HTC EVO LTE is not the only phone where you have to toggle to get 4G

My daughter has an Iphone 5 and lives in Lawrence KS, where Sprint has LTE service. She called the other day and said her phone was only connecting 3G. Using my experience with the HTC EVO LTE and its connection issues, I told her to toggle the airplane mode. Eureka, it immediately connected to 4G. Seems like the connection algorithm is not perfect on the Iphone 5 either.

Thanks for the report. I've had to do this for years to get 3G on many devices. Sometimes I just would get hung on 1x. I cycle through airplane mode and it forces an EVDO scan. No biggie. I've had to do it at least once on every device I've had. And some were worse than others. Like the OG EVO, GS2 and GNex. I imagine it will be the same for LTE occasionally even when things are going well.

If someone needs to force scan for LTE, cycling airplane mode is the best way to go.

It won't switch to LTE during an active data session. My iPhone will attempt to connect to LTE randomly, even with a horrible signal. And when I'm on WiFi, it's even worse. It tries to connect to a -120dBm LTE signal. And fails. But with a good signal, it never fails to connect.

I wonder if the HTC scense is causeing the problem with 4G. I know sometimes I will turn on airplane mode and it take about 1 minute before it will shut off 3G. When I see this it tells me something is going on behind the scenes. So I wonder if by chance the phone has an internal data connection or something.

I'm not sure what you're getting at. But it seems all my devices of the past year or so take a long time to get into airplane mode after selection. Not just the EVO. Also the GS3, Note2, Viper, Photon Q the GNex. The last device I had that went into airplane mode quickly was the GS2.

My Galaxy S 3 only takes about 7 seconds to enter or leave Airplane mode. I am not sure what my older phones took, but I do not consider 7 seconds to be poor. I do also see it lock onto LTE fairly quickly sometimes even in weak areas. Occasionally it does lag when finding LTE, but it is much much better at finding LTE than the HTC 4G LTE phone. I did have the HTC 4G LTE phone until it aggravated me and forced me to return it within my 14 day window. I traded it for the the Galaxy S3.

I would say on average it's 7-10 seconds for me. It feels like forever though. Seems like turning off the radios could be a much quicker endeavor. On the GS2, it was only a second or two.

I have had a few occasions where it has taken 30 seconds to a minute. Annoying.

It takes no more then a second on my iPhone. Shouldn't be that hard... I've found that Androids take a while to connect to WiFi as well.

  • 2 weeks later...

Can someone that has a EVO LTE tell me what exactly has to be done to get it to connect to LTE? Is it just one toggle of the airplane mode? multiple toggles? is it the switching back and forth between LTE/CDMA and CDMA only? I'm curious based on the number of sites in my area that appear to be complete. I wonder if I'm doing something wrong.

If you are in an area with a strong enough signal, you should only have to toggle once. Just turn on airplane mode, count to 4, turn off airplane mode. If your LTE signal is worse than -110 RSRP, sometimes it may take more than one to connect or not at all.

This guy claims he was about to write a complaint article about how his EVO had horrible 3G service and he said suddenly the 4G icon popped up. In less than a second. WHAT?!?!?!?!

    • Since this is kind of the general chat thread, I have to share this humorous story (at least it is to me): Since around February/March of this year, my S22U has been an absolute pain to charge. USB-C cables would immediately fall out and it progressively got worse and worse until it often took me a number of minutes to get the angle of the cable juuuussst right to get charging to occur at all (not exaggerating). The connection was so weak that even walking heavily could cause the cable to disconnect. I tried cleaning out the port with a stable, a paperclip, etc. Some dust/lint/dirt came out but the connection didn't improve one bit. Needless to say, this was a MONSTER headache and had me hating this phone. I just didn't have the finances right now for a replacement.  Which brings us to the night before last. I am angry as hell because I had spent five minutes trying to get this phone to charge and failed. I am looking in the port and I notice it doesn't look right. The walls look rough and, using a staple, the back and walls feel REALLY rough and very hard. I get some lint/dust out with the staple and it improves charging in the sense I can get it to charge but it doesn't remove any of the hard stuff. It's late and it's charging, so that's enough for now. I decide it's time to see if that hard stuff is part of the connector or not. More aggressive methods are needed! I work in a biochem lab and we have a lot of different sizes of disposable needles available. So, yesterday morning, while in the lab I grab a few different sizes of needles between 26AWG and 31 AWG. When I got home, I got to work and start probing the connector with the 26 AWG and 31 AWG needle. The stuff feels extremely hard, almost like it was part of the connector, but a bit does break off. Under examination of the bit, it's almost sandy with dust/lint embedded in it. It's not part of the connector but instead some sort of rock-hard crap! That's when I remember that I had done some rock hounding at the end of last year and in January. This involved lots of digging in very sandy/dusty soils; soils which bare more than a passing resemblance to the crap in the connector. We have our answer, this debris is basically compacted/cemented rock dust. Over time, moisture in the area combined with the compression from inserting the USB-C connector had turned it into cement. I start going nuts chiseling away at it with the 26 AWG needle. After about 5-10 minutes of constant chiseling and scraping with the 26AWG and 31AWG needles, I see the first signs of metal at the back of the connector. So it is metal around the outsides! Another 5 minutes of work and I have scraped away pretty much all of the crap in the connector. A few finishing passes with the 31AWG needle, a blast of compressed air, and it is time to see if this helped any. I plug my regular USB-C cable and holy crap it clicks into place; it hasn't done that since February! I pick up the phone and the cable has actually latched! The connector works pretty much like it did over a year ago, it's almost like having a brand new phone!
    • That's odd, they are usually almost lock step with TMO. I forgot to mention this also includes the September Security Update.
    • 417.55 MB September security update just downloaded here for S24+ unlocked   Edit:  after Sept security update install, checked and found a 13MB GP System update as well.  Still showing August 1st there however.
    • T-Mobile is selling the rest of the 3.45GHz spectrum to Columbia Capital.
    • Still nothing for my AT&T and Visible phones.
