Sprint 4G Rollout Updates

Wednesday, July 11, 2012 - 12:00 PM MDT

The next market in our Network Vision/LTE deployment schedule update series is...West Washington. The West Washington market has yet to be announced by Sprint, and may not be announced until as late as this Fall.

The Sprint West Washington market encompasses most of the Western Half of Washington State. This includes Seattle, Tacoma, Bellevue, Redmond, Kirkland, Everett, Kent, Renton, Federal Way, Puyallup, Issaquah, Bremerton, Olympia, Bellingham and Aberdeen/Hoquiam. Sprint's Network Vision OEM Samsung is scheduled to begin mobilizing their subcontractors around the market in October. The first completed Network Vision sites are scheduled to start coming online in November.

Anticipated Sites Complete at Market Launch. According to the Network Vision schedules that S4GRU has reviewed, if Sprint launched the market in May, these are the anticipated sites that would likely have LTE complete at that time. This would provide fairly good LTE coverage over many parts of the market.

Schedule details and the bottom line

Sprint has not yet selected a date to formally "launch" LTE service in West Washington. It is difficult to try to pick a date now this far out, but we have attempted to do that. In looking at the schedule as of today, it would indicate a May market launch (going on a 40% - 50% completion for launch). But there is no way to know if Samsung and their subcontractors will actually hit their schedule dates before deployment in this market begins. We will be able to gauge better after a few months of production is achieved.

Samsung needs to hit a production rate of approximately 55 sites per month to stay on schedule. This is a normal production rate when compared to other markets. They shouldn't have any schedule issues with the appropriate amount of resources allocated.

S4GRU has examined the schedule in great detail in this market and sees that most of the sites will be complete by September 2013. However, there may be a few sporadic sites that will linger past the completion.

I have an Evo 3D so, no LTE, does anyone in Burien have LTE AND Sensorly that could check if any LTE has appeared in Burien? ...OR has anyone heard anything about LTE rollout in Burien?

By the way, great inside info on situation where information seems to be only strategically released (and not always frankly).

While on the phone with Sprint yesterday I asked the representative about LTE in may area. He said they are ahead of schedule and looking at a early summer launch instead of late summer. Of the towers within a five mile radius of my home in Port Orchard he said there was one tower scheduled to be complete on Feb 9th and 4 others in June. I just ordered a Galaxy Note 2 so it should be here by the 9th to see if they really do flip the switch on that one tower. I may have to drive around a bit to figure out which tower it is. There is a tower that has been down a few times recently that shows "in progress" on the NV map. I'm guessing that will be one of the first ones in my area with LTE.

Drove by the 4G tower in North Kent yesterday and confirmed it is live. Got 3.6 Mbps down, 7.6 Mbps up (although the app used east coast servers to test, so probably should have been quicker)

Thanks for checking that Kent tower forkwieldingmonkey. Looks like some new ones have been upgraded in Redmond. I always take my dogs to Marymoor so I'll confirm LTE this weekend.

Just tested the LTE at Marymoor. I was on the edge of coverage (1-3 bars and would lose LTE completely walking around) so I have a good range of decent/worst case performance. I'll just post the list of speed tests.

Finally!!! My Evo LTE pulled a 4G signal near the Seatac airport while waiting at the cell phone parking lot. Got around 2Mbps down and 2 up. This must have been from Burien tower which is a bit on the far side from there, and much, much better than the 100-700kbps 3G speeds that I usually get - so the speeds don't seem too bad. Looking forward to seeing more coverage in the region!

Noticed the 4G indicator show up on my phone today in Port Orchard. Did a speed test and was getting 14Mbps down and 7Mbps up. Awesome!

LTE at my house in West Bremerton. 4.8 Mbps down, 1.4 Mbps up. I've also seen LTE at the Kitsap Way exit from Hwy 3.

I have strong LTE near my house in Spanaway WA. 23.98 mbps down and 8.34 mbps up. Looking good keep it up Sprint. They've really been busting the LTE out here in WA.

LTE in WA especially the southern part of the state is coming along pretty good. I can't wait untill the NV deployment is completed. LTE is getting closer and closer to my house. Basically almost anywhere I go now (running errands etc) I get a decent LTE signal.

So apparently they are trying to test them some because last night I randomly turned off my wifi at home to refresh my connection when I just so happened to notice that my connection stated 4g! Which doesn't make any sense because I usually only get 1-3 bars max at my house. I'm in hawks prairy of Lacey,Wa

So I ran a speed test cause I honestly couldn't believe my eyes

An LTE tower lit up in the South Lake Union area:

Speeds have been... less than encouraging, though.  The best I've been able to muster so far was about 3.6Mbit up, 2.1 Mbit down.  The speeds jump around a lot, the signal is a bit weak, and most speed tests are well under 1Mbit to Seattle servers which can easily do 100Mbit+ speed tests.  Bandwidth isn't everything, and the latency is generally good - about 60-90ms - but it's really not looking great for Seattle proper so far.

It's good to see that several places have gotten LTE. The highest speed I got was 30 Mbps in Kirkland. That was great! If I can get around 4 to 5 Mbps, I'll be happy.

I wish I'll be able to use LTE in Bellevue before my 2 year contract is up (in a few months) on my LTE phone. I plan to I switch to a carrier that has 1Mbps+ speeds around here when my Sprint contract runs out.

It's disappointing to see that LTE still isn't available in most of Seattle and the Eastside after an year and a half of getting an LTE phone. And I thought last year that September 2013 seemed so far away!

I hear a lot of talk about Band 41 TDD-LTE. Does anyone know if this is live in the Seattle area? Or more specifically Kitsap county which has quite a bit of Wimax coverage. Is there a map or is that in the Premier Sponsor area?

With Seattle being the IBEZ I feel like we are being left out of all the 800mhz Band 26 goodness.

I work in Redmond at RTC and I get no LTE and most of the time I'm roaming. I have an un-rooted EVO 4G LTE.

What gives? Anyone know when one of the most tech driven areas of the nation will get full Sprint LTE?
