Network Vision/LTE - Richmond & Southern Virginia Markets

Your assumptions due to WiMax are not going to pan out for you. The Richmond market will not begin Network Vision/LTE deployments until sometime in 2013.

Any Updates on NV/LTE coming to Richmond? Going up there this weekend, does anyone know how the 3G speeds are up there?

If you're wandering the downtown/financial/government district areas speeds might be slow. I generally don't see much above 100 -200 kbps down. That is during the workday though. On weekends it might be faster. If you're anywhere outside of downtown speeds should be better. I usually get in the 500 - 800 kbps range. Still not blazing fast but usable.

Thanks, how does Wimax do, if you can even get it downtown? Might switch phones.

Wimax actually works very well downtown. Should see anywhere from 1 to 3 mbps on average. Usually use it over 3g since 3g performance can become unusable during a workday.

ok, cool Thanks! Where I live Wimax can't be used downtown at all. It won't pick up for some odd reason. Raleigh doesn't have many skyscrapers, or anything to block the signal.

Over the past year I have seen alot of 3G speed increases and better signals in Richmond. From 600kbps to 1500-2000kbps in many places. I wonder how much longer before LTE is launched here. I was jealous when I drove to Newport News this weekend and saw 4G on my Note II starting in Williamsburg.

Work in Richmond so far has been to the legacy network. Network Vision will begin in a few months in this market.

That's good to hear since no one had mentioned anything about Richmond. I thought we were the forgotten city. Lol, thanks for the update though, I will be happy when I start seeing work on the towers :)

Do you know to what extent the legacy network is being worked on? There's been a lot of issues in this areas such as block calls, dropped calls, late texts, echoing, network speeds to a crawl, etc,.. which finally have been getting resolved after so many months , and it's even great to see EHRPD on so many towers in the area.

I know EHRPD deployment doesn't have any direct correlation on LTE rollout, but the fact that our towers are finally getting worked on at all is a big relief! What's strange to me is that a close friend got a few hour blip of 4G in the Midlothian area, but we haven't seen even an "in progress" or hint of NV stuff rolling out here on the maps page.

So again I ask, Do you know to what extent our equipment has been/ is being worked on? I didn't expect to see hear about LTE in the area for a while, even though I know there's always a chance for later rounds starting early.

The legacy network is still getting maintenance upgrades in the Richmond market. These are shown at network.sprint.com. These include voice capacity (additional 1x voice carrier channels), data capacity (additional 3G EVDO carrier channels), data speed (additional T1 backhaul lines) upgrades. These will still be implemented on legacy sites until NV is complete. And they will even continue on NV sites when needed.

I am not aware of any activity in the Richmond area yet where they would be testing LTE signals. I believe AlcaLu is just starting to mobilize. Most likely, the first accepted sites in Richmond will be 3G. And currently no sites have been accepted in the Richmond market. But in a strange RF occurrence, he could be getting a signal from one of the closest Norfolk site.

Robert,

Any chance the Richmond area is going to get posted on the Network Vision/LTE Deployment Running List thread? At least I could gauge progress then.

Thanks for the help.

Once work begins in the Richmond market, the Running List will be updated every week or two with progress statistics for this market. If you become a S4GRU Sponsor, you can also have access to maps that show the site locations that have passed inspection. These get updated several times per week. Sponsors get lots of additional content.

For what it's worth, the Sprint store on Broad St had a sign on their door a few weeks ago that said LTE would be available in the Richmond area this Summer. It said something along the lines of "Make sure you are LTE ready, full LTE coverage in Metro Richmond is coming by the end of the Summer!" Don't know if it's accurate or just a sales gimmick, but the sign was up for at least a week, I went by there one day last week and it was gone. I did stop in and ask a sales clerk about it, he told me that they don't have an exact date, but he could pretty much guarantee it coverage would be available by the end of September. Possibly just a sales gimmick, or they may have some info we don't yet have.

I got the same word from someone who use to work with Sprint that we should have LTE by end of summer. Has anyone seen anything, I've noticed the backhauls because of faster speeds. I haven't seen any tower work yet though. The only time I saw something was in my last post but he was at the top running cables. I can't confirm anything else because I was in a rush to work. I haven't hit any active 4G towers either.

Good news for those of you in the Richmond market.  First two LTE sites accepted in the Richmond market today.  They are in a rural area north of the I-295 Bypass, north of the Richmond Metro Area.  They will appear in the next map refresh in the NV Sites Complete Map in the Sponsor section in a few hours.

    • My s24 Ultras auto updated to April 1 security patch over night. Not on wi-fi.  Play system remains at March 1. No notice that update occurred on screen.
    • Got the latest update. On my S24 ultra the NR-ARFCN display remains constant (which is inaccurate according to diags) while n41 and 38 toggle back and forth.  I updated then rebooted before testing. Two sims active. My security patch level updated automatically to April 1 before this update. Diags sent while n38 was displaying.
    • Was able to install the March 1 Android security patch. Seems slightly more accurate with 5g ca band id, but can not swear by it. Updated google play system update through the software information screen to March 1. *#73# still works. Froze updates waiting on SCP update beta to fix n41 showing as n38.
    • Just installed it. Thanks for the info.  71 mb mar 1st date.
    • There's a permit for a new 47 story building at 205 Montague St in Downtown Brooklyn. The problem is that  T-Mobile eNB 48352 is on the building next door and this new building will block two out of 3 sectors of the site. For reference, the new building will be roughly as tall as 16 Court St which is right across the street. This site is the primary site covering Cadman Plaza so I wonder what the plan is. Will they just try to change sector placement, move to a different building, or will this just speed up the conversion of the Sprint site at 25 Monroe Place?
