Technobuffalo had 3 articles testing different phones on T-Mobiles LTE network. Here is a summary of the speed differences: iPhone - Download: 32.32Mbps Upload: 13.57Mbps Note II - Download: 57.99Mbps Upload: 20.16Mbps HTC ONE - Download: 27Mbps Upload: 11.52MBps Why is a big difference between the HTC ONE and the Note II.? I don't know how many test were run, and if these are averages, but it doesn't look good for HTC to be the slowest.

At the Samsung Galaxy S4 unveiling, JK Shin said that TD-LTE would be supported on the S4, which to me seemed to indicate that it would include the 2.5Ghz spectrum (band class 41?). If so, this would be the first sprint phone that would be able to handle TD-LTE. Does anyone have any more information about this? It sounded like Robert was told previously not to expect handsets with support for TD-LTE until the second half, but if it is indeed the case that this will include TD-LTE support, it would make the S4 the device to get over the HTC One for future proofing purposes. Just curious if anyone has any more info.

I have a burning question that I cannot find an answer to on the Internet (if that's possible). When sprint gets LTE advanced, will the iPhone 5 and the GS3 support the new features (Carrier aggregation, etc)? And what other phones can use LTE-A?

So seeing as how Sprint is aiming to have Network Vision mostly completed by the end of this year as well as the apparent inclusion of LTE upgrades to Network.sprint.com, do you think they are focusing on doing strictly NV upgrades or are there still band-aid fixes taking place?

Hi all, I've been using a 3G BlackBerry for the past few months, and it's pretty boring. Sure BlackBerries are great phones (I love the keyboard and email/messaging capabilities the most), but the main reason I stick with it is the reception/antenna on the Galaxy Nexus made the phone nearly unusable, coupled with poor battery life. With the BlackBerry, although I get excellent reception, I do not feel as though I am getting my money's worth out of Sprint's plans. My apartment is in a marginal Sprint coverage zone, so I need a phone with a strong antenna to be usable. BlackBerries are famous for this; the Nexus failed. Airave is a non-starter because it has to be by a window (ugly) and my neighbor has an Airave already; I believe this is the reason I had problems before with my Airave. My phone would try to handshake between two Airaves and drop the call. I am unsure if there is a way to tell your phone to only connect to one Airave or not; I returned the device. I'm seriously considering buying a Note II soon; so my question is: to those that have used this phone for a while, what is the reception like in comparison to other phones you've used? My apartment gets 1-2 bars of 3G (sometimes dropping down to 1X) with my BlackBerry; with the Galaxy Nexus unless I was directly in front of a window the call would drop and calls would go directly to Voicemail. I saw this from an article about Verizon FiOS at CES 2013 and wondered how they could ever broadcast live video over LTE when spectrum is hard to come by. I have FiOS service at home and have to say nothing beats fiber for home internet and tv. I just wish more companies would invest in infrastructure to provide for a more widespread fiber backbone. Verizon everywhere In his CES keynote, Verizon’s chairman and CEO Lowell McAdam indicated that FiOS TV won’t be limited to fixed line access in years to come. He said that Verizon may broadcast (multicast) live video over LTE in 2014. Lots of folks are excited about an LTE Advanced network. Why not? It's the new hotness in cellular data technologies. I'm trying to get a better understanding of how in the real world it will impact us Sprint phone users. So the three key advantages of LTE Advanced (LTE Release 10) to my knowledge are as follows: Carrier Aggregation Improved Multiple antenna support better handling of additional nodes Not sure how much benefit from improved multiple antenna support we'll get on phones due to power requirements... maybe tablets and personal hotspots though? Carrier aggregation seems like the major real benefit for Sprint users. I know Sprint is doing a 5x5 deployment but will they use this aggregation support to combine their 800Mhz spectrum as well as their 2.5G from Clearwire? I'd think Clearwire wouldn't be able to do it regardless given that it's TDD and not FDD, is this correct? Most of you seem to have a far greater wealth of knowledge of all things cellular data, so I was hoping you could clarify some of the benefits we'll see in the real world. Yes, I know there have been other topics about LTE-Advanced, but none seem to really address what I'm trying to find out. Thanks.

So I was browsing the forums and I did not see a thread that kept track of the LTE speeds people were getting. Id post an LTE speedtest if I got it in my area, but sadly I do not. So post away guys, and lets see just how fast sprint is becoming!

On my way home riding the bus in San Francisco, I look at my status bar and see something which left me completely confused.... LTE and extended (roaming) right next to each other. I did take a screenshot but I don't know to upload a picture via mobile so when I do get home I'll post the picture.

