Very excited to see LTE underground on BART! I think they upgraded the DAS between Colma and SFO. I didn't get LTE underground anywhere else and the SINR was way too high to be coming from an abovegro

However, the South Bay work appears ahead of schedule.

No. These sites aren't complete. They are just being worked on. Expect them to come and go, just like all the early LTE signals in other markets. They will likely be blocked when complete too. I don't read anything into Sprint's reported numbers. They don't provide anything to back them up. They just say it. I believe what I see.

I just noticed the 4g icon on my evo light up last night. Looks like Livermore CA got an active tower well before the first sites were supposed to launch for the market.

 

The DL speeds were what I would expect for wimax but wow lots better than 3g. I took the screenshot on my way to work after I lost the 4g signal.

WiMAX is TDD vs. Sprint's FD-LTE

 

WiMAX shares the same spectrum for upload and download. You can change the ratio of "upload to download" so you can get more upload speeds but you take away from download when you do that. AJ can probably explain in much more detail (or google) but that is the gist.

Back when WiMAX first came out though, you could hit 15/5 or better in Atlanta. So I'm still of the opinion that the 1.5 Mbps upload cap is kinda bunk.

 

I seem to recall they had to increase the switch period, in between upload and download. I cannot remember the reason why, and I couldn't find anything when Googling it just now.

I can't speak for clearwire service but sprint's wimax phones where capped at 1meg upload, it was sometime last year when they raised it to 1.5meg, not sure about mifi's though.

After I had Clear I bought the Sprint U300 in July 2009, early on I was able to hit much higher uploads than Clear.

I'm about a 3 miles from Downtown Livermore. Downtown doesn't have LTE yet at least not that I can tell.

 

Have you had the 4G logo since?

I don't understand what this has to do with the post. But I did have an original Evo 4g. Traded it in for the new one.

What's the nearest major cross street? Maybe you can download the Sensorly app and drive over to the area and connect to LTE. It will then log the signal on its maps.

Downtown Livermore would be First Street and Railroad. Near to me would be Mines Ave and Shirley Ave.

 

Apparently there were some workers out here last week "working" on the tower near me. My signal went from very strong, full bars, to nothing at all like the little 1 bar.

BAH! So I get home last night and there is no LTE. Guess Sprint decided to turn it off.

That happens a lot in unlaunched markets. The OEM gets LTE online and tests it. Sprint shows up, signs off the site as complete and starts blocking LTE connections.

      Definite usage quirks in hunting down these sites with a rainbow sim in a s24 ultra. Fell into a hole yesterday so sent off to T-Mobile purgatory. Try my various techniques. No Dish. Get within binocular range of former Sprint colocation and can see Dish equipment. Try to manually set network and everybody but no Dish is listed.  Airplane mode, restart, turn on and off sim, still no Dish. Pull upto 200ft from site straight on with antenna.  Still no Dish. Get to manual network hunting again on phone, power off phone for two minutes. Finally see Dish in manual network selection and choose it. Great signal as expected. I still think the 15 minute rule might work but lack patience. (With Sprint years ago, while roaming on AT&T, the phone would check for Sprint about every fifteen minutes. So at highway speed you could get to about the third Sprint site before roaming would end). Using both cellmapper and signalcheck.net maps to hunt down these sites. Cellmapper response is almost immediate these days (was taking weeks many months ago).  Their idea of where a site can be is often many miles apart. Of course not the same dataset. Also different ideas as how to label a site, but sector details can match with enough data (mimo makes this hard with its many sectors). Dish was using county spacing in a flat suburban area, but is now denser in a hilly richer suburban area.  Likely density of customers makes no difference as a poorer urban area with likely more Dish customers still has country spacing of sites.

      Mike if you need more Dish data, I have been hunting down sites in western Columbus.  So far just n70 and n71 reporting although I CA all three.

      Good catch! I meant 115932/119932. Edited my original post I've noticed the same thing lately and have just assumed that they're skipping it now because they're finally able to deploy mmWave small cells.
