Sprint 4G Rollout Updates

Tuesday, July 31, 2012 - 7:35 AM MDT

The final market in our Network Vision/LTE deployment schedule update series is...Fort Wayne/South Bend. This market has yet to be announced by Sprint, and may not be announced until as late as this Fall.

The Sprint Ft. Wayne/South Bend market covers most of Northern Indiana, except for the NW corner which is in the Chicago market. This includes Fort Wayne, South Bend, Mishawaka, Elkhart, Goshen, Marion, Logansport, Warsaw and Plymouth. Sprint's Network Vision OEM Samsung is scheduled to begin mobilizing their subcontractors around the market in November. The first completed Network Vision sites are scheduled to start coming online before the end of that month.

Anticipated Sites Complete at Market Launch. According to the Network Vision schedules that S4GRU has reviewed, if Sprint launched the market in February, these are the anticipated sites that would likely have LTE complete at that time. This would provide fairly good LTE coverage over many parts of the market.

Schedule details and the bottom line

Sprint has not yet selected a date to formally "launch" LTE service in Northern Indiana. It is difficult to try to pick a date now this far out, but we have attempted to do that. In looking at the schedule as of today, it would indicate a February market launch (going on a 40% - 50% completion for launch). But there is no way to know if Samsung and their subcontractors will actually hit their schedule dates before deployment in this market begins. We will be able to gauge better after a few months of production is achieved.

Samsung needs to hit a production rate of approximately 25 sites per month to stay on schedule. This is a below normal production rate when compared to other markets. They shouldn't have any schedule issues with the appropriate amount of resources allocated.

S4GRU has examined the schedule in great detail in this market and sees that most of the sites will be complete by April 2013. However, there may be a few sporadic sites that will linger past the completion.

Finally Robert is back!

So if this is the last market for the deployment update schedule, what do you have on deck for us next?

I am working on the radio performance article of all the top Sprint devices. I am considering a LTE field trip to Texas or Kansas. Also, we have a series of 800MHz articles we have been planning for a long time.

It would be interesting to see if any sites get added here as most of this is a former affiliate market. I can vouch that iDEN coverage is MUCH greater in the area than CDMA. I understand this has a lot to do with 800 MHz vs. 1900 MHz but as you can see cell site density isn't that great in some areas, most of the time the sites aren't even in the populated areas or along the state highways. I basically don't even try to use my phone when I'm in N. Indiana. Which is a lot.

Why does this market have an anticipated completion date of April 2013 meanwhile the Riverside/San Bernardinardo is scheduled to start in the same month, but won't complete until October 2013? I'm not complaining or anything since I do live in the Ft. Wayne/South Bend market. Sadly however, my town isn't scheduled to have LTE by the anticipated launch date for this market. Thankfully, its only a two month wait from the launch date that this market is scheduled to complete.

Riverside/San Bernardino has 555 sites, Ft. Wayne/South Bend has 191 sites. More sites, more time to deploy.

Another question: Will LTE be available on every cell tower in this market? To be specific, will it ever be available in Wabash?

Virtually all sites. Over 99.9%. And most of the sites that won't have LTE deployed on it will have LTE coverage from a nearby site. I just went and looked at the schedule, and Wabash does have two Sprint sites slated to get LTE.

In our Sponsors sections of our sites, we show maps of all the Sprint Network Vision/LTE Sites. And our Premier Sponsors have access to schedule maps. For more information about how to Sponsor S4GRU, you can go to this link: http://s4gru.com/ind...come-a-sponsor/

How far can the LTE towers' signal reach? I'm talking about those small ones. Not the ones that stretch a couple hundred feet into the sky.

It is so highly variable based on tower height and panel downtilt. However in a place like Wabash, the sites there will likely reach 3-4 miles with LTE. It may be farther if one of them is a Boomer.

How many sites in Fort Wayne are slated to get 4G LTE? And how many in the Fremont/Angola area?

All of them. About 27 around Ft. Wayne and 5 around Angola/Fremont.

Yes. But it doesn't appear to be one of the first sites. But it should be complete before the market wraps up.
