Network Vision/LTE - Las Vegas Market

Recommended Posts

Daughter works at the RIO...Sensorly shows lte up & down I15 but not INSIDE the RIO; I'll be going there next week; upstairs on the second floor I get the strongest Wimax signal INSIDE anywhere I've been in Vegas..so I'll take my SW Tri Fi and MacBook to see how strong LTE is at the same spot; I can't map it (no LTE phone yet) but I can hopefully get some download tests to share; if I get an LTE signal I'll move around in the casino to see how well it penetrates..

The Rio tower hasn't even been worked on and the permit is in jeopardy of being cancelled due to no inspection. It's on Hotel Rio Dr on the south side of Flamingo.

That really seems to be a typical issue with LTE. You need a really strong LTE signal to get it to work indoors.

I had no problem whit my iphone 5 inside Walmart on tropicana and pecos I had lte even deep in side the store

It could be anything from a power outage to someone went and dug and severed a fiber line because they weren't paying attention, to an issue at the switch, or even too many users using that site all at once. The bad thing is in a market that has not been announced if it has to do with LTE, they won't open a trouble ticket. <img src='http://s4gru.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />

Where, then, is the LTE source for all the Sensorly splashes on I15 both north & south? The RIO is but 1 1/2 blocks from I15.. I expected to see SOME LTE inside the RIO

It's possible you will see some LTE upstairs.

Oh..no.. I snag sites up to 9 miles away with ease in some areas. Then in some cases a mile away from the site you have decent LTE signal then go inside and you have no LTE. The farthest I've seen in our market is 14 miles away.

Well then, Digi, how is Sprint LTE broadcast at 1900 MHz going to be any better than Wimax if we can't use it inside of buildings? Years more wait while 700 MHz becomes a reality or does some miracle happen when iDen is shut down in June?

It will work in buildings. Luckily you live in an area with good site spacing so indoor coverage won't be an issue in most places. It just won't work when you are standing outside pulling LTE from 2-3 sites over than the RF design calls for. Just the nature of the beast of using the network pre-launch.

Why anyone would think there is something wrong with LTE when the nearest two sites to you are not active just blows my mind. Have you tried going inside a building near a site? That would be a far better way to measure how it performs indoors than going inside with a weak signal.

I lose my VZW LTE and Tmo HSPA+ when I go inside with a weak to mediocre signal too.

I'll do the testing regardless; my motives were and are good here..I knew the closest LTE broadcasting tower was a ways west on Flamingo; my curiosity was and remains LTE propagation distances as I15 shows pretty good Sensorly tracks by the RIO; I do not for a moment mean to demean or insinuate that ultimate LTE building propagation relates at all to these simple-minded tests ; I live in a place where if I get LTE at all eventually it will have to be from a tower 2-4 miles away over hilly terrain hence my curiousity

Maybe I'm different with having a wifi router for my ISP at home, so I just don't understand why I constantly see people saying they need LTE at home. I need LTE where I work as #1 then #2 where I'm visit and play... I can care less about the house as I'll still use wifi anyways since it is faster.

I need LTE at home since I don't have the luxury of a home ISP since no one wants to provide me service for less than a $5000 installation fee.

I am sure there are some special cases. Had a friend with this same issue. They wanted $9000 to come down the dirt road with 5 houses down it. Ended up building a little cabinet with a roof for the cable modem, fan, and power supply for the ubiquiti m5 loco. Shot the signal down the road to his house about half a mile away. The cable guy was so confused on installing the cable drop in the little box.

My SW Tri-Fi is capped at 3GB so I won't be an abuser of LTE IF I get a decent signal at the house; I mostly stream music with iMatch over Wimax for a few hrs a day using an Apple TV and keep s/w updated on three Mac's , one Win8 laptop, and two QNAP NAS boxes..very little video streaming..so for me having LTE at the house in the 3-7 Mbps range is heaven; that way I can keep my Cox bill in check as they constantly are upping rates for broadband to offset losses to their video subscriptions

I was on the LAVO patio today at the Palazzo and got an LTE signal. Some around the back side of the building too near the Sands Convention Center.

Maybe this recent push was to make sure all the C level execs could use their phones during the CTIA convention this week. Probably not, but once I find the Sprint reps there I'll ask.

Inside the Sands Convention Center, they definitely upgraded the in building coverage. Data actually worked there this time. Back in January/February I'd get signal but couldn't do anything with it.

I connected to LTE on my iPhone 5 for the first time tonight! It was on Boulder Hwy between Sunset & Russel. Here's my best speed that I saw:

post-9651-0-19670100-1369190181_thumb.png

I pulled over in a gas station to try various things on my phone and I was blown away. My phone felt like a totally different device! Youtube videos streamed instantly and without any pausing. In fact the progress bar was so far ahead of the playback mark there is no way it could have ever caught up. The app store loaded instantly including image previews of the app. Netflix started playing instantly too and the quality was every bit as good as on Wifi. I was able to scrub through Netflix videos and see the live preview without any trouble and once I stopped on a new scene it started playing instantly again. On 3G all of these activities bring my phone to it's knees. I've often thought about switching to T-Mobile because of Sprint's "3G". This experience tonight made me sure that sticking with Sprint through this transition is the right move.

Gotta say I'm impressed..went inside the RIO today (as promised) up on the second floor by the burger bar where I get the awesome wimax reception and loe & behold pretty good LTE from a tower that is 1 mile away as the crow flies; rssi level of -92 dbm oscillating up to -100 dbm;  download speeds ob 6-8 mbits and upload speed of 5 mbits FOR a GOOD to WEAK signal as per my SW Tri-fi hotspot; boy did the web pages load fast as in usatoday which typically takes a few seconds just ripped; If i had any doubts about the potential of NV and the Sprint version of 4g LTE they are now gone; i can just imagine the experience when all the towers around Las Vegas/Henderson lite up..wow!!

I was just at the Post office at Jones and Azure and got a real nice 4g signal. I just wish it went a little more east towards Decatur where 3g signal is horrible!

23k down and 8k up! I would upload a screenshot if the lame 500k limit was raised a little on uploads. (no cell camera takes pics that small anymore, FYI)

I got some LTE while driving around with Waze up, so I snapped some screenies.

Very excited for this deployment!

There are other options for posting pictures. Increasing the size of uploads allowed in the forums would certainly increase server costs which is why I am sure it is so low.

Where exactly is this? Are you talking about the extreme East side of town near Sunrise Mountain?

Pretty much. There are like 5 different "views" here. I go down hollywood going southbound. Til it curves left. Youll end up reaching sort of a park/pic nic place and thats where i got my lte signal. On maps it says "Sunrise Trailhead"

I'm getting decent LTE signal and speeds in some parts of the Luxor. I'm poolside now with a drink and enjoying the connectivity.
