Intel Gets Chip Order From Apple, Its First Major Mobile Win

 

Apple Inc.’s next iPhone will use modems from Intel Corp., replacing Qualcomm Inc. chips in some versions of the new handset, a move by the world’s most-valuable public company to diversify its supplier base.

 

Apple has chosen Intel modem chips for the iPhone used on AT&T Inc.’s U.S. network and some other versions of the smartphone for overseas markets, said people familiar with the matter. IPhones on Verizon Communications Inc.’s network will stick with parts from Qualcomm, which is the only provider of the main communications component of current versions of Apple’s flagship product. Crucially for Qualcomm, iPhones sold in China will work on Qualcomm chips, said the people, who asked not to be identified because Apple hasn’t made its plans public.

 

I'm guessing Sprint's version of the iPhone will have the Qualcomm modem?

More than likely yes. The AT&t/T-Mobile one will use the Intel chip and the Sprint/Verizon one will use the Qualcomm chip.

The Reddit threads on the T-Mobile sub seem to be guessing Qualcomm, not Intel. I could see AT&T asking for Intel, because that's the AT&T/Death Star thing to do. Also T-Mobile wants things like LAA, EVS, better WiFi Calling algorithms, and other network features like that. I see the VZW/Sprint/T-Mobile model being a thing powered by Qualcomm where AT&T is the US Intel model provider.

or apple could surpise us and, be the first to support 4XCA. :)

You mean the Apple that notoriously is a generation behind flagship Android phones for features? Be lucky if it has 2xCA lol

Also don't forgot the Android flagship known as the LG G5 doesn't support 3xca. So if this year's iPhone does then apple is ahead

Twas just a friendly poke at fun.  But I personally, and many others dont really consider LG the flagship carrier, and hell, HTC really isnt anymore (3x though), but the Samsung phones definitely are 3xCA.

It was reported the htc10 supports 3xca.

It's an interesting move. I prefer the Sprint/Verizon/T-Mobile version because it has TD-SCDMA that I need when I go to China and just better worldwide compatibility. i'm very interested to see what the band support will look like on the versions provided by Intel.

    • Unable to confirm if it's really off but I noticed this morning that I'm no longer connecting to Band 41 on my home site. Switching my phone to LTE-only pretty much always put me on Band 41 since it was the least used band on T-Mobile's network. Now I'm only able to connect to Band 2/66. Not complaining because it means speeds are faster on LTE and maybe 150MHz n41 is around the corner.

    • Definite usage quirks in hunting down these sites with a rainbow sim in a s24 ultra. Fell into a hole yesterday so sent off to T-Mobile purgatory. Try my various techniques. No Dish. Get within binocular range of former Sprint colocation and can see Dish equipment. Try to manually set network and everybody but no Dish is listed.  Airplane mode, restart, turn on and off sim, still no Dish. Pull upto 200ft from site straight on with antenna.  Still no Dish. Get to manual network hunting again on phone, power off phone for two minutes. Finally see Dish in manual network selection and choose it. Great signal as expected. I still think the 15 minute rule might work but lack patience. (With Sprint years ago, while roaming on AT&T, the phone would check for Sprint about every fifteen minutes. So at highway speed you could get to about the third Sprint site before roaming would end). Using both cellmapper and signalcheck.net maps to hunt down these sites. Cellmapper response is almost immediate these days (was taking weeks many months ago).  Their idea of where a site can be is often many miles apart. Of course not the same dataset. Also different ideas as how to label a site, but sector details can match with enough data (mimo makes this hard with its many sectors). Dish was using county spacing in a flat suburban area, but is now denser in a hilly richer suburban area.  Likely density of customers makes no difference as a poorer urban area with likely more Dish customers still has country spacing of sites.
    • Mike if you need more Dish data, I have been hunting down sites in western Columbus.  So far just n70 and n71 reporting although I CA all three.
