Update: Sprint has announced that due to supply issues, they will not have S4 units available at stores on Saturday. No date given as to when the retail channels are expected to be stocked. They did announce that they expect to begin taking web and phone orders on Saturday but were vauge as to when those orders might ship.

Sprint GS4 will have removable sims.

On the back the SGS4 starts to look a lot different from the SGS3. The flash is now below the camera module, and the camera port and black region is now correspondingly much larger, with a bit of a pronounced bump. There's no Sprint branding on this particular variant, just Samsung at the top and Galaxy S 4 (no IV, no Roman numerals, it's 4 this time) at the bottom. At bottom left is a cutout and small raised bump for the speakerphone.

Samsung continues to differentiate its phones by including a removable back cover, and underneath it, removable battery, microSD expansion, and microSIM card tray. I'll admit that I instantly popped in my SanDisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-1 64 GB card when I got the SGS4 just because I can.

I am not sure this is a big deal until Sprint actually starts selling SIM Only plans of some sort.

It is a big deal for international use as well as the possibility of unlocking for domestic. Some Verizon phones for example work quite well on att.

I hope the delay isn't too bad with the gs4, I am anxious to get my hands on one.

Its an enormous deal for those of us who spend time in europe, asia and south america.

Hmmmm... about that... you may want to check out the other thread I started... It looks like Sprint intentionally (and inexplicably) disabled UMTS 850 in the device. This could cause degraded performance of the device all over Central and South America (and Australia, Thailand, Israel, the Phillipines and other places). Right now, no idea why they did this.

Guys, themuffinman started the Galaxy S4 user thread a few days ago, but no one seems to be using it. Let us shift most discussion over there now, since the phone has been released. I will likely be moving some of the recent posts from this preview thread to the user thread, then potentially closing this thread in the near future.

We do not need continuing Galaxy S4 info fragmented across two different threads. So, this thread will be closed sooner or later. Why is that a problem?

    • Definite usage quirks in hunting down these sites with a rainbow sim in a s24 ultra. Fell into a hole yesterday so sent off to T-Mobile purgatory. Try my various techniques. No Dish. Get within binocular range of former Sprint colocation and can see Dish equipment. Try to manually set network and everybody but no Dish is listed.  Airplane mode, restart, turn on and off sim, still no Dish. Pull upto 200ft from site straight on with antenna.  Still no Dish. Get to manual network hunting again on phone, power off phone for two minutes. Finally see Dish in manual network selection and choose it. Great signal as expected. I still think the 15 minute rule might work but lack patience. (With Sprint years ago, while roaming on AT&T, the phone would check for Sprint about every fifteen minutes. So at highway speed you could get to about the third Sprint site before roaming would end). Using both cellmapper and signalcheck.net maps to hunt down these sites. Cellmapper response is almost immediate these days (was taking weeks many months ago).  Their idea of where a site can be is often many miles apart. Of course not the same dataset. Also different ideas as how to label a site, but sector details can match with enough data (mimo makes this hard with its many sectors). Dish was using county spacing in a flat suburban area, but is now denser in a hilly richer suburban area.  Likely density of customers makes no difference as a poorer urban area with likely more Dish customers still has country spacing of sites.
    • Mike if you need more Dish data, I have been hunting down sites in western Columbus.  So far just n70 and n71 reporting although I CA all three.
    • Good catch! I meant 115932/119932. Edited my original post I've noticed the same thing lately and have just assumed that they're skipping it now because they're finally able to deploy mmWave small cells.
