I could be wrong but from what I uncovered during my own research I'm pretty sure if it's a state road then state ROW procedure applies so the VDOT approval covers it and the county can't do anything.

Understand your point, but in this situation they were supposed to get local approval as part of VDOT's tentative approval. They did not which continues to show Mobilitie really just doesn't seem like a good partner.

Ahh. So they didn't bother checking in with anybody local. In that case the rage is justified.

You can never contain NIMBY rage. I was just elected to a neighborhood commissioner and I am gearing up to hear their wishes. Pass the zoloft please.  :)

Good luck. You'll need it.  :ninja:

I think it may help to point out that it's either radios on 30ft phone poles or radios on 150ft towers.

I wonder how much spectrum the NewCo will have to divest (if any) also if the merger doesn't go through I don't want Sprint have to pay a fee or give spectrum to T-Mobile

I could see them divesting AWS and concentrating on PCS for mid-band. I also could see them divesting the whole T-Mobile network sans the 700MHz and PCS spectrum wholesale to Dish.

Why in God's name would they do either?

Newco would take the T-Mobile foundation and then do 20x20 AWS and 20x20 PCS first. Then additional capacity with 2.6 GHz beyond that. Better penetration and potential 400 Mbps high end on 256 QAM devices. Then TD-LTE would be an additional speed booster atop that.

No low band divestiture is needed. Maybe some PCS. I'd rather see Divestiture there first given that Newco will have spare capacity there. There's enough capacity to keep CDMA and HSPA running two years on smaller PCS slivers. Then CDMA probably goes away 2020 ish.

Because they will have to divest some of the spectrum. Take your pick. There is a spectrum screen and Newco will be over it. The spectrum screen is 1/3 of the available spectrum in any given market.

Having a 4th competitor ready to go will make the merger more palatable. Also it put some money back in the coffers.

Maybe they could sell excess spectrum to a holding company that will lease it back to them.  Get the value of the excess Spectrum in cash like they did with some of their existing 2.5 spectrum.

Also, maybe the amount of allowable spectrum should be increased.  Increase the allowed amount for all  carriers. They are all going to need it soon especially if they start fixed broadband.

I sent a note to the reporter asking if he knew how to determine where they're located.  Would be nice to go find one of them.

Considering the spectrum screen is 225 MHz... it wouldn't have to be that much.

600 Mhz 12

700 Mhz 12

800 Mhz 18

AWS 40

PCS 60

2.6 GHZ 64

That would leave some headroom in place.

If you want more spectrum in 2.6... divest PCS down to 40.

600 Mhz 12

700 Mhz 12

800 Mhz 18

AWS 40

PCS 40

2.6 GHz 100

Equals 222.

These examples are hypothetical in nature and each market would vary. Chicago and St. Louis, for example, would leave more PCS and 2.6 GHZ given they only have 15x15 AWS at 30 MHz.

Mobilities methods have much to be desired. They've created a long history of these disputes.

More spectrum math in a hypothetical merger with a very not hypothetical market: New York. This time we'll assume 194 Mhz is the cap with no 600 Mhz factored in.

12 Mhz 700

16 Mhz 800

50 Mhz AWS T-Mobile

20 Mhz T-Mobile plus 30 Mhz Sprint

= 128 Mhz before 2.6 is in the mix.

194-128 is 66 Mhz. That's 2 20x20 LTE carriers of FDD, three 20 Mhz carriers of TD-LTE, and a partridge in a pear tree.

With 256 QAM it's 2 x 200 Mbps + 3 x 150 Mhz given TD-LTE category 2. 850 Mbps total.

Now here is how the merger will pan out. There won't be one because t-mobile will do the same thing they did successfully with AT&T and thought the could do with Sprint. To divest of parts of band 41 would be very stupid. Only area you are running LTE-TDD and you do a bone head move of getting rid of it. And good luck with 600 mhz, has never been a great frequency to use.

That would be 14 Mhz 800. Sprint will not give up 2.6GHz. Plus they can sell AWS for a pretty penny. Since 2.6 GHz, except for 60 MHz is leased they can't sell it.

If there was a merger, I'd imagine that the combined company, with so much spectrum holdings, would need to forfeit some licenses.

Sprint already has ~200MHz.  TMobile is ~100MHz.  They will be around 300MHz most places.  Thought would range between 50% and 100% more spectrum then VZW or ATT.

Hey, there is a deal atm for Pixel phones brought to Sprint.  Get $13/mo bill credit for two years.  How long is this promotion?

T-Mobile already has a large AWS deployment in the field. Why let that go? If you can get more bandwidth in certain markets with PCS, then use that. I'm fine with that. Treating 2.6 like it is the Holy Grail? I'm not sure that's the best strategy. AWS/PCS can be the base for urban speeds then 2.6 can be the supercharger on top of that.

As far as selling EBS, Verizon has been interested in the past, why would they not be interested now?

