  1. I love the New York comments there. I don't think I've been in the New York threads here, but I can imagine it's the same.

It got pretty bad month or two ago and mods had to shut it down a few times when they got out of line. It's quiet down nowadays but there's still occasional flairs. On the other websites though.. same old "i hope sprint fails" or "Sprint sucks! They haven't even upgraded my [insert city here] which is so much more important than [insert city here]". Guess t-mobiles getting a little dose of what we see non stop.

  2. Yes, it's really that bad. Sprint's voice coverage has done well for me, but it seems any time I want to utilize data in Tucson or Phoenix I'm *lucky* to see 100kbps. More often than not I can't even do light web browsing on "3g" without a fight.

Example: I forgot to turn wifi on at work and started an update of a 20MB app. An hour later it was at 90% and the phone was quite warm. This kind of event is common enough that it's no longer surprising.

I'm trialing a T-mo phone now. Voice coverage is a bit worse, edge data in the boonies sucks vs sprint's 3g (which is usually decent where backhaul saturation isn't a problem), but 10Mbit downstream in town via hspa+... I'm very torn as to who my GS4 is coming from next week.

Remember this when making your choice. Tucson may have horrible sprint data now, at the end of april 2013, but permits for building applications at sprint sites are starting to pile up and deployment has somewhat began in the market. In the next 3 months, expect massive boosts of progress as every OEM races to begin all their remaining markets and finish those that they began. Tucson will definitely be upgraded. Both inside the city and out in the rural areas and even if it's GMO's, it'll still provide decent 3g speeds if upgraded backhaul is not available.

On the other hand, t-mobile may provide temporary relieve now and possibly LTE in the coming day, their rural areas will still be neglected until at least sometime after 2015 after they're done working on their existing HSPA+ foot print. This means that the 2g edge areas will stay 2g for the duration of your contract whereas Sprint 3g will likely be acquiring new backhaul that'll massively improve speeds.

  3. It will be interesting to see what they do with them. I hear most protection sites use Huawei gear and with Sprint agreeing to replace all Huawei gear with new non-chinese gear, it would make sense to go ahead and install TD-LTE on these sites.

Got to remember that these protection sites have the bare minimum necessities to even keep it running. Backhaul is probably insufficient and the entire cell site will probably need to be replaced. Probably better to keep them up and running till Sprint does network vision in that area and transfer the clearwire site to the network vision one.

  4. Interestingly, Sprint spent $1.7 billion on CapEx last quarter compared to VZW's $1.9x billion.

Given their relative sizes, if that doesn't show Sprint's commitment to their network, I don't know what does.

Ahhh... you finally found your way from Hofo! I agree but it's also not a orange to orange comparison considering that Verizon isn't completely replacing everything at a cell site for their deployment like sprint is. Still, it is nothing to scoff at either considering the amount of money Sprint is making and has compared to verizon with regards to the extent of the work needed to be done.

It'll be interesting to see how much Q2 spending will be with most, if not all, of sprints remaining markets beginning.

  5. For all the iPhone users, do you guys know if the 3G is ever gonna be 4G? Or is it just 3G and LTE? I know when my friends on AT&T turn off LTE it goes to 4G

ATT's "4G" is lies. Their HSPA+ implementation is 14.4mbps and is 3.5g at best (plain HSUPA 5.76mbps is 3g) and they updated the iphone to show "4g" because every android phone coming out was "4g".

It's either 4G LTE or 3g EVDO for sprint and verizon. HSPA+ 14.4 or LTE for ATT and DC-HSPA 42+ or HSPA+21 + LTE for T-mobile.

  6. Where are those sites? I'm in Davis and I would like to see for myself, because I typically get about 80 Kbps

Two are immediatly to the east of Davis near the i80. One way south davis. The three are all physically slightly beyond the edge of Davis city and mainly covers farmland or shot down the highway but does cover tiny parts of Davis proper but it's nothing significant as they are set up for coverage and not capacity.

  8. Sprint GS4 will have removable sims.

    http://www.anandtech.com/show/6914/samsung-galaxy-s-4-review

On the back the SGS4 starts to look a lot different from the SGS3. The flash is now below the camera module, and the camera port and black region is now correspondingly much larger, with a bit of a pronounced bump. There's no Sprint branding on this particular variant, just Samsung at the top and Galaxy S 4 (no IV, no Roman numerals, it's 4 this time) at the bottom. At bottom left is a cutout and small raised bump for the speakerphone.

    SGS4-8042.jpg

Samsung continues to differentiate its phones by including a removable back cover, and underneath it, removable battery, microSD expansion, and microSIM card tray. I'll admit that I instantly popped in my SanDisk Ultra microSDXC UHS-1 64 GB card when I got the SGS4 just because I can.

  9. Visited several of the GMO's around Davis,CA while i was visiting my friends there and did some speed test near these sites. Couldn't get close enough to get physical pictures of the base stations (dirt roads on private property) but can see why Sprint opted to go the easy route with these cell sites compared to the ones inside Davis which are overloaded.

