Recent high latencies

My latencies (ping times) have gone through the roof in the last few months. Any ideas? Any of you have this lately?

That is true.

Those are relatively high, but since the throughput is high, I would believe the issue could be at the Core. If the airlink was the cause, the throughput would be down lower too. Is this consistent across several speed test servers? Because I sometimes have this problem with this one server that I like to use most often for AT&T. It will be that way for a week or so, then go back to normal. But other servers will be fine.

This this this. I have download speeds of around 10+ right now but my latency has sucked. Normally above 200 or 300 on my home ISP. My pages load like they're on dial up.

Could it be any issue with the backhaul? I have seen my own internet be fine with download , and upload, but latency is 5x higher than normal.

I suspect that your increased latencies are related to your needlessly massive screenshots that you posted.

Sprint has consolidated certain markets down to share MSCs so that they can upgrade some of the other MSCs. This is causing increased latency and backend capacity issues all over the place.

What is it with you and saying Moo? Anyway, since you're using Imgur then it's super easy to use smaller pics. Just click the "Large Thumbnail" button to the right and it'll do the hard part for you.

The image size matters.  Overly large images in a forum are obnoxious and cause lots of scrolling.  I have a 19" laptop screen and one of your screen shots doesn't fit top to bottom.  Too big!

Ok interesting. I will work out a way to fix. On mine it scales. didn't know it didn't on all.

I know how frustrating it is. The LTE latencies in my home area have consistently been 110ms or higher @ RSRP -80dBm, even at 2AM.  If I travel to Asheville or Charlotte, NC, I see latencies of 75ms or less.  I used to think it was the Greenville, SC MSC, but Asheville uses the Greenville MSC too.

These images should be cut in half sizewise now.  On this machine I cannot see the difference due to it still scaling with this low resolution display (1024x768 on old Thinkpad X61 tablet).  Please let me know if it made any difference.  I used HTML code to shrink them in half both ways.

I love to disagree with JoeJoeJoe. Its one of my favorite pastimes. However, he's right in this instance. But it all really depends on what you're doing.

 

Throughput matters more when you're downloading/transferring large files. Then latency (so long as it isn't insanely bad) is not as important. Who cares if a file that will take 10 minutes to download starts an extra second later? However, if it can be done in 5 minutes instead of 10, then that's a good thing.

 

However, for most things done on a smartphone, it is small amounts of data sent and called for frequently. And for these things, lower latency is better. And higher latencies can really make it feel sluggish. Even if your throughput is 30Mbps.

 

Ideally, latency under 80ms and throughput above 3Mbps and your smartphone feels fantastic for most things. And if you're used to a latency of 75ms and it doubles to 150ms...you're likely going to notice. Because everything you do online will take double the time for the internet to start responding to what you're doing.

So I'm getting real bad speeds on a tower I connect to frequently here in Wichita, KS. It seems like the tower I connect to never gets faster than .1 down or up in Mbps. I heard that they're upgrading the tower's backhaul but this is pretty bad. Any ideas? PM me if you need specifics.

He clearly has an axe to grind.Of course, maybe Phil Goldstein is to blame. Fierce Wireless ran a full four major operator comparison article, which is linked earlier in this thread. But for some reason, Phil felt the need to write a separate article, pointing out that Sprint had the highest latencies of the four. Why that article was even necessary, I do not know.These guys just love to rip on Sprint. They really should be ashamed.AJ
