The Boogah King small cell is now live and boy what a difference in coverage and speeds it is.  From barely 1-2 mbps on B25 / 26 at -110s range to 20-30s on B41 in the -80s to 100s range.

Found 3 more Sprint Airspan small cells (Florin/Freeport, downtown, & loaves and fishes area) and the first noted Clearwire 2.5 conversion to Sprint triband 800/1.9/2.5 in Elk Grove!

I rather not get into the politics of cell sites and health but a significant number of cell sites in the very flat central valley colocated on school grounds due to the presence of available structures like stadium lights or land available to build something inconspicuous like a flag pole.

A lot of sites are cleverly hidden out in the wild and most people won't notice them unless lookin for something to blame.

Sure it's not just the water? Or radon? Lol we live amongst cell towers. Can't wait for the push to have them all removed due to health concerns. Then everyone complains that they can no longer access Facebook [emoji2357][emoji2357] oh Californians [emoji2357]

NIMBY people piss me off.  But I will say that I really did feel strange when I took pics of the last mimo antenna in the PHX thread.  I dunno if I'm extra sensitive or because the tower is only 40-50 feet high. But I personally notice a different feeling.

I agree with you.

What’s a feasible alternative for this site?

Make it look like a native tree species rather than a flagpole site.

I've made a discovery about my home's network setup and would appreciate some advice.

Using my new Cradlepoint COR-IBR1700 for connection to the internet via a cellular connection, the local ethernet port on the IBR1700 can be set.  The factory default has it on AUTO, which  it reports running at 10Mbps.  That speed was horrible.  My house is wired for gigabit and all of my switches are gigabit. So I manually set the IBR1700 to 1000, which also necessitated full-duplex (since there is no such thing as 1000 half-duplex).  That speed was also horrible also.

So then I set the IBR1700's ethernet port to 100 half-duplex, and now I get 30 Mbps from  speedtest.net  and  fast.com    Changing to 100 full-duplex drops back down to 1 Mbps.  So clearly, my Sprint connection to the IBR1700 doesn't like full-duplex at any speed.

Note that I'm not changing the setting from the IBR1700 to Sprint (I don't seem to have access to that), I'm changing the connection from the IBR1700 wired ethernet connector to the rest of my home.

I think that most cell radios are half-duplex (I'm on Sprint's 4G LTE here in Patterson).  I'm just surprised that there isn't a big recommendation somewhere that says to run at half-duplex when connecting to cell.

Can anyone confirm or deny?  This was a big surprise to me; but I'm pleased with the 30x speedup between half-duplex and full-duplex.

Thanks,

Scott

Try adjusting your MTU metric in LAN settings from 1500 to 1438. This is a common occurrence with Sprint service on embedded LTE radios. Is your data provisioned through Sprint or third party?

My service is through Sprint (not a third party on the Sprint network).

Setting my Cradlepoint COR-IBR1700 as follows;  reported by speedtest.net:

  • MTU=1500, 100Mbps, half-duplex:  30 Mbps
  • MTU=1500, 100Mbps, full-duplex: 2 Mbps
  • MTU=1438, 100Mbps, half-duplex: 28 Mbps
  • MTU=1438, 100Mbps, full-duplex: 3 Mbps
  • MTU=792, 100Mbps, half-duplex: 27 Mbps
  • MTU=792 100Mbps, full-duplex: 2 Mbps

fast.com  produces consistent numbers.

TCPoptimizer liked 792 the best, so I tried that also.  The values from 30 to 27 Mbps are probably just traffic related, so I see those as the same.  It is the dramatic difference between half-duplex and full-duplex that is my concern.

Thanks,

Scott

I'm in Reno for a conference at the Silver Legacy Casino, and this is kind of weird.  I've not taken my T-Mobile or AT&T phones around yet, but I took my Verizon phone and, of course, my Sprint phone.  Verizon has a DAS spread across the three casinos (Eldorado, Silver Legacy, Circus Circus) with a different sector of GCI 009395xx for each casino.  Sprint is on the DAS as well, but only in Circus Circus (0AC1C312).  In the other two, my phone instead connects to a macro a few blocks away.

Yesh. They're mostly upgrades to legacy repeater systems. I don't think Reno had that many DAS / Repeater systems that last time I checked. A good number of macro all upgraded with 8T8R 2.5 (or even M-MIMO) though!

I just find it strange that the three buildings are connected--without going outside--and yet the Sprint DAS is only in one of them.  Meanwhile, Verizon is in all three.  I'll follow-up when I know about T-Mobile and AT&T.

I lived in Reno 16 years.  Love that town.  I recommend the mushroom ravioli at the Eldorado buffet and lunch at Cafe DeThai.  Have fun!

Thanks.  I'm home now.  Ate in the hotel/casinos on Wednesday evening and Thursday, then breakfast and lunch were provided by the conference on Friday and Saturday, dinner Saturday as well, and Friday we went to Carson City to "Red's Old 395 Grill" which others raved about but I wasn't as keen on.

