Sprint 4G Rollout Updates

In the latest news from Sprint, they have added another 36 additional communities that they anticipate having at least a prelaunch amount of service available to use by its LTE customers in the "coming months." We were not able to confirm any dates for these cities with any of our sources this morning, but I would imagine there will be a usable amount of service in these areas by the end of March. Most of these markets will not be a surprise to S4GRU members, with the exception of the Louisiana market. As this is a new market that we have never announced.

In this announcement, Sprint did not identify that these communities will be in a prelaunch stage. However, this will be the case. We here at S4GRU appreciate that Sprint is opening up LTE sites to be used as soon as they are complete. Even though it creates a patchy and non cohesive LTE network over cities that they have prelaunch service, I for one, enjoy being able to use LTE when and where it is available.

Most markets will take a long time from prelaunch phase until they have ubiquitous coverage over the whole area. A few months to a year, depending on the market size and deployment rate. See the city list below and their corresponding markets:

  • Abbeville, LA (Louisiana market)
  • Beaumont/Port Arthur, TX (Louisiana market)
  • Blytheville, AR (Arkansas market)
  • Brainerd, MN (Minnesota market)
  • Bridgeport/Stamford/Norwalk, CT (Southern Connecticut market)
  • Brownsville/Harlingen, TX (South Texas market)
  • Crowley, LA (Louisiana market)
  • Dalton, GA (Nashville market)
  • Duluth, MN (Minnesota market)
  • Dunn, NC (Raleigh/Durham market)
  • Durham/Chapel Hill, NC (Raleigh/Durham market)
  • Eau Claire, WI (Minnesota market)
  • Greenwood, SC (South Carolina market)
  • La Crosse, WI (Minnesota market)
  • Jackson, TN (Memphis market)

  • Lawton, OK (Oklahoma market)
  • Little Rock/North Little Rock/Conway, AR (Arkansas market)
  • Mankato/North Mankato, MN (Minnesota market)
  • Muskogee, OK (Oklahoma market)
  • New Haven/Milford, CT (Southern Connecticut market)
  • New Iberia, LA (Louisiana market)
  • North Wilkesboro, NC (Charlotte market)
  • Oklahoma City, OK (Oklahoma market)
  • Palm Coast, FL (Orlando market)

EDIT: There seems to be a lot of confusion out there, especially among Facebook readers, that cities have been removed from Sprint's LTE deployment list. THIS IS NOT THE CASE! The list above are "additional" cities being added to the list. Sprint has now announced approximately 150 cities total where work is under way. No cities have been removed. In fact, Sprint will start work in every market in 2013. Sprint is deploying LTE nationwide as a part of its Network Vision upgrades.

Customers enjoy blazing speeds of Sprint 4G LTE; in the coming months, nearly 150 more markets, including 36 announced today, will enjoy 4G LTE

Customers in more than 70 markets coast-to-coast are beginning to enjoy the improved coverage, call quality and data speeds of improved 3G

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (BUSINESS WIRE), December 19, 2012 - This year Sprint (NYSE: S) has made a significant investment in its wireless network to better meet the needs of its wireless customers. From the rollout of 4G LTE to the upgrade of thousands of 3G sites across the country to thousands of voice and data capacity additions, Sprint has focused resources and funds to improve its overall network quality and performance. Sprint has hit a deployment stride and is making measurable progress on its goal to bring Network Vision to customers nationwide.

Sprint has launched 4G LTE in 49 markets – including Dallas, Houston, Atlanta and Baltimore – and sites are on-air and implementation is under way in hundreds more. In fact, Sprint has announced nearly 150 markets that should see an official LTE launch in the coming months, including 36 markets that have been added today.* Sprint also has implemented 3G service improvements in more than 70 markets, from Asheville, N.C., to Philadelphia and from Hudson, N.Y., to Santa Barbara, Calif.

Through Network Vision, voice quality is enhanced and Sprint customers in upgraded areas are seeing better performance on their smartphones, mobile broadband connection cards and mobile hotspots when using the Sprint 4G LTE and 3G networks. Customers can expect to experience the following performance improvements:

  • Faster data speeds that enable instant Web access for news updates, HD viewing and game-playing, quicker video downloads and clear video chats.
  • Better signal strength when making a call or using the Web.
  • Fewer dropped calls for peace of mind when talking to friends, family or colleagues.
  • Improved voice quality and less static or background noise when making phone calls.

