Hello 4G from the "D" (Detroit)

I'm an IT guy for the last 30 years and a sprint customer for the last 12 years. I'm a 4G early adopter in Detroit. I got the original HTC EVO 4G in June 2010 during the launch weekend. I've never able to benefit from 4G because it was never deployed in the Detroit area. I got my HTC EVO 4G LTE in June 2012 during the launch weekend. (do you see a pattern here?). I'm really looking forward to using 4G this time and I'm anxiously awaiting for our deployments to begin.

I plan to use this site to track deployment status with a specific focus on those cities who used the same subcontractors that Detroit will be using. I'm looking forward to interacting with other members especially those with the HTC EVO 4G LTE.

Lastly, and most importantly, I would like to thank S4GRU for providing information, insight and a community for "us" the real people that use Sprint 4G services.

Hi. I'm also here for the same reasons as you. Just a heads up, this site is relatively new, with staff and membership sparsely populated. Questions here will be answered in as short a time as possible. As the site grows hopefully the buzz here will be loud. I am not a part of the S4GRU staff so take my opinion with a grain of salt. Welcome to the forum and lets keep in touch.

Welcome!

I hope we don't get screwed again!

Edit: If you saw this before the edit, sorry. It feels like Sprint couldn't really care less about my area and it pisses me off sometimes. Sorry for the rant. When you live in Tulsa and have Sprint it happens.

Ditto from me too. I have never understood the fact that sprint does not seem to care about the Detroit area, when Wimax was only in grand rapids it sort of made a lot of people mad, Then when the G4 LTE came out we put us in the second roll out.

the funny thing is the other 3 phone companies PUT Detroit in the first phases of roll outs. Then I found out that Metro PCS in Detroit is now 4G it sort of makes me wonder where we stand in all of this.

People, people, we go over this ad nauseam. Do we really need to do it again?

Sprint deeded Clearwire control of the 4G WiMAX buildout. That Clearwire did not deploy officially launched WiMAX in Detroit, Phoenix, Tulsa, etc., is the failure of Clearwire, not Sprint. If you think that Sprint did/does not care about those metros, you are woefully mistaken, letting your spite get the best of you. Sprint simply had its hands tied in many markets after Clearwire hit financial troubles.

Yes, you can blame Sprint for handing that much control over to Clearwire. But it appeared at the time (circa 2008) to be a wise decision to let Sprint handle its multiplicity of 2G/3G CDMA1X/EV-DO/iDEN operations and Clearwire take the reins of the 4G WiMAX roll out. Sniping at that decision from the benefit of 2012 hindsight is basically nothing more than playing Monday morning quarterback.

Short of much greater amounts of funding -- the levels of which only anti consumer duopolists VZW and AT&T can muster -- nothing could have saved the 4G WiMAX initiative once it started to founder. And, unfortunately, some markets became collateral damage as WiMAX deployment ground to a halt.

Sorry. Bad things happen. Get used to it.

Sometimes when the network has become especially bad (4-5 dropped calls in a row) I get angry. I still get angry over data speeds but the dropped calls are the worst. Sometimes after that happens I just want to vent. This is not the place for that so sorry.

Well AJ take on the situation is true. The people in Detroit and Porto Rico were still feeling slighted after clear wire announced they Wouldn't deploy wimax unless they could get federal stimulus funding for these 2 markets. They claimed they couldn't make money in these markets because they were low income areas. clearwires claim insulted a lot of the 4.2 million people in the metro Detroit area.I was definitely pissed when I read there press release which said this. I feel good about Sprints NV plans for Detroit, and still think Sprint dropped the ball when they didn't take a more active roll in clear wire. That is all in the past, and now we can all look forward to the future, and NV. Its best we just try and forget the wimax Slap in the face and move on in Detroit.

Welcome from a fellow Detroiter!! Go Wings!!

I heard that Canada also played a part in the lack of WiMAX deployment in our area. The reason being was health / radiation concerns from the microwaves crossing the river. Since the signal could not be blocked from going into Canada the deployment didn't happen. Reminds me of a song from the south park movie. Lol.

I did have a WiMAX signal at Comerica park one day. I was surprised. It only worked while at the park.

We could use a few Fist of Goodness guys roaming The D. Maybe they could stop all the thieves from stealing Sprint antenna and tower parts.

Just found this post. I'm in Fraser just under Sterling Heights and the NV running list says October to have first LTE sites up. Anyone know of them working on any locations yet?