They cannot sell EBS because they are leasing it from educational institutions. They might be able to sublease it.

That literally depends on the entity they are leasing from... some might welcome the change.

Sprint's definitely excited about its AMA with Günther today:

Marcelo tweeted about it.

Günther is on Facebook and he put up a short video on his page as well.

I think these AMA's with Günther represent a real change in tone/approach for the company. It's great to see Sprint connecting and interacting with users for direct questions and feedback about its network technology/plans (and anything else).

I have not seen the lease agreements with the different institutions. They might or might not be able to sublease it. It will also depend on what is the status of owned vs leased spectrum in the spectrum screen.

I believe merger between Sprint and tmobile might happen sooner than people think.  Fcc Wheeler will step down on Jan 20.  After Wheeler steps down, there will be 4 republicans to 1 democrat on Fcc committee.  Very likely, merger will be approved.

This may happen if there isn't an opposition from other companies bidding in for T-Mobile at that point. Possibly this might get Dish involved as they were during the merger negotiations between Sprint and Softbank. Seeing as a merger between Sprint and T-Mobile would make Verizon #3, which Verizon would hate, I can see Verizon trying to make an offer for Sprint, which would make a difficult decision for Masayoshi Son, either try to buy T-Mobile and achieve his vision or sell to recoup his investment on Sprint with extra benefits.

Of course, my hope would be for this potential merger between Softbank/Sprint and T-Mobile to bring AT&T back into the mix, as it would make the easiest network transition and give AT&T customers a very awesome network experience with spectrum to match Sprint's. I believe it is better for Sprint to invest the money on tower density, instead on a merger. Sprint easily could become the best carrier, if only for that. My proposal is for AT&T to get T-Mobile, which as I mentioned increases ts spectrum to match Sprint, while Verizon ought to try acquiring Dish for extra spectrum to get closer to the combined AT&T/T-Mobile, and Sprint. It would also give Verizon a television service provider to compete with AT&T/Directv. This would leave Sprint more valuable to be bought by a cable provider, unless Softbank decides to purchase a television provider to pair with Sprint.

I thought vzw was around 140 mil customers?

Att ~120

Sprint Tmo would be ~120

If att bought Tmo that would force vzw to try and buy sprint and dish... lol I know u like att and I do as well but geez aren't you on our side?? The consumer??? Att/Directv and vzw as our only choices??

Prepaid prices would be what we pay now for postpaid!!

Yeah, that is what I saw.  Doesn't say how long the promo is.  Also doesn't say if the Pixel has to be on the account for 2yrs to get the full 2yrs worth of credits.

Probably has to be on the account for two years to get that monthly credit. :/

    • Good catch! I meant 115932/119932. Edited my original post I've noticed the same thing lately and have just assumed that they're skipping it now because they're finally able to deploy mmWave small cells.
    • At some point over the weekend, T-Mobile bumped the Omaha metro from 100+40 to 100+90 of n41! That's a pretty large increase from what we had just a few weeks ago when we were sitting at 80+40Mhz. Out of curiosity, tested a site on my way to work and pulled 1.4Gpbs. That's the fastest I've ever gotten on T-Mobile! For those that know Omaha, this was on Dodge street in Midtown so not exactly a quiet area!
    • Did you mean a different site? eNB ID 112039 has been around for years. Streetview even has it with C-band back in 2022 - https://www.google.com/maps/@40.7303042,-73.9610924,3a,24.1y,18.03h,109.66t/data=!3m8!1e1!3m6!1s2ossx06yU56AYOzREdcK-g!2e0!5s20220201T000000!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fpanoid%3D2ossx06yU56AYOzREdcK-g%26cb_client%3Dmaps_sv.share%26w%3D900%26h%3D600%26yaw%3D18.027734930682684%26pitch%3D-19.664180274382204%26thumbfov%3D90!7i16384!8i8192?coh=205410&entry=ttu Meanwhile, Verizon's eNB 84484 in Fort Greene has been updated to include C-band and CBRS, but not mmWave. I've seen this a few times now on updated Verizon sites where it's just the CBRS antenna on its own, not in a shroud and without mmWave. Odd.
    • Drove out into the country today.  Dish stuck to my phone like glue. At least -120 rsrp. Likely only good for phone calls (should have tested.) It then switched to T-Mobile. Getting back on Dish was another issue. I am used to dragging out coverage so I expected a few miles, but had to drive at least 10 miles towards a Dish site. Airplane mode, which worked for Sprint, did nothing. Rebooting did nothing. Finally got it to change over about 2 miles from the site by manually setting the carrier to Dish then it had great reception. Sprint used to have a 15 minute timeout but I did not have the patience today.  Previously I did a speed test on Dish out in the country at the edge of Dish coverage. My speeds were 2g variety. Dish has really overclocked some of these sites. Seen rssp readings in the 50s. Would have called them boomer sites with Sprint but much  more common with Dish.