So Ericsson wants to stop looking slow and expensive...by slowing Samsung down and making them more expensive. I really hope that they can come to a reasonable resolution on this issue, since otherwise both Ericsson and Samsung NV builds could be slowed. And Ericsson in particular shouldn't get any slower than it already is.

First planned post of www.rcrproductions.org: Why LTE devices struggle with decent battery life: Phones today are becoming more and more vital to our daily life. Sending emails, surfing the web, or staying connected to loved ones, we just could not live without them. As carriers advance with their network technology, phones must keep up, right? Companies such as Verizon, Sprint, as well as AT&T are currently busy deploying their new 4G LTE networks. As these new networks are developed, phones have been made with LTE radios designed to operate on these networks, but many notice when connected to LTE, the battery life of the device is not as pretty as the speed of the network is. So many wonder, why does LTE drain so much battery? The main reason why LTE eats your battery: It all has to do with the function of the LTE radios. For now, most mobile service providers have not fully developed a technology called vOLTE (Voice Over Long Term Evolution). This technology allows voice related data to be transfered over the LTE network, instead of the fallback network(Usually with CDMA networks, or another sub network). Because this technology has not been fully developed, and deployed at the current time, phones are forced into a mode called "Active Dual Mode Operation". This mode forces the device to connect to a CDMA network, while connected to a LTE network.(CDMA networks used in this example belong to sprint, and verizon.) Since voice data can not be transfered over the LTE network, it is forced to be transfered only over the CDMA network, while only data is transmitted through the LTE network. Because two constant connections are being made at one time by the radios, this draws much more power from the device. If vOLTE technology were developed, battery life in some devices may increase when connected to the LTE network, since the radios would only have to be connected to one network to transmit both voice and data. The best way to avoid excessive battery drain in LTE devices: This is much simpiler than it may seem, but the fact is that most devices will prioritize a better network over a worse network. LTE networks are much faster than 3G networks, so the first signal a LTE device will search for is LTE. If an LTE signal is not present, the device will constantly continue to search for the network until it can successfully connect. This of course deteriorates battery life. The best recommendation is to not have LTE turned on in the settings of the device, if an LTE network has not yet been deployed in the area. Conclusion: As explained, LTE devices are the new face to a better and brighter networking experience. Some wondered why LTE devices draw more power when connected to an LTE network. The easiest answer to this: With some benifits, comes not as expected perfect results.

