Network Vision/LTE - Minnesota Market

Well, it's been a while.

Anything new going on around you guys in Minnesota? I live in Willmar and I haven't seen anything change. Still only have LTE downtown, and nowhere outside of town. There is 1 tower left (right across the lake from me) that needs the LTE upgrade.

Anyways, how are things going elsewhere?

Forest Lake here. LTE is on most sites, with a few exceptions. I tend to lose signal in between sites, which I'm hoping will be fixed with band 26. I drive to Duluth a lot and its the same story along 35, with lost connection between towers. I'm hoping there will be work done this summer in Duluth. So far I've been pretty happy with the network up in this part of the market and haven't had many issues.

Forest Lake is part of the first areas in Minnesota to get band 26!  Hopefully your phone can connect soon!

I actually called sprint yesterday to get a status update and they told me that band 26 was completed. I didn't believe them so its great to hear it twice! just waiting on the spark update for my N5...once I connect I'll test it out and be sure to post it here!

Hey soupcan, fellow forest laker here. I can't connect my N5 to b26 either. Gotta wait for the up date. Some of the area around here is done. Become a premier sponsor to see the map.

Minnesota
Status:  Partial LTE Launched/NV Upgrades Continuing
NV Sites Accepted = 83%
LTE Sites Accepted = 60%

Hopefully once NV hits 100% more LTE towers go live and then we get Spark and we all get Spark phones and everything is just fine.

Some Band 26 & Band 41 sites are already accepted in parts of MN.

They have nothing but trouble in the Alexandria area. Very frustrating to have trouble and get no answer. All the little towns around have LTE so I know it's close but I am jealous. Hurry spring so they can get it done. :-)

They have decent WiMAX there though. When I was there to buy my car, I was very happy with the consistency of the speed/signal strength.

  • 2 weeks later...

I work in the Southeastern side of Mpls and live just a bit further Southeast than that close to the RIverview, and am still experiencing the same problems as before, but now with a timeline info from a care rep for whatever it is worth. I hate to be so pessimistic but this seems par for the course with them, just keep pushing out the date a few months again and again.

Thank you for the post and for providing your location information. I found that the main towers servicing both your home and work areas are scheduled for 4GLTE implementation over the next 90 days. Once complete you will experience a full 4GLTE experience at those locations. Charles G. Sprint Social Care Team

I live in downtown Minneapolis but travel around the metro a bit.  Beginning last summer signal and dropped calls are bad, but over the last couple months my phone is almost unusable.  I have the galaxy s4 with root and stock(ish)v06 rom baseband L720VPUFNAE.

I can't ever get a call and not have it drop.  Lots of times I get wierd beeps when I make a call before it starts ringing.  Lots of times during a call I get a dialtone noise.  Lots of times calling a number that has prompts for '1' or '2' for this or that, it does not recognize when I hit a number.  If I try calling a bunch of times then eventually it works.  4G LTE comes in sometimes and sometimes is very good, but when in transition between 4g and 3g I get no data lots of times, and lots of times no data with 3g signal.  My wife has iphone 4s and doesn't seem to have many problems.  Is it the 4g phones or mine in particular?  I'm ready to bail and go with Verizon, I feel like I'm paying for a plan when all I really have is a good wifi smallish tablet.

Can anyone offer insight?  Is there something in particular with my phone?   I can go back to stock if needed.  I'll pay premium or whatever if that gets me more info.

Thanks

The towers downtown haven't been fully upgraded. Things should get better soon. Sprint has been upgrading towers at an accelerated pace recently. The tones and beeps have been reported in other threads.

While updates in Minneapolis are not complete, this sounds awfully bad. You might want to consider backing up your phone and resetting it to factory and seeing if that improves things. It is possible that you have a lemon, and not just issues with the network. There is a difference between your phone and you wife's iPhone, her phone isn't triband.

    • Definite usage quirks in hunting down these sites with a rainbow sim in a s24 ultra. Fell into a hole yesterday so sent off to T-Mobile purgatory. Try my various techniques. No Dish. Get within binocular range of former Sprint colocation and can see Dish equipment. Try to manually set network and everybody but no Dish is listed.  Airplane mode, restart, turn on and off sim, still no Dish. Pull upto 200ft from site straight on with antenna.  Still no Dish. Get to manual network hunting again on phone, power off phone for two minutes. Finally see Dish in manual network selection and choose it. Great signal as expected. I still think the 15 minute rule might work but lack patience. (With Sprint years ago, while roaming on AT&T, the phone would check for Sprint about every fifteen minutes. So at highway speed you could get to about the third Sprint site before roaming would end). Using both cellmapper and signalcheck.net maps to hunt down these sites. Cellmapper response is almost immediate these days (was taking weeks many months ago).  Their idea of where a site can be is often many miles apart. Of course not the same dataset. Also different ideas as how to label a site, but sector details can match with enough data (mimo makes this hard with its many sectors). Dish was using county spacing in a flat suburban area, but is now denser in a hilly richer suburban area.  Likely density of customers makes no difference as a poorer urban area with likely more Dish customers still has country spacing of sites.
    • Mike if you need more Dish data, I have been hunting down sites in western Columbus.  So far just n70 and n71 reporting although I CA all three.
    • Good catch! I meant 115932/119932. Edited my original post I've noticed the same thing lately and have just assumed that they're skipping it now because they're finally able to deploy mmWave small cells.
