Sprint still selling WiMax phones?

I just went onto Sprint.com to pay my bill and saw an ad for a free SII. Obviously, the SII uses WiMax. I thought Sprint stopped selling WiMax phones?

They stopped introducing new WiMax devices but as far as I know still sell existing ones.

They are also still selling the Samsung Conquer 4G which uses WiMAX.

The Galaxy S2 isn't going to be End Of Life'd for a loooooooong time. They jut started selling the rest of their stock on their Boost and Virgin prepaid plans. You can see the rest of sprints old 4g wimax lines on their prepaid mvnos as well. But basically, the s2 is still supported and sold by sprint and its subsidiaries. In fact... they're actively working on a JB build for it as we speak... too bad all the leaks are 256 bit aes encrypted.. =\

Sprint said last year at their Oct 7th Network Vision update conference that they plan to continue selling WiMax devices throughout 2012. So from that bit, I presume that come January 1st, 2013, all WiMax phones (SGSII and Conquer) will be yanked from Sprint stores and sent to Virgin Mobile and Boost Mobile for rebadging and add to their Wimax device list.

Strange you said that. The Evo 3D on Virgin Mobile is still branded Sprint.

Really???? I thought when Sprint announced that it was sending the Wimax devices to Virgin Mobile that I saw a screenshot with the Evo 3D rebranded as Virgin Mobile on some tech websites. Anyways regardless if they rebadge the devices to Virgin Mobile (which to me is a waste of time) or not, the point is that Sprint will continue to sell Wimax devices through the end of 2012 which is what the OP was wondering about.

Maybe they did, but i have a friend who has a Sprint branded one on Virgin. Maybe they sold off all the Sprint branded ones first, and then sold the rest with Virgin branding.

Some Virgin Mobile Evo 3Ds have the Sprint branding, while other are VM branded. From what I understand, all of the first devices released on VM had the Sprint branding, as Sprint wanted to sell off their stock. As that dwidled though, new builds came from the factory with the updated Virgin logos.

Did you guys know that the stopped calling it the Epic 4g Touch? It is now just the Galaxy s2

Maybe they finally recognize that the Galaxy brand has more recognition than the Epic brand.

To be fair wasn't Galaxy SII always part of the name? Didn't it come to market as the Samsung Galaxy SII Sprint Epic 4g Touch? The longest name for a smartphone ever?

Not really. You have to remember that these are units and boxes that were made well over 6 months ago before the launch of the GS3. The GS2 sold so well that by the time the GS3 came, Samsung had the power and it resulted in little to no differentiation between the models sold in NA and the world. The GS2E4gt was shortened from E4GT to simply GS2 in recognition of the fact that samsung is a manufacturer to behold.

There is a reason the Boost gs2s are not called "Boost Epic 4g Touch" but instead Boost Galaxy S2and the sprint was made simply as GS2. Reason is samsung is now the big dog..

They dropped the epic touch name months ago. I know the signage changed a few Plano grams ago. If some at sprint referred to your phone as an epic touch it was out of old habit..

Because they have two galaxy s2 versions.

They have one with the original guts like ours which is the i777 which is known as the att galaxy s2 . The other is the skyrocket which is the GS2 with LTE capabilities and a qaulcaum chipset rather than an exynos and is simply called

Samsung Galaxy S™ II Skyrocket™. They have to have something to identify it as a modified GS2 as they have two versions of the phone.

Also the skyrocket is identical to the t mobile version and they call their the T-Mobile Galaxy S2.
