Having some MEGA problems

Okay, so my Samsung Galaxy Mega i9200 has been acting up lately and is getting to the point where it is unusable. The problem? It is so big that it overheats. A lot.I have tried putting it into Safe Mode and it still shuts off, so I am positive it is not an app or something stupid like that. About 3 out of every 4 times I put it in my pocket, when I take it out it has shut off and the screen is fairly hot. Obviously this doesn't make me happy because it takes about a full minute to turn back on.  :wall:  I have found that putting it in my pocket with the screen facing outwards keeps it from shutting down, but I hate doing that because it is (A) uncomfortable and ( B) not safe for my device. I do not really want to buy a new phone right now because the other 6"+ phones are fairly expensive. I have just bought a new case and am hoping that will fix my problem. Anyone have any suggestions if it doesn't?

PS: Note owners, I realize your phone is better but I do not care.

PPS: I know this is AT&T but Sprint doesn't have service in our area so blame them. There is a Sprint version of my phone, so let us pretend we are talking about that.

Virus in system apps? What is your CPU load? Cpu-z can show an overal cpu load but you might need something that shows what each program is using. I noticed that some Roms cause heat issues. Did you load a new ROM or kernel lately?

It could be a virus in the system apps, but I hope it isn't. I will look into CPU-Z and other apps, thanks for the suggestions! And no, it is completely unrooted with no real modifications. Any apps that messed with the system (alternate status bars, battery savers, TimePin, etc.) were removed when I saw issues. :(

Did you look at the battery usage? In settings there should be one for battery. If it is using cpu it should be using power. Mine normally shows screen as the biggest battery drain then it shows other apps I use.

I think he means factory reset.

A factory reset would wipe all partitions except /system. He'll likely have to Odin the stock firmware to wipe /system and rewrite it with clean software. That is...if it's a virus in system app.

Yeah I don't really want to reset it, I had to do that on my GS3 and just wanted a new phone. I Have decided to sell the darned monstrosity for something nicer. Now I am debating: Nexus 5 or Nokia Lumia 1020. I had problem after problem with my GS3 and now it is the same with my Galaxy Mega. Time I stopped my Samsung loyalty and moved on to better brands. Thanks guys, I really appreciate the suggestions. I will keep this post bookmarked for future reference as this will almost definitely happen to me again.

That was exactly why I stopped using Samsung devices after I had a GS1, GS2, and GS3. I got tired of all the weird issues that always seemed to stem from Samsung's f&%king around with Android so much.

While LG does some modifications as well, they are much less intrusive than Samsung's and seem to be much more stable in my experience so far with my G2.

Well, I keep my Mega in a folio and keep it in my pocket and I do not have a overheat heat issue. The only time I do notice it getting a tiny bit hotter than usual is when I am streaming to my Chromecast for long periods of time. But it is still not hot to the point that it shuts down.

Agreed. I had glitches galore on my GS3 and now even more with my Mega. I'm going with a red Nexus 5. I see my parents with their N5's and they have no issues. I have been so jealous for so long.

I Chromecast with my Nexus 7 95% of the time, and it never overheats. But yeah, the fact that yours doesn't have the same problems as mine further enforces my belief that my phone is to blame. The screen gets warm, and sometimes the back door is hot. Pretty sure that is unintended...  B)

  • 2 months later...

FYI Sprint/Samsung have pushed out the Kit-Kat update on this phone.... I have been using it for several months -- and while it is a bit slow and the screen isn't as high quality as the premium phones it is a great phone.  It also fits in my pockets just fine along with my iPhone 5s (the screen on that looks SOOO small to me now LOL)...  I am not sure if the upgrade to the kit-kat has made my occasional connection issues on 3G go away as of yet, but we will see.  It was just good to see this midrange phone get updated!

    • Has anyone checked Verizon n77 in areas with more than 100MHZ active? This spectrum has been fully available since August of last year.  Of course they are not typically using SA.
    • I updated my other s21 ultra factory unlocked to the latest firmware... It behaves like the S24 Ultra n38 or n41 depending on 80 or 100MHz or their nr- arfcn.
    • I see everything correct. The two ARFCN's you mentioned earlier and they idenitify as n-41.  using 4.832b SCP. Only using one TM SIM.
    • I posted this in the Nebraska Premier thread last week, but just wanted to share in this thread the progress that T-Mobile has made in filling in the great coverage gap known as Nebraska. Between late last year and this year, they have added 28 new expansion sites filling in the coverage hole, plus 11 Sprint site conversions in eastern Nebraska and far western Iowa. Notably, in the last month n41 coverage was added on over a dozen expansion sites in western Nebraska that were added to the network last year. For comparison, here is the very first map that I created in October of 2022 after we noted expansion sites outside of Sprint conversion in Lincoln and Omaha. It doesn't show any western parts of the state, but just know there was nothing besides roaming coverage and a little B12 coverage leaking down from South Dakota to the west of Valentine, NE.
    • Sent a copy of my DB in an e-mail just now.  Couldn't leave the house today but can hopefully get a screenshot when I'm out on another cell site tomorrow.