  10. So basically Clearwire has been pretty much chilling knowing that they never intended to make good on their "hot zone" projections, and were waiting to be bought and let Sprint, or whoever bought it do the work? Though realistically Sprint will most likely do a better job rolling out TD-LTE, I wonder if Sprint will gun for Speed vs Capacity.

Clearwire has already been upgrading their existing network for well over a year. Their december report stated that they have 1000 TDD-LTE capable sites ready to be hooked up to Sprints MSC's but not given the order by Sprint to do so yet.

They're doing the slow and steady work because many of clearwires cell site locations may be in redundant locations and could be relocated to Sprints rack instead of their own for cost saving purposes. We'll probably see more info in the coming weeks.

  11. Well Tucson is about 116 kilometers from the border so i hope we don't get screwed over some more. There is no list of areas that fall under this?

Parts of tuscon appear to be within that boundary especially the south and southeast part of the city along the highway. It's very close but cannot be verified since info is missing from that particular area.

  12. What does that mean?

IBEZ - international boundary exclusion zone. Areas which are 100KM from the Mexican or Canadian borders where SMR 800 cannot be deployed pending negotiations for their usage in those areas.

Robert explains it on several posts here..

    http://s4gru.com/index.php?/topic/2445-network-visionlte-orange-county-market-anaheimsanta-anairvinehuntington-beach/page__st__360

International Boundary Exclusion Zone. It's the area along the Mexican and Canadian border where Sprint cannot deploy 800MHz wideband operations until a compromise can be reached and implemented.

Both CDMA and LTE are considered wideband operations. iDEN had very narrow channels and was coveted under the previous compromise that is in place now.

There will not be any IBEZ wideband 800 until 2014 at the earliest.

  13. Thank you for the quick response much appreciated a lot more helpful then sprint customer service

No problem. Keep tabs around here in the next month or so. We're expecting and seeing many new markets undergoing the earliest stages of deployment via applying for permits or having advanced backhaul delivered to cell sites. Should be a huge amount of action in the coming months with all of Samsung , Alcatel-Lucent, and Ericssons remaining markets being deployed.

  14. Hey does any one have any word on when stockton will get 4g lte just got sprint but if it takes to long might just cancel. just need to know when the wait time is any info would help and thank you

Network Vision in UCV has or will begin in the next 30-45 days. First LTE signals should pop up around june and mass deployment across the entire market should be underway by July. Stockton has a little less than two dozen cell sites to upgrade which means only about half of them needs to have upgrades to provide sufficient coverage.

  15. Regardless of pricing, T-Mobile's data network performance is typically much better than Sprint's if you get it, so that may tip the scales in favor of T-Mobile.

Had to add that in. 2g Edge is no better than legacy 3G in many cases and is what T-mobile falls back upon if the area don't have LTE. T-mob LTE is an overlay of their existing HSPA+ footprint. If you don't get T-mobile LTE then you probably won't get HSPA+ which mean you get Edge which is a huge shocker in comparison to Network Vision 3g or unburdened legacy 3g sites in the rural.

  16. Hmm...I was kind of excited with the softbank deal though. Japan's been hitting 2gbit internet speeds so I was thinking softbank could bring asia's technological superiority here XD. But all jokes aside, is the possible dish deployment going to affect what the nationwide LTE rollout? I'm really hoping that we can get a June-August LTE deployment (completion?) because that can start the school year out great for alot of us! By the UCV isn't the only important market they need to be completing, is there any info on when the rest of California and the neighboring states? If sprint can manage to do some LTE completion near the West coast it can really boost sales, especially when the 3rd and 4th quarter are always the biggest ones. Does anyone have word of what's happening now?

Nope. Dish, Charlie Ergen, is just flapping their arms QQ'ing because they haven't gotten their way. The reason is Sprint and Hesse isn't too keen on working with Charlie because of : 1) Dish approached Sprint earlier last year about a possible deal with Sprint deploying Dish's spectrum in return for capacity [abandoned once Softbank came through], Dish then went after Clearwire when it became obvious that Sprint will be buying it, and 3) going after Sprint itself after their efforts at Clearwire got rebuffed. So nothing really will happen until more info is to come.

Sprint has already begun deployment all along the west coast. Samsung has begun NV deployment across oregon and washington with LTE popping up here and there now. SF Bay area has been well underway for more than half a year and has seen steady progress (go to Vacaville..4G LTE, NV 3G , &CDMA 800) while Alcatel-Lucent is humming along in socal and has seen slow but steady progress. The only markets that have not yet begun in CA is the LCV which is slated to begin during the summer.

The upper central valley is probably underway and the first permit for tower work might have been applied earlier this month (still trying to confirm). I'll need to wait till the end of this month to see another building application summary to see if it really is Samsung beginning or not but work has been confirmed and verified to begin all across the market by at at least June-July time frame with physical work hopefully beginning next month.