I came across an interesting article at http://www.gottabemo...phone-5-models/. It talks about the CDMA version of the IPhone 5. But it turns out that the IPhone 5 may start a big change in the future of LTE roaming. With the GSM version of the IPhone, which can operate on AT&T`s LTE network, and if the proper roaming agreements are signed, it can roam on Canada`s 4G LTE networks, but not possible yet as an agreement has not been reached. This being said, it turns out that the CDMA IPhone 5 is more compatible with LTE networks around the country. As of now, LTE roaming on verizon if you have a sprint phone is not possible, since Verizon runs their LTE on the 700Mhz spectrum, and Sprint is currently running their LTE on the 1900Mhz spectrum. But with the IPhone 5 already supporting other countries` LTE networks, I think in my opinion that Sprint may consider this in the future, but the cost that it would be to roam on other carrier`s LTE would cost sprint a bundle of money that may make them decide otherwise. I decided to make this it's own thread, as I've gone and made it overly complicated. Since we're letting our geek flags fly... Here is my Tasker setup that I created to aid me in tracking down LTE signal. I created this because if you're trying to be a "Sensorly Cartographer" like myself, it's annoying to have to keep your phone in front of your face all of the time, switching in and out of airplane mode, checking to see if the 3G now reads 4G. The most annoying thing for me is that if you lose your LTE signal, you'll have to 1) notice that it's gone, and 2) start cycling airplane mode again. This setup automates that, so if you're searching with Sensorly you just have to hit a button, and if there's LTE around you'll connect to it a lot faster. It's got a few moving parts to it, but so far it's worked out for me. WARNING: be aware that this WILL increase your battery consumption if (for some reason) you leave it running when not activily mapping. I highly recommend anyone who loves their Android phone to buy Tasker. I've had it for years, and am able to automate so many parts of my phone with it. I know I'm just scratching the surface with what I use it for too. To fully utilize this you'll be creating 3 tasks, 2 profiles and a widget icon on your home screen. Task 1: "Modified Airplane Mode Toggle" (Download here: Task-ModifiedAirplaneModeToggle.xml) Modified Airplane Mode Toggle A1: Flash [ Text:Airplane Toggle Long:Off ] A2: Airplane Radios [ Bluetooth:Off Cell:On NFC:Off Wifi:Off Wimax:On ] A3: Airplane Mode [ Set:On ] A4: Wait [ MS:0 Seconds:20 Minutes:0 Hours:0 Days:0 ] A5: Airplane Mode [ Set:Off ] What it does: it turns a modified airplane mode on (modified because I kept getting annoyed at the regular airplane mode cutting off my bluetooth headphones), waits 20 seconds, and toggles the airplane mode back off. 20 seconds is long enough for radio to do an LTE scan when it comes back online. On line A1, when things are set to "On" that means that they will be disabled by a Tasker Airplane Mode action, and "Off" means they won't be disabled by Tasker's Airplane Mode. I also set Wimax to "On" because, well, why not? Task 2: "4G Scan Monitor" (Download here:Task-4GScanMonitor.xml) 4G Scan Monitor A1: If [ %4GSCAN Is Set ] A2: If [ %HAVE4G ! It then runs the "Modified Airplane Mode Toggle", waits 45 seconds, and goes back to the first line. When you leave/lose 4G, it will check to see if you're currently in "scanning mode". If you are, it will start the scan over again. To add the widget: Long press on your launcher home screen: select Widget. Scroll down to "Tasker" and select "Task". From the list that pops up select "Airplane Toggle Widget". How to use: Start Sensorly Get a GPS lock Click the Start button on the Map Trip screen Hit your Home button to return to your launcher Tap the "Airplane Toggle Widget" you added earlier ... Profit! This will keep Sensorly running in the background. If/when your phone latches on to 4G, Sensorly will immediately start recording your 4G points. In certain browsers they will ask you if you want to open the file with Tasker. If your browser just offers to save the file, use a file explorer to move it to /sdcard/Tasker/tasks (for Tasks) or /sdcard/Tasker/profiles (for Profiles). Then go into Tasker and do a long-tap on the Profiles tab header. To import Tasks do the same on the Tasks tab header. EDIT: This site was determined to be an AT&T site further down in the thread. There is a new tower being installed near my place. Unfortunately, there are NO carrier markings on any of the equipment. The shack is still being built down in the parking lot. Can anyone tell anything from the attached photos. You can see two separate towers for the install. Mind you this is around a softball field oddly enough and this field never had lights before these towers were installed. This is the tower on the right. Only two wires to each of these panels (basically one side connected) but that being said this tower does not appear to be complete as the lower "rung" is not populated with RUUs. This is the left tower, it appear that there are two RUU's per panel. Note that one antena does not appear to be hooked up yet. That the other antenna has all four wires connected. I apologize for the suboptimal quality of the pics, these were taken with my phone. Plus I had to shrink them to fit them in this post. I have more pics of each tower if needed as well as the fullsize images that I can rehost elsewhere.

It seems that LTE is very susecptible to minor terrain changes. While I was mapping a new LTE area, I noticed that when the road had a minor dip, LTE would drop. Now that I've been using sensorly, I watch the map and see gaps in LTE coverage. Sure enough, when that happens, the road has a dip in it.

I decided to change my data connection to LTE only for my trip from Texas to Kansas. That way I should not have to toggle to get LTE to connect since there would not be a CDMA connection alrady established connection to change when LTE was available. Well guess what? LTE still would not connect even though the iPhone had and LTE connection. 1. I connected once in Wichita Falls but soon lost it and never connected again there even though the iPhone maintained an LTE connection while in Wichita Falls. 2. iPhone connected at the south Kansas border, Evo finally connected after toggling. 3. Evo never connected in Wichita KS, iPhone always connected 4. Automatically connected from Andover, KS to El Dorado, KS 5. Finally automatically connected in Overland Park. I cleared the LTE file so I could log all connections on the trip. No connections were logged until I set the connection to LTE/CDMA/EVDO auto when I got home. Note: When connected LTE, there were not NID or BID info in netmontior when LTE only selected.

CricKet now has a reasonable amount of LTE, up significantly from the two cities that they had before (Las Vegas and Tucson): http://www.phonescoop.com/articles/article.php?a=11513 They have a version of the LG Connect 4G (they call it the Optimus Regard) and will have the GSIII soon. Data cards aren't yet available in the new markets, but tethering on a phone is available. As usual, all plans include unlimited everything-except-data; data speeds are throttled past 2GB, 5GB or 10GB, depending on whether you get the $50, $60 or $70 plans, and tethering is allowed on $60 and $70 options. Now if only CricKet had an inside source that provided information similar to what S4GRU has for Sprint...then I could figure out just how overblown CricKet's coverage maps are (I'm right on the edge of LTE coverage here, according to their map)...

Since all the issues the EVO has been having, is it still a recommended phone?
