My S3 stutters and drops calls, Any S4 changes?

I should begin by saying that I'm on Verizon. I live in a "marginal" reception area. I've had an Samsung Galaxy S3 since mid April. I have reception issues since day one. My phone is dead stock 4.1.2, rooted. I am posting here because the information on this site is the only one that has gone into depth explaining the actual process of cell connection. I can't say I understood much of it, but I get that there are enough folks here that do, so I might get an answer to my dilemma. Until July 9th I can exchnge my phone for another. As other folks have said, "I love my S3 except when I make calls".

My question is, is there enough change in the hardware of the S4,  that I can expect reception to be improved over that of the S3?

Thanks for helping a 4G pilgram out.

I have sprint and have both devices

The sgs3 has worse call quality but holds on to calls better, so less drops

The sgs4 has better call quality, but can't really hold on to calls as well resulting in a lot more dropped calls

I also notice my sgs4 will randomly lose data signal and take minutes to find one again while my sgs3 holds on and doesn't lose data. In the rare instance it does, it finds the data connection again within 10 seconds

The randomly lose data problem also existed on the Galaxy Nexus. Man, did that drive me bonkers. On the GNex, you couldn't even cycle airplane mode to get back data when it did that. Hard reboot is all that would cure it.

Does Verizon have a femtocell solution like Sprint's Airave?

They do but they charge, and most reps forget the product exists so they wont recommend it. I also forget what name it goes under...

It sucks that they make you purchase the device. Thankfully, when you do, there's no additional monthly charges. Why not speak to a retention specialist and see if they'll send you on for free, or use one on a 'loaner' basis like Sprint does?

From my experience at Verizon, retention was not able to do that. Might have changed though.

It couldn't hurt to explain your situation and see if they'll agree to provide a Network Extender. Couldn't hurt, right?
