PRL Update while Roaming - iPhone 5

iPhone 5 running iOS 7.1.2. Carrier "Sprint 16" and PRL 51101.

In the past I have been able to use the method of replacing carrier.prl in the sprint_lte_us carrier bundle folder, use the PRL push flag in carrier.plist, and with a few reboots I could get full time verizon 3g roaming with "prl 00001."

I am now visiting Alaska and am stuck on PRL 51101 with "extended" coverage and  1x data. I have tried every PRL I can find (11114, 11119, 53135, 00001) and I seem not to make any difference. After making the prl changes and after the last reboot I am stuck at no service. When checking phone info it will still say 51101.

I have to restore a backup of the sprint_lte_us carrier bundle folder and then things will work again after a reboot.

Any ideas? WIll the PRL update only work if there is native Sprint service around to start with?

When things are working with 51101 @ 1x speeds on "extended" I can do the ##update# and it say success.

Any help appreciated, would just like 3g data while traveling.

We cannot condone the use of the Verizon PRL's. However, custom PRL support may not work right with 7.1.2 like it did with older versions of iOS 7, so that may be your issue.

Like Josh said, we do not condone the use of Verizon PRL's. The "No Service" problem you are seeing is because you probably haven't installed the CommCenter (a part of iOS that allows you to freely modify your carrier bundle) patch for iOS 7. Without having that patch installed, any modification you do to your carrier bundle will result in "No Service" after a reboot and will not go away until you restore the device.

You say that, but doesn't the premiere sponsor prl thread contain prls that allow evdo roaming on carriers like Verizon?

yes, HOWEVER they were for cdma 1x 800  hunting that just to happened to have evdo roaming in some areas. That prl is very old, and wouldnt use it unless your in a sprint area, unless you want to risk sprint shutting your line down for roaming too much (although may show as native on your phone in some area's since sprint's roaming agreements have changed since then)

I am not advocating the use of the prl just making it clear that it is there. I do understand it is primarily for smr, but there was a clear distinction between the sponsor and premier sponsor prl that the premier prl had extra "perks". Is it no longer S4GRU's policy to allow/condone the use of this prl?

We don't have a problem with people using their roaming allotments via any PRL of their choice. But if they go over the 100MB/300MB data roaming limit (depending on plan) there may be consequences. I personally have no objection if members want to use their 300MB data roaming allowance slow on 1x or slightly less slow on EVDO.

If someone asks us help with a PRL so they can abuse it, or try to get Sprint to let them out of their contract, then we would not assist in that.

That PRL is completely different than what the OP is talking about. The PRL that the OP is talking about will make the device roam on Verizon all the time. The PRL you are talking about will allow a user to roam on Verizon EVDO in certain areas when they do not have native Sprint Coverage where they would otherwise be on Verizon 1x.

Note that the aforementioned sponsor PRL thread is not in a public area.  This thread is in a public area, so it will get indexed by search engines.  And that info could assist those who seek to abuse roaming data for various reasons.

That is why I feel that all PRL modification/swap discussion should be limited to the sponsors area.  Just food for thought...

Since the original poster, juanvaldez, who is visiting Alaska, has stirred up an oil slick of a debate now in this thread, I think that we should change his username to Exxon Valdez.

Excellent point. I don't think I even considered the location of the thread I was commenting in. No PRL modification discussions in public areas. :tu:
