Nice, thanks for the info~

 

Wasn't really a fan of the Samsung defualt keyboard..not really big on Swype either.. using Swiftkey on the GS3..way better imo. Wonder what the SMS improvements will be..

 

And I will make full use of the improved LTE connectivity! :P

Unfortunately, at this writing we really don't know what the "improved LTE connectivity" feature really does. And several hours after the Sprint announcement, I haven't seen a peep on any forum by anybody reporting that they have received the OTA yet. Maybe Sprint and Samsung are further tweaking the LTE threshold levels, or maybe this is something else altogether.

 

Not knowing what this new update is supposed to do must be frustrating for any hapless person who had just completed an extensive test of the LTE radio using the prior firmware.

On LG8, I was able to keep LTE right out to the edge of service. Way beyond what the EVO LTE could maintain. However, there was still a good 60-90 second delay for it to catch LTE on its own when coming into known LTE areas. Maybe this has been reduced?

Wow.. This puts the S3 even further ahead of the EVO.

 

Hope they patch the EVO before my area LTE rolls out, otherwise the sprint store is going to see my face a lot. This is one of the main reasons I am keeping my insurance.

I sit on the fringe of LTE to begin with, so we'll see if it helps the connectivity and 4G/3G data dropouts

 

Fixed the i/I problem while typing mid-word

 

Still crashes when attempting to copy

 

Added SNR to the LTE DEBUG screen

Also looks like it turns on the Connection Optimizer....hmmm....prompts EULA and reenables itself as soon as you uncheck....

 

Whenever you go to that screen, it does recheck box to enable the feature by default. But if you uncheck it and leave the screen, I think it stays disabled. This is easy to test at your home WiFi location, which presumably is remembered with your WiFi login credentials, with WiFi disabled on the Notifications bar. When I do that on my phone (and I have installed the LI3 update) my WiFi does not automatically turn on. At least not yet.

Not to change the direction of the conversation, but does anyone have thoughts about the relative cost/benefit ratio of the S3 16Gb/32Gb vs. loading up the microSD side? It appears that for about the same amount of money, I can upgrade both my handsets (which I'm going to do anyway) to an S3 16 Gb w/64 Gb microSD vs. S3 32Gb w/ 16 Gb microSD card. Thoughts, suggestions (as long as it doesn't involve actual Sprint emplyees)? TIA

It depends on what you plan on loading onto your memory. If you are planning on downloading games and apps more than 8GB or so, I would go with the 32gb model. If you are mostly going to use the memory for mp3 and video storage, the 16/64GB combo would be fine.

I have noticed that I prefer internal memory over sd memory a lot. 16GB is still a good amount of memory. After my experiences with the last few phones I have owned, I would not even consider a phone with less than 16GB and would gladly pay for 32+

 

The manufacturers know that internal memory is better than expansion memory, and charge way too much for something that costs them about $1 per GB to buy.

Is the update out for everyone yet? I don't think my wife's new S3 has it just yet.

 

I manually installed the LI3 update. Got tired of waiting.

After you download it, place it on your external SD card. Then power off your device. Hold down the Power + Volume Up + Home button at the same time. It will then boot up into Android System Recovery. Press the Volume Down button until it highlights the "apply update from external storage" and press the Power button to select it. Now scroll down with your Volume down button to highlight the downloaded file. Press the Power button to select the update file once it is highlighted.

 

It will take a couple of minutes to install. And voila!

 

This update should only be applied to non rooted GS3's.

I installed this latest update several days ago, and this week I have been doing a lot of LTE field testing. I'm afraid that some vestige of the old problem remains after all the firmware fixes: Sometimes, after losing an LTE connection and then moving into an area with an LTE signal, the handset will not automatically reacquire 4G status. But toggling the data connection by one of several means might force a renewed 4G LTE connection.

      Definite usage quirks in hunting down these sites with a rainbow sim in a s24 ultra. Fell into a hole yesterday so sent off to T-Mobile purgatory. Try my various techniques. No Dish. Get within binocular range of former Sprint colocation and can see Dish equipment. Try to manually set network and everybody but no Dish is listed.  Airplane mode, restart, turn on and off sim, still no Dish. Pull upto 200ft from site straight on with antenna.  Still no Dish. Get to manual network hunting again on phone, power off phone for two minutes. Finally see Dish in manual network selection and choose it. Great signal as expected. I still think the 15 minute rule might work but lack patience. (With Sprint years ago, while roaming on AT&T, the phone would check for Sprint about every fifteen minutes. So at highway speed you could get to about the third Sprint site before roaming would end). Using both cellmapper and signalcheck.net maps to hunt down these sites. Cellmapper response is almost immediate these days (was taking weeks many months ago).  Their idea of where a site can be is often many miles apart. Of course not the same dataset. Also different ideas as how to label a site, but sector details can match with enough data (mimo makes this hard with its many sectors). Dish was using county spacing in a flat suburban area, but is now denser in a hilly richer suburban area.  Likely density of customers makes no difference as a poorer urban area with likely more Dish customers still has country spacing of sites.

      Mike if you need more Dish data, I have been hunting down sites in western Columbus.  So far just n70 and n71 reporting although I CA all three.

      Good catch! I meant 115932/119932. Edited my original post I've noticed the same thing lately and have just assumed that they're skipping it now because they're finally able to deploy mmWave small cells.
