My Sprint & Evo LTE woes

I'm sad to say that this weekend my Sprint cell coverage and my Evo both decided to fail me at critical moments. As you know the DC area was hit hard with storms on Friday evening and since then my cell coverage at home has been even worse than normal. I have been without electricity since Friday night and with digital landline service that means no phone. My Evo has been almost unusable in the house, frequently dropping calls and breaking up during calls. It's been much worse than normal. The 3G coverage has been equally as bad. I was either losing data connection completely or stuck in 1xRTT all weekend.

On Saturday morning my wife and I decided to go for a drive so we headed north to Delaware and then on to Atlantic City. I figured I would get better coverage on the road but no dice. Data was terrible and my navigation was unusable for large stretches of my trip. While in Atlantic City I needed to find an alternate route around some pretty bad traffic and I could not get any route directions. The GPS radio itself seemed to be working but any route information was unavailable. I would lose data connection completely and often would have to reboot the phone to get it back.

If I had needed my phone in a critical situation I would have been in trouble. I am finally seeing what some other folks may be experiencing with their Sprint service. If my experience was anything like what others are getting on a daily basis I can understand the extreme frustration. I figured that major corridors like I-95 and places like Atlantic City would have good coverage. Not so. I also realized that I will have to go back to a dedicated navigation unit as my phone cannot be counted on.

I'm hoping that this was related to the storms and either the system was overwhelmed with users or that it was NV related. Either way I was extremely disappointed with both my device and Sprint for the first time.

I hear ya brother. My experience with Sprint since March/April this year has gone the same way. The only place I can obtain a 3g speed better than 600kbps is at work. At home or on the road, i'm lucky to hit 200kbps. I've experienced the awful speeds in Phoenix, been connected to 4g in Chicago that maxed out at 1.5mbps all within the past 3 months. I'm finding it extremely tough to not plunk down the hundred or so dollars to get out of my contract now.

I'm sure all carriers dealt with those issues in your area but its especially frustrating when it happens to you.

I hope that you will get power back soon, I know that there is a heat wave settling in and A/C is needed. Take care and stay cool.

It sounds like this was an issue with all carriers and not isolated to Sprint. It was a traumatic event to communications in the whole region.

Everyone was having problems after the storm. It was not only Sprint, although I believe Sprint had it pretty bad.

But I have noticed that speeds and service have been going back to their normal self (bad) but doable.

I'm hoping that it was related to the storm because I was so disappointed in the service. I can't remember the last time that I had a device fail me so consistently like that.

I'm still getting a dedicated navigation unit. I don't want to worry about data connection when I need directions.

That is a good idea. I've considered doing the same.

Pretty sure that JB/maps will not need a data connection for navigation on the next version for the exact reason you cite.

And I was driving thru DC yesterday and had the same problem with data, it varied as I drove thru, likely a lot of towers were without power. Backup's are not on all towers and some if not many are supplied by batteries that may only last about 8 hours. This is true of all carriers and they all are suffering the same problem. No power=No service.

My reaction has tempered somewhat upon realizing that it was most likely storm related. As long as my Evo returns to her usual lovable ways then all will be forgotten. That is, unless I find a way to get some of that GS3 "strange"...

I wish I could attribute my ill fated service to the weather. Mine has been terrible for almost a yr. Thank goodness for wifi yet somewhere along the line Sprint needs to get it in their heads that we're paying for a service we expect to be usable.

    • Since this is kind of the general chat thread, I have to share this humorous story (at least it is to me): Since around February/March of this year, my S22U has been an absolute pain to charge. USB-C cables would immediately fall out and it progressively got worse and worse until it often took me a number of minutes to get the angle of the cable juuuussst right to get charging to occur at all (not exaggerating). The connection was so weak that even walking heavily could cause the cable to disconnect. I tried cleaning out the port with a stable, a paperclip, etc. Some dust/lint/dirt came out but the connection didn't improve one bit. Needless to say, this was a MONSTER headache and had me hating this phone. I just didn't have the finances right now for a replacement.  Which brings us to the night before last. I am angry as hell because I had spent five minutes trying to get this phone to charge and failed. I am looking in the port and I notice it doesn't look right. The walls look rough and, using a staple, the back and walls feel REALLY rough and very hard. I get some lint/dust out with the staple and it improves charging in the sense I can get it to charge but it doesn't remove any of the hard stuff. It's late and it's charging, so that's enough for now. I decide it's time to see if that hard stuff is part of the connector or not. More aggressive methods are needed! I work in a biochem lab and we have a lot of different sizes of disposable needles available. So, yesterday morning, while in the lab I grab a few different sizes of needles between 26AWG and 31 AWG. When I got home, I got to work and start probing the connector with the 26 AWG and 31 AWG needle. The stuff feels extremely hard, almost like it was part of the connector, but a bit does break off. Under examination of the bit, it's almost sandy with dust/lint embedded in it. It's not part of the connector but instead some sort of rock-hard crap! That's when I remember that I had done some rock hounding at the end of last year and in January. This involved lots of digging in very sandy/dusty soils; soils which bare more than a passing resemblance to the crap in the connector. We have our answer, this debris is basically compacted/cemented rock dust. Over time, moisture in the area combined with the compression from inserting the USB-C connector had turned it into cement. I start going nuts chiseling away at it with the 26 AWG needle. After about 5-10 minutes of constant chiseling and scraping with the 26AWG and 31AWG needles, I see the first signs of metal at the back of the connector. So it is metal around the outsides! Another 5 minutes of work and I have scraped away pretty much all of the crap in the connector. A few finishing passes with the 31AWG needle, a blast of compressed air, and it is time to see if this helped any. I plug my regular USB-C cable and holy crap it clicks into place; it hasn't done that since February! I pick up the phone and the cable has actually latched! The connector works pretty much like it did over a year ago, it's almost like having a brand new phone!
    • That's odd, they are usually almost lock step with TMO. I forgot to mention this also includes the September Security Update.
    • 417.55 MB September security update just downloaded here for S24+ unlocked   Edit:  after Sept security update install, checked and found a 13MB GP System update as well.  Still showing August 1st there however.
    • T-Mobile is selling the rest of the 3.45GHz spectrum to Columbia Capital.
    • Still nothing for my AT&T and Visible phones.
