Network Vision/LTE - Chicago Market

I was just on 59 at portillos didn't even check for 4g cause I'm sick switching to airplane mode all day on my evo. It makes trying to map wth sensorly a pain I'm the ass. I got my evo posted on Craigslist right now!

I've not gotten it in that area either. I would not panic on the EVO yet, From what I've seen so far, if I'm in a LTE area with a strong signal, the switch is pretty quick. It only seems to lag when the signal is questionable. It seems the phone can't decide which way to go. If the system gets filled in as good as Robert and others have implied, I'm sure this will be a moot issue.

I used the EVO LTE in Waco, which has the densest LTE deployment yet in the country and it still struggled to keep a connection in fully deployed areas. And that is after the latest OTA. Maybe a future one will fix it. But I'm starting to get pessimistic.

Really now?

West burbs'. :wall:

But yes' date=' I'm jealous of the other burbs too! Waiting for the Winfield / Wheaton cluster to fill in is extremely frustrating.[/quote']

Its awful. There is a HUUUGE square of dead 4G space in Sensorly....lol awful!

That's not good news.

Sent from my LTE loving (if I road trip) Evo 4G LTE...

Is this just an Evo LTE problem or do other phones show the same coverage issues? If so I could see a real capacity issue with LTE 800 as devices connect to it while indoors.

I tested four Sprint LTE devices at the same time in Waco. The LTE connectivity issues were related solely to the EVO.

Hi Robert,

Could I ask what the other 3 devices were?

HTC EVO LTE, Samsung Galaxy S-III, Galaxy Nexus and LG Viper. We have articles about our performance testing that will be posting soon.

Can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not... But yeah, a lot of the sensorly data is incorrect because 4G gets turned on and off.

Not sarcastic. I work at the corner of Geneva and Schmale. I don't even think that NV upgrades have been completed in that area.

Ok guys wondering if some one here can provide me with a little insight. I have some images of 3 towers close to my area and wanted to know if you guys could tell if they are LTE ready by looking at them. Not terriblly sure how to post these pics but I'll try.

Also I got an LTE signal south of Chicago today!!!! Between 111-115 and Cicero. Had to Cycle from Cdma/Cdma W LTE.

Any idea when where we can find updated 4g coverage maps (Robert)? Maybe impose a sensorly map over the current 4g sightings? - Anywho here are the sites I got pics of. CH03XC0189 , CH03XC177, CH73XC029. C177 is a cluster of towers so I took single images of each one and a group pic. I'm sure the detail heavy super tech guys in here will be able to pick the sprint tower out of this cluster.

The bottom two towers you posted look like they're NV updated. I can't tell on the first one, too blurry.

You want to look for that little control box attached to the panel, that indicates an NV upgrade.

This looks like an AT&T LTE tower.

Could be. Usually the NV towers only have 3 panels, each one covering 120 degrees but I'm only familiar with the towers by me and I'm sure it's different in different markets?

Here's a tower near me.

The Sprint panel is circled in red, and you can see the old supporting frame that used to hold legacy panels which have now been removed (on each side of the middle panel). The NV panel is just a single dark gray panel with the control box attached to the left, and the single panel covers a 120 degree arc, so only 3 are needed on the tower when previously there were 6 or more.

Oh man im like in the process of getting a new LTE phone today or tomorrow. Do you think you could just quickly post the overall results. Like the best phone to hold an LTE signal is X, followed by Y, then Z.

According to the sprint coverage map of 4G LTE I'm supposed to have coverage at my house. However this morning no 4G. Why is that. In deerfield some area i have it but my house nothing.

Answered this earlier...

Was your city officially launched? I thought Waukegan was the only official launch city. I checked the Sprint maps and they show a lot more coverage than I think they really have. I was up near the Chain of Lakes this past weekend and didn't see any LTE anywhere around any of the lakes, including Fox Lake which according to Sprint has LTE.

This!

I was out in the far west burbs this weekend and was mapping LTE with Sensorly but I had to keep cycling through airplane mode on my Evo to get it to pick up LTE where I knew there was LTE! What a PITA and major disappointment! I hope there's an update for the Evo soon to correct this.

I live out in the west burbs and have increasingly been running into LTE without cycling through airplane mode to see it. I have usually been within a mile of each tower that I get LTE connectivity so signal strength\distance may be why you have to switch between airplane mode so much. Considering I used to get squat not too long ago I feel that great progress has been made out here.

    • Since this is kind of the general chat thread, I have to share this humorous story (at least it is to me): Since around February/March of this year, my S22U has been an absolute pain to charge. USB-C cables would immediately fall out and it progressively got worse and worse until it often took me a number of minutes to get the angle of the cable juuuussst right to get charging to occur at all (not exaggerating). The connection was so weak that even walking heavily could cause the cable to disconnect. I tried cleaning out the port with a stable, a paperclip, etc. Some dust/lint/dirt came out but the connection didn't improve one bit. Needless to say, this was a MONSTER headache and had me hating this phone. I just didn't have the finances right now for a replacement.  Which brings us to the night before last. I am angry as hell because I had spent five minutes trying to get this phone to charge and failed. I am looking in the port and I notice it doesn't look right. The walls look rough and, using a staple, the back and walls feel REALLY rough and very hard. I get some lint/dust out with the staple and it improves charging in the sense I can get it to charge but it doesn't remove any of the hard stuff. It's late and it's charging, so that's enough for now. I decide it's time to see if that hard stuff is part of the connector or not. More aggressive methods are needed! I work in a biochem lab and we have a lot of different sizes of disposable needles available. So, yesterday morning, while in the lab I grab a few different sizes of needles between 26AWG and 31 AWG. When I got home, I got to work and start probing the connector with the 26 AWG and 31 AWG needle. The stuff feels extremely hard, almost like it was part of the connector, but a bit does break off. Under examination of the bit, it's almost sandy with dust/lint embedded in it. It's not part of the connector but instead some sort of rock-hard crap! That's when I remember that I had done some rock hounding at the end of last year and in January. This involved lots of digging in very sandy/dusty soils; soils which bare more than a passing resemblance to the crap in the connector. We have our answer, this debris is basically compacted/cemented rock dust. Over time, moisture in the area combined with the compression from inserting the USB-C connector had turned it into cement. I start going nuts chiseling away at it with the 26 AWG needle. After about 5-10 minutes of constant chiseling and scraping with the 26AWG and 31AWG needles, I see the first signs of metal at the back of the connector. So it is metal around the outsides! Another 5 minutes of work and I have scraped away pretty much all of the crap in the connector. A few finishing passes with the 31AWG needle, a blast of compressed air, and it is time to see if this helped any. I plug my regular USB-C cable and holy crap it clicks into place; it hasn't done that since February! I pick up the phone and the cable has actually latched! The connector works pretty much like it did over a year ago, it's almost like having a brand new phone!
    • That's odd, they are usually almost lock step with TMO. I forgot to mention this also includes the September Security Update.
    • 417.55 MB September security update just downloaded here for S24+ unlocked   Edit:  after Sept security update install, checked and found a 13MB GP System update as well.  Still showing August 1st there however.
    • T-Mobile is selling the rest of the 3.45GHz spectrum to Columbia Capital.
    • Still nothing for my AT&T and Visible phones.
