Sprint Airave

Recommended Posts

Yes, I did.

So what did they recommend doing to get it to work? Based on everything you've said, it should be working. The only other thing I could think of is your cable speed. What is the download and upload speeds do you get?

Edit: Did some research on your cable company and it appears they offer SLOW upload speeds that might be the reason your Airave isn't working properly. So as I mentioned before, we'll need to know what your cable internet plan is.

The Airave needs at least a 1.8+Mbps for the upload to work. Based on Suddenlink's internet plans, only the 30Mbps plan or the 50Mbps plan barely meet the requirement needed. If you have the 3Mbps or 15Mbps plan, those won't work since their upload speeds are 768kbps and 1.5Mbps respectively. As for the 30Mbps plan, it barely meets the Airave's requirements with a 2.0Mbps upload speed and still could cause issues if other's are using the connection for uploads, etc. The 50Mbps plan has a upload rate of 3.0Mbps.

Yikes.

1.8 megabits upload? Not sure where you get that number. I have used it on a 384kilobit line before. The device actually only uses about 80k or so per phone call.

Sprint can run a whole site off 1 T1 with just 1x or 2 Ts for evdo sites.

I have even used one on satellite before, it was used for texting only though. The line is not the problem.

Where city is this device located in?

It's in the book that comes with the v2.5 Airave. It says it needs 350Kbps (DL/UL) for calls and 3Mbps DL/1.8 Mbps UL for the data side.

Notice it says up to on the data side if you want to experience the max EVDO data speeds. it will function with just about any US cable / dsl packages just fine. besides, that would not affect simply getting the unit registered. i have a friend using his on a 768 kbps DSL connection just fine.

My friend uses an Airave 2.5 on a 3MB down/684kbps up on his Windstream DSL line with pings in 300ms range and has no problems. His 3G data is limited to 600k up, but otherwise no issues.

Right I understand that there are others who can get their's working properly with their slower connections, but Samanthabrynn lives in an area where there is no Sprint coverage at all at her place. So her being out a few miles from signal could also mean that her cable connection could be also right on the edge or furthest from her place... and/or she lives in an area where there are also other cable internet subscribers and they are all using it for their needs.

@Samanthabrynn: Maybe run a speed test (http://speedtest.net) and report back what your results are.

I doubt the speeds are the issue.

And the airave wishes it could bust 3/1.8 out on evdo. Fastest I can get with perfect signal is about 700 to 800 up and 2500 down if I am lucky. But I don't use it for data, that's what wifi is for.

Based on what everyone else says, it "should" work. I'd go ahead and follow the advice of 'jegillis' and double check that the IMEI #'s match to the T (since people are human and make mistakes), get the unit reprovisioned once everything is reverified, and finally if all else fails, demand a new unit.

I'm just getting up to speed on the whole thread. Some really good advice given. I have nothing to add, really.

But I love how the one Sprint CSR says you have to have a Sprint signal in order to use an Airave. That's rich! Painful ignorance. Of course no Sprint signal is needed for an Airave, that's the point of it! :hah:

Although I do wonder if there is an issue with the GPS. I remember reading about something similar once where the last light would not turn green. The customer was finally able to get ahold of an Airave specialist who was able to determine the GPS kept locking onto the same coordinates in Kazakhstan or some place. They deemed the unit was faulty, sent a new one and never had any further issue.

Getting ahold of a Sprint employee who handles Airaves day in and day out is your only hope, it appears. They will be able to tell what the issue is or determine a faulty unit.

I want to add if it hasn't been talked about is on the Airave unit there is a MAC address that the Airave CS will ask to make sure they have the correct #s of the unit with what is on file if that should be the problem that is making it not work there. I use mine here with a 50MBps down 5MBps up so that should work very well but again I don't use it for data like Digiblur says that is what WiFi is for.

We did verify the MAC last night the be re provisioned for me. It 'should' work. He thinks the GPS signals aren't strong enough. Honestly I'm stumped.

Do you have lots of tall trees or buildings blocking the GPS signal? Can you get a GPS signal normally on your phone from home?

Again, I would just demand a new unit at this point if CS has double checked everything on their side.

That thing picks up GPS so well that if you have the antenna plugged in properly on the unit it should work fine. Try putting the antenna outside the window if you can in case you have efficiency windows.

I have mine in the middle of the house and it has no problem picking up GPS through the ceiling, insulation, attic, then the roof.

I bet the unit is bad.

Ok good that you checked out the MAC address on there. Like Digiblur had said by putting the GPS antenna outside that is what I did here. I have the Airave on the 2nd floor and run the cable outside the window and up to the peak of the 2nd story roof but I don't have tall trees near by.

If you tried everything then I would demand everyday til they get sick & tired and send you a new unit and when then do make sure the MAC address and GPS are good and report back here if you get it working there for you.

I happen to be running my airave with Clear Wimax which airave team said wont work because of latency but it works just fine even with UL speeds of only 1Mb at best. Like everyone says call Sprint and have them send you a new unit.

I looked at my router bandwidth of my airave when in a call yesterday and the unit only uploads and downloads at 6 kilobytes a second with one active call. Just like with voip it is very minimal, all it requires is low jitter and somewhat decent ping time.

I'm sure you will see my post in the NO thread. The ping and jitter seem to change it little outside of adding a lot of delay. I use mine on a 1/192 connection. It is more like a .3/192 connection. The pings at night are around 300 ms. During the day they range from 1000-2000 ms. The jitter can be anywhere from 100-300 ms. The connection is very unstable to say the least and it works decently. The delay is annoying but I have learned to deal with it. The ISP is Frontier...pretty much tells the story.
