Sprint 4G Rollout Updates

Wednesday, April 4, 2012 - 9:45 PM MDT

Earlier today, HTC and Sprint announced the highly anticipated next generation EVO, dubbed as the EVO 4G LTE. Kinda of a long name huh? Well it's not about the name, it's about the device itself. The EVO 4G LTE has a HUGE 4.7" 720p screen with a Super LCD2 display.

Powering this device is ICS covered with SENSE 4.0 with Qualcomm's S4 chip. This device is basically Sprint's version of the ONE X, so it has an impressive 8MP camera that can record up-to 1080p video. Along with those fancy specs, this device will run on Sprint's soon to debut 4G LTE network.

Other specs include a NFC chip, Micro SD Card slot, Beats audio, red kickstand and a 2000mAh battery. This device will also be the first device to feature HD VOICE (I will go into detail in another article). When most devices are announced, release dates and prices are left out. Well, Sprint was so kind/sarcasm to tell us when we can pre-order this monster and how much this will cost us. Preorder for the EVO 4G LTE will begin on May 7th and it'll only cost you $199.99! Pretty reasonable, eh?

So, will you be purchasing this bad boy once it hits Sprint stores? Sound off in the comments. Also, EVERYTHING you need to know about the device is listed in the PR below the photos.

  • HTC EVO 4G LTE is a multimedia powerhouse designed to deliver a high-definition experience at 4G LTE speeds. Features include:
  • Android™ 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich
  • HTC Sense 4.0
  • Beats Audio™
  • 4.7-inch HD display

  • Dual-cameras (8-megapixel rear-facing and 1.3-megapixel front-facing) with instant capture capability
  • Kickstand built into the smartphone’s refined, slim design.

With the launch of HTC EVO 4G LTE, Sprint becomes the first U.S. carrier to announce plans for a nationwide HD Voice network beginning in late 2012 as part of Sprint’s Network Vision program. HD Voice will be deployed on both Sprint's 3G and 4G LTE networks.2

HTC EVO 4G LTE is Sprint’s first device with HTC’s Authentic Sound experience integrating Beats Audio. The technology enables customers to hear music the way the artist intended with unique audio tuning that delivers thundering bass, soaring midrange and crisp highs. HTC EVO 4G LTE incorporates Beats Audio across the entire phone experience, including playing music stored on the device, streaming from a favorite service, watching a movie or YouTube™ video or playing the latest hot game. HTC Sync Manager software also lets users easily get their music on the device from their PC, and it works with whatever they currently are already using, including iTunes®.

HTC EVO 4G LTE makes mobile photography and video easy and intuitive including:

The on-screen photo and video buttons are right next to each other so users don’t have to switch modes - this allows the user to take video and still photos concurrently.

It makes the whole idea of “video mode” or “photo mode” irrelevant. While shooting a video, the user can just tap the shutter button and it captures a still image of that exact moment. Still images can also be captured during play-back of video later.

HTC EVO 4G LTE’s camera has super-fast start-up and auto-focus time. With the fast auto-focus, users can easily stay with a moving object or person, taking numerous pictures just by holding the shutter button.

The biggest complaints I have heard about this Phone are the glossy plastic upper on the back and the non-removable battery. Since the glossy back is removable I am sure someone will come out with an aftermarket piece real soon (they're probably already working on it). For the non-removable battery I would just get one of those little portable recharge packs if I was having problems with battery life. With the bigger battery and the lower drain by just having one processor it shouldn't be a problem for most regular users.

Are there any other lte phones on the market that use a single chipset? Or is HTC really breaking new ground with this? In my house we have a slogan, "4G no batt-ery." Like you already said, hopefully a single chipset helps that reputation.

No, not to my knowledge, at least not on the 3GPP2 (cdma2000) side of things. Some AT&T LTE handsets, however, may utilize only one chipset because a dirty little secret in the 3GPP (GSM) ecosystem is that it does not generally support SVLTE. Absent VoLTE, when a GSM based LTE handset utilizes simultaneous voice and data, it falls back to W-CDMA. This is one reason why AT&T will not go directly to LTE; instead, it has to deploy W-CDMA first, even in rural areas, and that is a highly inefficient, wasteful use of spectrum.

My main concern is the phone's shape. I loved the wideness of the OG EVO 4G but when they went to the EVO 3D, they reduced the width of the phone. I hope the EVO 4G LTE brings back the wider base. But I'm afraid looking at the pictures that this might also have the smaller width.

The original EVO 4G has a 5:3 or 15:9 (1.67:1) aspect ratio screen. The EVO 3D and EVO 4G LTE have 16:9 (1.78:1) screens. So, yes, the EVO 4G LTE will be narrower.

Its a combination of HTC and Qualcomm breaking ground...really more so Qualcomm than anyone else as its their chip...

I'm so glad I waited now. This is my next phone unless Motorola or somebody pulls a rabbit out of its hat.

Motorola will put a 3000 Mah on the Phonton 2 watch and see.

Released specs show the EVO 4G LTE with a width of 2.7". The original EVO 4g has a width of 2.6".

According to briefmobile it looks like Sprint will be using embedded sim cards at least for this phone to access the LTE network. I am still not sure if this is a good thing or bad thing. One thing is for sure its still gonna suck not having the ability to switch even among sprint phones on the fly and of course with other carriers.

I still don't understand the reasoning as to why Sprint likes to do things out of the norm. Lets just hope that the Galaxy Nexus and LG Viper have real sim cards like Verizon and MetroPCS.

It will be proportionally narrower. The screen on this thing is 4.7" 16:9. The OG was 4.3" 5:3. So the phone overall is bigger.
