Sprint 4G Rollout Updates

Tuesday, July 10, 2012 - 7:30 AM MDT

The next market in our Network Vision/LTE deployment schedule update series is...Minnesota. The Minnesota market has yet to be announced by Sprint, and may not be announced until as late as this Fall.

The Sprint Minnesota market encompasses most of Minnesota and Western Wisconsin. This includes the Twin Cities (Minneapolis/St. Paul and suburbs), Duluth/Superior, Rochester, St. Cloud, Mankato, Brainerd, Bemidji, Winona, Eau Claire and La Crosse. Sprint's Network Vision OEM Samsung is scheduled to begin mobilizing their subcontractors around the market in late August. The first completed Network Vision sites are scheduled to start coming online in September.

Anticipated Sites Complete at Market Launch. According to the Network Vision schedules that S4GRU has reviewed, if Sprint launched the market in April, these are the anticipated sites that would likely have LTE complete at that time. This would provide fairly good LTE coverage over many parts of the market.

Schedule details and the bottom line

Sprint has not yet selected a date to formally "launch" LTE service in Minnesota. It is difficult to try to pick a date now this far out, but we have attempted to do that. In looking at the schedule as of today, it would indicate a April market launch (going on a 40% - 50% completion for launch). But there is no way to know if Samsung and their subcontractors will actually hit their schedule dates before deployment in this market begins. We will be able to gauge better after a few months of production is achieved.

Samsung needs to hit a production rate of approximately 65 sites per month to stay on schedule. This is a big chunk to complete monthly, but is doable with the appropriate amount of resources allocated.

S4GRU has examined the schedule in great detail in this market and sees that most of the sites will be complete by September 2013. However, there may be a few sporadic sites that will linger past the completion.

I get the impression a lot of work is going on on getting the equipment and instrastructure installed prior to cutover.

I work in I.T. and generally when we are working on a server cutover we keep the old equipment running (but not live) alongside the new when we are configuring the new equipment but not yet ready to cut over 100%.

I take it this is what's happening here.

Just curious if anyone has foundJust wondering if anyone can report an active LTE connection at all in Minnesota? The network has suppposedly been started this month. I have not gotten LTE anywhere in the twin cities area. Thanks!

There is no active Sprint LTE yet in Minnesota. But this should change in the next few weeks.

So Robert question for you... I have noticed that when I am driving from Blaine (North of Minneapolis about 20 miles) into downtown Minneapolis I will lose 3g all together and have to turn on airplane mode to get it to kick back on. Is that because of the upgrade going on or something wrong with my phone? I flashed a few different ROM's and it still is happening.

Thanks as always

This has occurred to some people in Network Vision markets. It may be related. However, it could be a network issue or something with your device or ROM. It's really hard to say, unless you can get other people to recreate the issue in the same place as you.

Any idea if the city of Northfield will have 4G coverage? It's hard to tell on the map shown. We currently use Virgin Mobile and the coverage isn't all that great. Will Sprints 4G network be available to its VM customers? Thanks for any info you can provide. Was tossing around the idea of getting a family plan through Sprint but only if coverage is going to improve here.

My brother told me after calling and speaing to a sprint rep that 4g lte was begining to be turned on in the twin cities area??? Can this be confirmed? Also my 3g is being dropped and turned back on time to time like the gentleman above although I dont need to switch from airplane mode to get it back it just seems liek its going off and on periodically??? Any insight?

Thanks!

I live in Eden Prairie and just noticed about 15 minutes ago when I quit using my home wifi that I am getting a sprint 4G LTE signal! Took a speed test and was getting 6.5 mbps download and 5.4 mbps upload speeds.

Looks like Sprint has started turning LTE on in the Twin Cities. Not bad since I just bought my Galaxy S3 on black Friday for $49.

Thanks,

Jeremy

If these sites are nearing completion and/or being worked on how come it was never officially announced by sprint?

Sprint is trying to master the concept of under promise and over deliver. LTE is starting to go live in the Minnesota market and still Sprint says nothing further. It is all a part of their plan.

Northfield will get Sprint 4G LTE coverage. However, as of now Virgin Mobile 4G only runs on 4G WiMax. Sprint stopped expanding WiMax coverage back in 2011 when they switched to LTE for its 4G technology. There will be no additional 4G WiMax coverage added, in Northfield, or anywhere.

Eventually, Virgin Mobile will start adding LTE devices to its lineup. But I have no idea about timing. But if you want to LTE when it starts to go live in Northfield, you will likely need to become a Sprint customer.

Sprint accepted the first eight LTE sites from Samsung last week, and they started to go live this week. It will be a slow steady deployment, with an additional 5-15 sites going live every week all over the Minnesota market.

Picked up a tower south of the cities. Did several speed tests.. as I was driving. This was the best one, but consistent over 10mb/s

Eagan on the other hand does have some LTE goodness right near Lone Oak and 77 near the Home Depot.

Cool, getting closer. Thanks.

Has there been any word yet on La Crosse, WI area getting LTE turned up? It looks like La Crosse is grouped in with the MN market turnup. Thanks

We have had no reports of working starting in La Crosse to date, but it should. Probably within the next 30-45 days at the most.

I know this is probably a silly idea. However, wouldn't it have made more sense to work on northern tier sites in the summer, and save the southern tier states for the winter. I'm really not sure how much can be accomplished in Minnesota from November through March. Sounds like more delays to me.

I work network maintenance for a utility company. We get just as much done in the winter as in the summer. I would actually argue we get more done in the winter. You can dress warm for the winter. But when minimum clothing is a shirt and jeans its hard to stay cool in 95plus temps (all 2 weeks we get them.)

Stioll no 4G for me in Saint Paul. Hopefully they start hitting inner city towers soon...im sitting less than 40feet from one right now as I type this and would hapily help the guys out if they want :)

Not sure about your phone, but the alpha releases of CM10 have data issues on the Note. And a LOT of other roms are based on CM10. The usual fix is toggling airplane mode on and back off, but it isnt a network issue, its the rom. (all based on my experience and reading about the Note, your profile says GS3 so it may be a differnet issue.)

I work in Golden Valley, and have had consistent 4g all day yesterday and (so far) today. I believe this is the tower I'm connected to: http://goo.gl/maps/GsB4Q

According to Sensorly's speed test, I'm getting 2.4Mbps down, 1.11 up, and DNS ping of 135ms.

EDIT: Speedtest.net gives a ping of 116, 3.7Mbps down, 1.5Mbps up.

I got LTE service last night inside Plamor Lanes in LaCrosse. Started to do a speed test getting over 3mbps but it switched part way through to 3g. I was going to step outside and try for a better signal but never did. Promising news!

I have picked up 4G a couple of times now. Once on Friday 1/18 and once this morning 1/21. I ran a speed test on Friday and once this morning and the speed doubled on upload and download today. I picked up this 4G connection driving down Jackson street between West ave and 3rd Street. it was weird because my internet on my phone wasn't working when it read 3G so I did a restart and it connected to 4G when it rebooted. I than ran a speed test and than streamed some music which worked flawlessly until I got downtown and it switched back to 3G.
