Mnemon
For what it's worth, I'm getting great WiMax speeds in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago.

DaQue
Am I missing an easy way to get speedtest to do a snapshot? 125 ms/ 6.74Mbps/1.04Mbps tonight on the EVO 4G. Life will be bittersweet when I get a Note 2. Using 3G tonight 150ms/.95Mbps/.75Mbps, better than most on 3G.

The used to work on mine, then on one of the updates (maybe Gingerbread), it stopped working. Worth trying as it's free. If it's rooted, ShootMe will definitely work!
Big O
I'm in the Bay area of California and I too have noticed dramatic WiMax improvement recently. At home, WiMax is backup network for my wired service which has it's own set of issues. I'm at the last hop in for coverage in this area and discovered over time that there is a corridor where bandwidth was better (though not stellar) and the further away from this area, bandwidth seemed to drop by half at each tower site. At my location, 80KB down was the norm on a good day. Last week failing over to WiMax, I was seeing speeds ranging between 8 - 10MB down. Other than increased latency on WiMax, the overall experience was similar to my wired service.

SpecialEdVTEC
My WIMAX speeds have been consistently getting better. Additionally, Sprint rolled out an update which included a new connection manager, and I am getting better WIMAX signal coverage than ever. I get WIMAX in places that used to only be 3G. At the lake where I work out, I used to get an extremely weak 4G signal that would just drop or not even be picked up. I get 4G signal now there 80% of the time and the phone jumps onto 3G the other 20%. This has made me happy because I use data for my entire workout. The connection manager has added a 4G usage meter, so maybe Boost hogs have stopped to avoid being throttled. Before this update, there was no way to monitor WIMAX usage and it was basically unlimited, regardless of plan.
Mobilesolutions
My brother has a Photon, Never since he's had the phone has Wimax propagated indoors at my home. However in the last 24 hours it has remained on constantly while in the house, was able to pull 3 mbps down in a central location of the house. 8 mbps on the back patio. I live just over a mile from our southeast protection site.

Ya know...I have to agree with others, I think the reason for the 'up-tick' in WiMax connectivity is the reduction of users due to more users moving to LTE devices.
