Everything 800mhz (1xA, LTE, coverage, timeline, etc)

Just to add some new info to the fire, Sprint has (or at least had, Sunday morning) at least some 1X active on channel 526 in Newborn, Ga, east of Atlanta, although you'll need a custom PRL to use it.

Thanks for the report. This confirms our examinations of internal Sprint documents last Spring that indicated Sprint could not deploy on SMR 476 in SouthernLINC markets, but would deploy on SMR 526 instead.

How many voice carriers are typically being broadcasted in any given market? Any rough guess or generalization will do.

Just to get of perspective on how much one carrier of 1xA 800smr is going to give us with its 4x increase in capacity.

The number of CDMA1X carriers varies a lot from site to site and market to market, so there is no generalization. Furthermore, the CDMA1X Advanced "4x increase in capacity" is a platitude that should not be repeated so often because it does not really hold true.

I apologize, while I'm aware that the capacity increase was a best case scenario, I didn't realize it was more or less untrue. Was just trying to get an idea of how the single voice carrier on smr would hold up.

Thank you though.

No need to apologize. The "best case scenario" for CDMA1X Advanced capacity increases just does not bear out in the real world. It relies upon full implementation of CDMA1X receive diversity and 4GV vocoder. But you will not find full implementation among all Sprint handsets.

My theory, which I put forth about six months ago, is basically this: Sprint should move all postpaid accounts to idle on the one CDMA1X 800 carrier. Outside of stadium environments, it should have enough access/paging channel capacity to support all subs. For traffic channel capacity, though, the network will have to move calls periodically to CDMA1X 1900 carriers as needed and as propagation permits.

As for prepaid and MVNOs, keep those accounts exclusively on the CDMA1X 1900 carriers. They are not paying for 800 MHz.

I love it!

Now will they implement such a theory?

Early returns in Chicagoland and Waco indicate "yes" -- or, at least, "maybe."

I know a guy who knows a guy who's cousin's friend can look at it.

In the bayou, that "guy" would be your grandmother, right?

:P

Cool.. nice to see 2 things. 800SMR and they finally fixed the 3G roaming that has been messed up in with CSpire in one of their SIDs for YEARS. I've even tried to open a ticket on that a while back but I'm sure it fell on deaf ears.

The 25xxx series has had 800smr for quite a while in two SIDs. Later Baltimore was added and now this one.

55xxx does not have a new one yet.

So now SMR is enabled in Chicago, Baltimore and areas of CA?

Close. It was Chicago and DFW. Then Baltimore and now north CA.

Ah, got ya. I'm patiently waiting to see when it gets enabled in Shentel territories as they're quite far along in their build-out.

I have the proper PRL on my phone for 800 SMR and am in Shentel territory, but no signs of it being active yet anywhere I travel. I have seen the phone search for it in a no signal area.(watching the search in DEBUG)

Interesting. If I interpret this correctly, it seems they'll be starting NV upgrades in central valley region and doing CDMA 1xA rollout instead of waiting around. I do know for a fact that nextel decomissioning hit most of the region back in late september through october so it wouldn't be too hard to deploy that when they do NV upgrades.

Well, other than that... yay!! A reference to northern cali at last!

Nvm...

The SF Bay market has CDMA 800 sites going active. This PRL is activating it for SFO. The Central Valley and Nevada CDMA 800 ability is incidental, not because work is underway there.

I actually corrected myself after I reread that a few times, hence I crossed it out. I'll expect nothing and be happy when something happens.. Good to hear the Bay actually have 800 going active. Thought it was mainly out in the east and midwest still. Meh. Those lucky bay folks.

Is it mostly the SF Bay market or are we seeing it in the South Bay too?

    • Since this is kind of the general chat thread, I have to share this humorous story (at least it is to me): Since around February/March of this year, my S22U has been an absolute pain to charge. USB-C cables would immediately fall out and it progressively got worse and worse until it often took me a number of minutes to get the angle of the cable juuuussst right to get charging to occur at all (not exaggerating). The connection was so weak that even walking heavily could cause the cable to disconnect. I tried cleaning out the port with a stable, a paperclip, etc. Some dust/lint/dirt came out but the connection didn't improve one bit. Needless to say, this was a MONSTER headache and had me hating this phone. I just didn't have the finances right now for a replacement.  Which brings us to the night before last. I am angry as hell because I had spent five minutes trying to get this phone to charge and failed. I am looking in the port and I notice it doesn't look right. The walls look rough and, using a staple, the back and walls feel REALLY rough and very hard. I get some lint/dust out with the staple and it improves charging in the sense I can get it to charge but it doesn't remove any of the hard stuff. It's late and it's charging, so that's enough for now. I decide it's time to see if that hard stuff is part of the connector or not. More aggressive methods are needed! I work in a biochem lab and we have a lot of different sizes of disposable needles available. So, yesterday morning, while in the lab I grab a few different sizes of needles between 26AWG and 31 AWG. When I got home, I got to work and start probing the connector with the 26 AWG and 31 AWG needle. The stuff feels extremely hard, almost like it was part of the connector, but a bit does break off. Under examination of the bit, it's almost sandy with dust/lint embedded in it. It's not part of the connector but instead some sort of rock-hard crap! That's when I remember that I had done some rock hounding at the end of last year and in January. This involved lots of digging in very sandy/dusty soils; soils which bare more than a passing resemblance to the crap in the connector. We have our answer, this debris is basically compacted/cemented rock dust. Over time, moisture in the area combined with the compression from inserting the USB-C connector had turned it into cement. I start going nuts chiseling away at it with the 26 AWG needle. After about 5-10 minutes of constant chiseling and scraping with the 26AWG and 31AWG needles, I see the first signs of metal at the back of the connector. So it is metal around the outsides! Another 5 minutes of work and I have scraped away pretty much all of the crap in the connector. A few finishing passes with the 31AWG needle, a blast of compressed air, and it is time to see if this helped any. I plug my regular USB-C cable and holy crap it clicks into place; it hasn't done that since February! I pick up the phone and the cable has actually latched! The connector works pretty much like it did over a year ago, it's almost like having a brand new phone!
    • That's odd, they are usually almost lock step with TMO. I forgot to mention this also includes the September Security Update.
    • 417.55 MB September security update just downloaded here for S24+ unlocked   Edit:  after Sept security update install, checked and found a 13MB GP System update as well.  Still showing August 1st there however.
    • T-Mobile is selling the rest of the 3.45GHz spectrum to Columbia Capital.
    • Still nothing for my AT&T and Visible phones.
