Carriers and Stealth Price Hikes.

LTE does not necessarily make it more feasible, LTE makes it even more complex.

LTE is not going to replace GSM/HSPDA/CDMA/ETC, all these existing technologies will remain for voice on existing and new devices for the foreseeable future. VOLTE won't be available globally or even necessarily in the same footprints for a long time, so relying on a strictly LTE only device to provide single global device won't happen any time soon.

I don't disagree, that a global/world phone would change things, but until that global/world phone becomes the lowest common denominator, it won't make much a difference regarding non-subsidized plans or being able to pick and choose a different carrier with a single phone on a whim.

It is a little off topic, but if phone manufacturers started making modular phones, where we could keep a device and swap out the baseband/modem/etc to accomodate different telephony technologies without switching up devices, that would be a step towards a global phone. IE a device that does not necessarily support every carrier at the same time, but that can swap the necessary components for a different carrier as easy as changing a sim or battery.
