Epic 4G Touch radios Possibly support LTE

Recommended Posts

On Verizon CDMA/LTE devices, they are still activated like CDMA, but the LTE SIM card must be inserted. I had an LTE data card for a few months, and it was activated the same way a Verizon 3G card was. And LTE is based off GSM technology in a way, so as far as I know, it will require a SIM card for use.

I'll just be happy when CDMA is finally gone. See the "Galaxy Nexus isn't supported anymore" debacle of a excrement storm over nothing as a reason why. The more I learn, the more I want open standards. Not necessarily "open source", mind you, but common platforms like Android. There's a good chance my next phone will be Android for this reason. I like iOS, and I love my iPad; I just don't want my eggs all in one OS basket.

Do you know if these new devices will be able to access both Wimax and LTE simultaneously? Or will it be only one or the other, i.e. buy device with Wimax support, upgrade to LTE later but lose access to Wimax?

Sprint has said in the past they will not be using the dual WiMax/LTE chips in smartphones because of battery life issues. They will only use them in USB devices and MiFis.

Smartphones will be CDMA/LTE. So you will lose access to WiMax when you get a LTE device on Sprint. I suppose you could get a cheap WiMax hot spot to run though on the side.

I assumed "sofware defined radio" meant a single physical radio that can do either Wimax or LTE depending on programming. I thought this was different from "dual Wimax/LTE chips" which I assume have separate physical Wimax and LTE radios. Guess I don't understand the technology.

It doesn't appear that the first release of Sprint LTE devices will have software defined radios. :(

It doesn't look like any devices in the next 12 months will be set up that way.

Clear has cheap WiMax for $34.99/ month right now. That is just plain 4G. Cheapest way to have 4G once people start switching to CDMA/LTE only phones.

    • Definite usage quirks in hunting down these sites with a rainbow sim in a s24 ultra. Fell into a hole yesterday so sent off to T-Mobile purgatory. Try my various techniques. No Dish. Get within binocular range of former Sprint colocation and can see Dish equipment. Try to manually set network and everybody but no Dish is listed.  Airplane mode, restart, turn on and off sim, still no Dish. Pull upto 200ft from site straight on with antenna.  Still no Dish. Get to manual network hunting again on phone, power off phone for two minutes. Finally see Dish in manual network selection and choose it. Great signal as expected. I still think the 15 minute rule might work but lack patience. (With Sprint years ago, while roaming on AT&T, the phone would check for Sprint about every fifteen minutes. So at highway speed you could get to about the third Sprint site before roaming would end). Using both cellmapper and signalcheck.net maps to hunt down these sites. Cellmapper response is almost immediate these days (was taking weeks many months ago).  Their idea of where a site can be is often many miles apart. Of course not the same dataset. Also different ideas as how to label a site, but sector details can match with enough data (mimo makes this hard with its many sectors). Dish was using county spacing in a flat suburban area, but is now denser in a hilly richer suburban area.  Likely density of customers makes no difference as a poorer urban area with likely more Dish customers still has country spacing of sites.
    • Mike if you need more Dish data, I have been hunting down sites in western Columbus.  So far just n70 and n71 reporting although I CA all three.
    • Good catch! I meant 115932/119932. Edited my original post I've noticed the same thing lately and have just assumed that they're skipping it now because they're finally able to deploy mmWave small cells.