At least I managed to get some TV and cell data!

Did you make it up to Tahoe?  Yeah, Red's is just average.  Nevada isn't really known for its BBQ.  However, if you are ever there on Labor Day weekend, there is the Best of the West Rib Cookoff in Downtown Sparks.  It is the biggest rib festival on the west coast, and it is highly recommended.  :imo:

No, didn't make it to Tahoe.  We had a (very tardy) van take us to Carson City for dinner, and other than that, I spent my entire time in the casino.

I don't know what it is about people and barbecue--a lot of people seem to rave about bad barbecue.  Maybe it's because I've lived in a part of the country with really good barbecue, but here in DC, a lot of people rave about this BBQ place in DC that, despite being there several times, I can't find anything particularly great about.  The person I know best who likes it is from Florida and then went to school in Georgia, too, so he really should know better.  I don't really know what to make of it.

Would this happen to be the Hill Country BBQ in DC?: https://www.hillcountry.com

Since I'm out in the country and 5G won't be coming to me any time soon, I'm trying to upgrade my existing 4G LTE system.

I bought one of the new Sprint MiFi 8000 units (made by InSeeGo / Novatel).  This unit is similar to the Verizon MiFi 8800L; but the Sprint version includes Sprint bands such as Band 41.

So far, so good.  Then I purchased a small flat panel antenna with TS9 connectors (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DN3J03O).  The MiFi 8000 and MiFi 8800L have TS9 coax connectors under the little rubber covers.

So now SpeedTest is showing 56 Mbps.  I have never ever gotten anywhere near this speed with any of my other configurations, so I'm very happy!

The largest plan from Sprint for the MiFi 8000 is the 100GB/month plan.  So I bought 4 of them.  Yes I know it is silly, but the cost for my existing 120GB grandfathered plan in July was $600 (due to the overage charges).  Ouch.  So 400GB/month here I come...

Now for the tricky bit.  I know that I need to do load balancing across the 4 plans.  So I could either go with a USB based system (such as the Peplink MAX-OTG-U4) or an ethernet based system (such as the Peplink Balance One).  I already tried a simple USB to ethernet dongle from C2G but that didn't work.  It seems that a WiFi router that supported WISP (such as TP-Link 3020 or 3040) would be a possible solution, but I don't really want that many antennas sitting on the table...

At this point I am stuck and would appreciate some advice.  How to tie my four MiFi 8000 units into my existing Cat6 gigabit wired ethernet house.

Thanks,

Scott

Why don't you just sign up for a plan with Calyx institute? It's $500/year I think and is unlimited on Sprint. No deprioritization. You can get a Sierra Wireless modem and put it in a USB enclosure, and then just stick the SIM in it. You don't need to do a device swap with Sprint.

Or get the AT&T iPad plan (use an IMEI generator to get an iPad 4 IMEI). $35/month, also unlimited, but subject to deprioritization. My parents do about 200GB/month over it and haven't seen any deprioritization (they're in a rural area on an uncongested tower).

There are ways to get unlimited plans without overages where you don't have to mess with load balancing and expensive plans.

Edit: Check out this thread for more information on hardware and such https://s4gru.com/forums/topic/7844-build-your-own-devices-routers-relays-iot-etc there are a few of us that can give you advice. For my build, I picked up two of these antennas from LTEfix https://ltefix.com/shop/antennas/4g-lte-antennas/directional-panel/700-2700mhz-15dbi-4g-lte-directional-antenna/ for use with my Sierra Wireless MC7455. They work great. While the MC7455 is the only Sierra Wireless modem that supports all 3 Sprint bands, I wouldn't recommend it for Sprint because it has a bug that causes it to disconnect 1-2 times a day, requiring the modem to be power cycled. Other Sierra Wireless models don't have this issue, and you can get one with 3xCA B41 if you don't need B25.

    • Was able to install the March 1 Android security patch. Seems slightly more accurate with 5g ca band id, but can not swear by it. Updated google play system update through the software information screen to March 1. *#73# still works. Froze updates waiting on SCP update beta to fix n41 showing as n38.
    • Just installed it. Thanks for the info.  71 mb mar 1st date.
    • There's a permit for a new 47 story building at 205 Montague St in Downtown Brooklyn. The problem is that  T-Mobile eNB 48352 is on the building next door and this new building will block two out of 3 sectors of the site. For reference, the new building will be roughly as tall as 16 Court St which is right across the street. This site is the primary site covering Cadman Plaza so I wonder what the plan is. Will they just try to change sector placement, move to a different building, or will this just speed up the conversion of the Sprint site at 25 Monroe Place?
    • At least not recently.  I think I might have seen this a year ago.  Not Sure.
    • Did they previously hop between n38 and n41 in prior version of SCP, or have you always seen n41 displayed properly?