“With the network investments we made in 2012 and as the only national wireless carrier to offer truly unlimited 4G LTE data plans, we continue to offer better value than our competitors,” said Bob Azzi, senior vice president-Network, Sprint. “But our commitment to an exceptional wireless experience doesn’t stop there. We are an aggressive path to complete the rollout of Network Vision, and we expect to accelerate this momentum in 2013.”

Sprint introduced its all-new 4G LTE network in July 2012 and now offers service in 49 marketsi. Does ANYONE know if anything will ever start in Arizona? Tucson ???

this says everywhere in 2013, so does that mean that every town will have upgrades starting in January?

You? You must be confused. We are not Sprint. Please stop with these comments. They are not productive and show you do not understand the complexities of the Network Vision deployment. There are three OEMs and dozens of regional subcontractors handling the deployment. They cannot pull off a regional subcontractor in Puerto Rico or Oklahoma to work on your market. It doesn't work that way.

Northern New Jersey?

Northern New Jersey work has started. AlcaLu has completed the 3G portion of NV upgrades at 5 sites in the N NJ market to date. More coming every week. However, it will likely still be up to 60 days before LTE will start going live at any of these sites.

The Tucson/Yuma market is supposed start this Winter. We have not seen any more specific dates than this at this time.

Has there been any recent 3G upgrades in Roseville,mi I always have to use wifi because its just slow for anything but at my moms in Westland,mi it's way faster

We are still waiting for anything official out of Michigan, but they are definitely behind schedule in this market. We have had anecdotal reports from members who have seen recent activity at some Sprint sites, though.

Getting tired of waiting for LTE to start in Hawaii.... May need to leave for greener pastures until Sprint gets its act together....

Get its act together? Because they cannot deploy LTE in all markets at once, they do not have their act together? At S4GRU, we do not allow comments like these to go unresponded to. We are not Engadget.

There has to be a deployment order. And Sprint is planning to be largely done by the end of 2013, including Hawaii. And until they get to Hawaii in a few months, at least there is a WiMax network to use.

If Sprint doesn't meet your needs, that is fine. You have to do what is the best for your circumstances. But the mere fact that Sprint has not started in Hawaii yet does not signal failure. Sprint was the first to deploy 4G in Hawaii, and it will not be the last to deploy LTE.

Dang! I was hoping to see something for Omaha,NE. Hopefully it gets announced for my area early next year. Do you have any info on the Omaha market? I'm getting really sick of the slow 3G.

A question for you Robert. They are currently deploying LTE in Nashville but I cannot figure out the pattern of the deployment. I see areas that are going live now that are very not heavily populated outside of Nashville. But Nashville proper (which looked promising to be covered quickly at the start at the deployment) has seen the progress slow dramatically. Can you offer some commentary on the thought process of the deployment? How towers are selected to be upgraded next, etc...?

You should start seeing activity in 2-3 months, God willing. :)

There is no pattern to deployment. They have subcontractors chomping at the bit, ready to go. They jump on the very next site ready, no matter where it is. Before they can begin upgrading a site, the site has to have backhaul complete and ready, equipment delivered and permits obtained. The second everything is ready at a site, the subcontractors are dispatched to start work...no matter where in the market it is.

It's better to keep those guys working than to make them wait for a more choice site to come open. Also, permit requirements are much less in rural areas (if at all). Sometimes this also attributes to more rural locations getting upgraded first.

And Bakersfield, CA is still waiting...only got one tower active from Clearwire and nothing else for several year

The Lower Central Valley market will not begin until some time in 2013.

Is there any more news about LTE starting in Louisville, KY?

No. Work is likely under way. Just waiting for confirmation.

I seem to remember that they origonally stated LTE network conversion by end of 2013 in all markets. Sprint has been building and hitting their targets no reason to suggest they wont hit this.

Robert, I live in Davie, Florida zip code is 33328. It is a city on the outskirts of Fort Lauderdale. Basically it is South Florida. I was in a mall yesterday and missed a bunch of calls, they did not even register as a missed call. My brother called me this morning and said he called me like 10 times. My wife sent me picture messages that I never received. Do you know or have any information when the Davie 33328 area will be recieving LTE coverage for Sprint? I love Sprint, I think the customer service is awsome. The coverage lately is not so good and I am not even receiving calls or messages? This phone is also my business phone so missing calls is not an acceptable response to a client. Any information from you would be appreciated.

The area is an active Network Vision/LTE deployment area. This is probably contributing to the problems. They should be temporary. I would call Sprint and complain. They will be able to give you some info about what is going on specifically in your area and probably compensate you for your trouble on your bill. The silver lining in this is after the problems go away, you will be left with a far superior network than you've had.
