well.     I believe that the lower setup is Clear's WiMa

Either some birds have taken roost between those antennas or that tower is in need of a Brazilian wax.   AJ

Saw some guys working on the lower section of this tower near my house in Corpus Christi, TX. As far as I know, Corpus is not scheduled for NV until 2013 so I'm figuring they're working on the backhaul.

My local tower...gotta love living in urban areas, basically located on top of someone's house. There is a dedicated ladder cage installed on the side of the house to allow access, and the base stations are fenced off.

That's a good question, and I think Clearwire also did an install there as well, I get awesome WiMAX coverage.

I don't see the microwave. Do you see it on the opposite side of the building?

 

I'll take a better look tomorrow morning, but I think that was the only logical location, I don't see any other sites other than a tower down the block, I'll snap a picture tomorrow, we can see who's it is :)

Why don't you check Clear Coverage Map? It should show the tower locations in your area.

It does show the tower on the same location as the Sprint tower, interesting. I'm assuming fiber backhaul for all! :)

I wouldn't allow microwave to be pointed at my house. There may even be standards/protocols that prevent that. Clear does have some non microwave sites in some locations. But I was told in the past that Clearwire has 90%+ MW backhaul on WiMax sites. AAV makes a lot of sense in a home location. It probably was already served by some high speed alternative ISP.

The tower you posted doesn't have Network Vision on it yet if that's a tower Sprint has equipment on. The base stations on the ground look like Sprint's but the antennas on top look much different than any Sprint antennas in our area. There are for sure no RRU's for Sprint there but the lower platform does have RRU's and a microwave dish, maybe Clearwire?

Yes the lower level is probably clearwire. This tower was supposed to be the first to get upgraded in Austin 3 weeks ago but obviously this has yet to happen.

I just noticed I caught a southwest jet on approach in that shot. Looks like its going to get stuck in all that bushy stuff! The techs are going to have a fun time working around those nests when they put up the new panels.

It Looks like a hawks nest of some sort. That's gonna be a pain in the arse if their there. Hawks or any birds of prey are protected so the techs are at the mercy of those who have to move it.

Different gain or manufacturer is my guess. There's three different sizes one for each heading. Good catch, I was distracted by giant birds and tiny aircraft!

ewww that sounds not so smart....I would think that they wouldn't do it more than once like this...setting them up in a series is way too risky imho. If one in the middle or near the beginning goes down for whatever reason, then the rest of the towers down the line are SOL...Also how do they regulate the bandwidth to each tower if in a series like that? Would make it seem that first tower in the line gets the priority and all...

 

You wouldn't think that is too smart, but all the carriers do it. At VZW I had sites that were a chain of 4 or 5 if memory serves. When those paths went down it was a problem. Especially when one of the sites was up on Mt. Taylor. Winter, not so much fun.

      Definite usage quirks in hunting down these sites with a rainbow sim in a s24 ultra. Fell into a hole yesterday so sent off to T-Mobile purgatory. Try my various techniques. No Dish. Get within binocular range of former Sprint colocation and can see Dish equipment. Try to manually set network and everybody but no Dish is listed.  Airplane mode, restart, turn on and off sim, still no Dish. Pull upto 200ft from site straight on with antenna.  Still no Dish. Get to manual network hunting again on phone, power off phone for two minutes. Finally see Dish in manual network selection and choose it. Great signal as expected. I still think the 15 minute rule might work but lack patience. (With Sprint years ago, while roaming on AT&T, the phone would check for Sprint about every fifteen minutes. So at highway speed you could get to about the third Sprint site before roaming would end). Using both cellmapper and signalcheck.net maps to hunt down these sites. Cellmapper response is almost immediate these days (was taking weeks many months ago).  Their idea of where a site can be is often many miles apart. Of course not the same dataset. Also different ideas as how to label a site, but sector details can match with enough data (mimo makes this hard with its many sectors). Dish was using county spacing in a flat suburban area, but is now denser in a hilly richer suburban area.  Likely density of customers makes no difference as a poorer urban area with likely more Dish customers still has country spacing of sites.

      Mike if you need more Dish data, I have been hunting down sites in western Columbus.  So far just n70 and n71 reporting although I CA all three.

      Good catch! I meant 115932/119932. Edited my original post I've noticed the same thing lately and have just assumed that they're skipping it now because they're finally able to deploy mmWave small cells.
